Mixing of direct, ratio, and product method estimators   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In a paper by S rivenkataramana T racy [4], four methods of estimating a population total Y with the use of an auxiliary variable were introduced, given a random sample without replacement from that population. These methods were "built around the idea that estimating the population total is essentially equivalent to estimating the total corresponding to the non-sample units, since that corresponding to the sample units is known once the sample is drawn and measurements are made on it."
However, in the case of small sampling fractions the nonsample units constitute most of the population and no great improvement over the traditional estimators is to be expected. Therefore the methods are compared with the existing estimators and it turns out that they are special cases of the "mixing estimators", introduced in this paper. The latter estimators can be made asymptotically equivalent to the regression estimator and are therefore asymptotically superior to all other estimators. An exact comparison is carried out on the artificial example given in [4]. The statement in this paper that "the proposed estimators are to be preferred to the regression estimator for., superiority of performance in the case of small samples" is evidently misleading. Finally a comparison is made with other "mixing-type" estimators, that can prove very useful in practice.  相似文献

The problem of simultaneous asymptotic estimation of eigenvalues of covariance matrix of Wishart matrix is considered under a weighted quadratic loss function. James-Stein type of estimators are obtained which dominate the sample eigenvalues. The relative merits of the proposed estimators are compared to the sample eigenvalues using asymptotic quadratic distributional risk under loal alternatives. It is shown that the proposed estimators are asymptotically superior to the sample eigenvalues. Further, it is demonstrated that the James-Stein type estimator is dominated by its truncated part.  相似文献

A growing literature has been advocating consistent kernel estimation of integrated variance in the presence of financial market microstructure noise. We find that, for realistic sample sizes encountered in practice, the asymptotic results derived for the proposed estimators may provide unsatisfactory representations of their finite sample properties. In addition, the existing asymptotic results might not offer sufficient guidance for practical implementations. We show how to optimize the finite sample properties of kernel-based integrated variance estimators. Empirically, we find that their suboptimal implementation can, in some cases, lead to little or no finite sample gains when compared to the classical realized variance estimator. Significant statistical and economic gains can, however, be recovered by using our proposed finite sample methods.  相似文献

随着对经济和金融时间序列长记忆性的研究,分整阶数估计已成为当前理论研究的焦点问题。以对数周期图回归和局部Whittle方法为代表的半参数分整阶数估计方法在实践中得到广泛应用,但对这两类半参数估计方法的有限样本性质的比较则鲜有涉及,影响了在实践中对估计方法的选择。利用蒙特卡洛模拟方法,在不同数据产生的过程下,这两种半参数估计方法有限样本性质的研究结果表明:在ARFIMA(0, d, 0)过程下,LW类估计量具有较好的小样本性质;在平稳ARFIMA(1, d, 0)过程下,本文建议的QGPH估计量的有限样本性质要优于其他对数周期图估计量;在非平稳过程下,MGPH的偏差最小。  相似文献

Instrumental variable (IV) methods for regression are well established. More recently, methods have been developed for statistical inference when the instruments are weakly correlated with the endogenous regressor, so that estimators are biased and no longer asymptotically normally distributed. This paper extends such inference to the case where two separate samples are used to implement instrumental variables estimation. We also relax the restrictive assumptions of homoskedastic error structure and equal moments of exogenous covariates across two samples commonly employed in the two‐sample IV literature for strong IV inference. Monte Carlo experiments show good size properties of the proposed tests regardless of the strength of the instruments. We apply the proposed methods to two seminal empirical studies that adopt the two‐sample IV framework.  相似文献

Estimators of parameters in semi-parametric left truncated and right censored regression models are proposed. In contrast to the majority of existing estimators, the proposed estimators do not require the error term of the regression model to have a symmetric distribution. In addition the estimators use asymmetric “trimming” of observations. Consistency and asymptotic normality of the estimators are shown. Finite sample properties are considered in a small simulation study. For the left truncated case, an empirical application illustrates the usefulness of the estimator.  相似文献

In the simple errors-in-variables model the least squares estimator of the slope coefficient is known to be biased towards zero for finite sample size as well as asymptotically. In this paper we suggest a new corrected least squares estimator, where the bias correction is based on approximating the finite sample bias by a lower bound. This estimator is computationally very simple. It is compared with previously proposed corrected least squares estimators, where the correction aims at removing the asymptotic bias or the exact finite sample bias. For each type of corrected least squares estimators we consider the theoretical form, which depends on an unknown parameter, as well as various feasible forms. An analytical comparison of the theoretical estimators is complemented by a Monte Carlo study evaluating the performance of the feasible estimators. The new estimator proposed in this paper proves to be superior with respect to the mean squared error.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose two moment-type estimation methods for the parameters of the generalized bivariate Birnbaum–Saunders distribution by taking advantage of some properties of the distribution. The proposed moment-type estimators are easy to compute and always exist uniquely. We derive the asymptotic distributions of these estimators and carry out a simulation study to evaluate the performance of all these estimators. The probability coverages of confidence intervals are also discussed. Finally, two examples are used to illustrate the proposed methods.  相似文献

