Tourism in Asia and the Pacific

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) represents the world's fastest growing tourist industry. PATA has been influential in making its member governments realize the economic importance of tourism which is now a priority industry in the Asia-Pacific region. PATA also plays a major role in development enabling member countries to develop unrivalled tourism products and services. Internatonal events taking place within the region help to highlight PATA countries as tourist destinations. Protectionism and travel barriers may inhibit future growth but provided these obstacles can be removed, by the year 2000 the Asia-Pacific region should occupy the supreme position in terms of visitor arrivals.     

Bibliometrical analysis of Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research

Scientific journals are academic publications that produce information in a specific discipline. In the current study, 522 studies published between 2009 and 2017 in Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research, were bibliometrically examined. According to findings, the author with the highest rate of contribution to the journal is Rob Law, the most often published institution is Hong Kong Polytech University, and the most researched topic is customer loyalty. Periodical analysis of academic journals enables inferences to be made about the intellectual structures of the disciplines and provides leading summary information on important studies, scientists, and research trends.     

The Sixth Asia Pacific Tourism Association Annual Conference

ABSTRACT

Developed over the last two decades, higher tourism education in China has made a great contribution to the growth of the tourism industry, but is now faced with a variety of challenges in its further development. The article discusses the current situations and problems of higher tourism education in China, analyzes the causes of the problems and then puts forward suggestions to solve them.     

Theoretical innovation in Asia Pacific tourism research

This paper identifies some pervasive limitations of tourism research and some particular difficulties confronting its development in the Asia Pacific region. It raises the issues of status and respect in fields of academic inquiry and adopts a position that those seeking to create a mature discipline of tourism studies built wholly on a positivist tradition may be misleading their Asian Pacific colleagues. It also suggests that conceptual schemes rather than theories are a promising level of integrative effort and that heuristics to stimulate conceptual creativity can be useful. In particular it argues that by combining cultural insights and elements from the communities of Asia with guidelines for creative model and scheme building, Asia Pacific tourism researchers could find new directions and heighten the originality and hence the global interest in their work.     

Recent Research in Asia Pacific: The Case of a Professionally Affliated Journal

This review paper aims to unveil the recent research trends in the journal Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research. A systematic review of 130 articles published in the journal from 2011 to the third issue of 2014 was conducted, followed by a content analysis of various aspects of the articles, including research foci, research contexts, research methods, number of authors, and contributions by institutions and countries. The findings indicate that marketing research predominates in the articles whilst tourism and attraction are the major research contexts. An increasing rigor in the research methods applied has been observed. Finally, implications for tourism researchers are discussed.

Environmental Reporting of Airlines in the Asia Pacific Region

This study investigates environmental reporting in the Asia Pacific airline sector. The findings indicate that only five airlines (all in four developed countries in the region) have published standalone environmental reports. The environmental reports of those five airlines were examined, using the assessment model developed by Adams (1998). Fifteen elements from Adams’ framework plus one additional element were employed to analyse the content of the reports. At least 69% of the 16 elements were mentioned in the reports. Comparisons of environmental policy statements and environmental management systems used by the airlines were also made.     

Perceptions of restaurant employees in Asia Pacific on sexual harassment in the hospitality industry

A major issue facing all of the hospitality industry is that of sexual harassment and the explosion of the number of sexual harassment lawsuits being filed. According to the National Restaurant Industry (U.S.) in 1998, in certain states there are more sexual harassment lawsuits than slip and fall cases filed within the restaurant industry. With the cost of litigation and the dollar amount of settlements both increasing substantially, it is with a pro‐active view to look at the perspective of sexual harassment by restaurant employees. The purpose of this study was to measure the perceptions and attitudes of service personnel, specifically restaurant employees in Hawaii on sexual harassment.