It is well known that the usual procedures for estimating panel data models are inconsistent in the dynamic setting. A large number of consistent estimators however, have been proposed in the literature. This paper provides a survey of the majority of mainstream estimators, which tend to consist of IV and GMM ones. It also considers a newly proposed extension to the promising Wansbeek–Bekker estimator (Harris & Mátyás, 2000). To provide guidance to the applied researcher working on micro-datasets, the small sample performance of these estimators is evaluated using a set of Monte Carlo experiments.  相似文献

Generalized least squares estimators, with estimated variance-covariance matrices, and maximum likelihood estimators have been proposed in the literature to deal with the problem of estimating autoregressive models with autocorrelated disturbances. In this paper we compare the small sample efficiencies of these estimators with those of some approximate Bayes estimators. The comparison is done with the help of a sampling experiment applied to a model specification. Though these Bayes estimators utilize very weak prior information, they out-perform the sampling theory estimators in every case we consider.  相似文献

The GMM method and the classical 2SLS method are considered for the estimation of mixed regressive, spatial autoregressive models. These methods have computational advantage over the conventional maximum likelihood method. The proposed GMM estimators are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal. Within certain classes of GMM estimators, best ones are derived. The proposed GMM estimators improve upon the 2SLS estimators and are applicable even if all regressors are irrelevant. A best GMM estimator may have the same limiting distribution as the ML estimator (with normal disturbances).  相似文献

Often economic data are discretized or rounded to some extent. This paper proposes a regression and a density estimator that work especially well when discretization causes conventional kernel-based estimators to behave poorly. The estimator proposed here is a weighted average of neighboring frequency estimators, and the weights are composed of cubic B-splines. Interestingly, we show that this estimator can have both a smaller bias and variance than frequency estimators. As a means to obtain asymptotic normality and rates of convergence, we assume that the discreteness becomes finer as the sample size increases.  相似文献

Variable selection and error structure determination of a partially linear model with time series errors are important issues. In this paper, we investigate the regression coefficient and autoregressive order shrinkage and selection via the smoothly clipped absolute deviation penalty for a partially linear model with a divergent number of covariates and finite order autoregressive time series errors. Both consistency and asymptotic normality of the proposed penalized estimators are derived. The oracle property of the resultant estimators is proved. Simulation studies are carried out to assess the finite‐sample performance of the proposed procedure. A real data analysis is made to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed procedure as well.  相似文献

This paper proposes maximum likelihood estimators for panel seemingly unrelated regressions with both spatial lag and spatial error components. We study the general case where spatial effects are incorporated via spatial errors terms and via a spatial lag dependent variable and where the heterogeneity in the panel is incorporated via an error component specification. We generalize the approach of Wang and Kockelman (2007) and propose joint and conditional Lagrange multiplier tests for spatial autocorrelation and random effects for this spatial SUR panel model. The small sample performance of the proposed estimators and tests are examined using Monte Carlo experiments. An empirical application to hedonic housing prices in Paris illustrate these methods. The proposed specification uses a system of three SUR equations corresponding to three types of flats within 80 districts of Paris over the period 1990-2003. We test for spatial effects and heterogeneity and find reasonable estimates of the shadow prices for housing characteristics.  相似文献

We consider improved estimation strategies for the parameter matrix in multivariate multiple regression under a general and natural linear constraint. In the context of two competing models where one model includes all predictors and the other restricts variable coefficients to a candidate linear subspace based on prior information, there is a need of combining two estimation techniques in an optimal way. In this scenario, we suggest some shrinkage estimators for the targeted parameter matrix. Also, we examine the relative performances of the suggested estimators in the direction of the subspace and candidate subspace restricted type estimators. We develop a large sample theory for the estimators including derivation of asymptotic bias and asymptotic distributional risk of the suggested estimators. Furthermore, we conduct Monte Carlo simulation studies to appraise the relative performance of the suggested estimators with the classical estimators. The methods are also applied on a real data set for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

Variable selection for additive partially linear models with measurement error is considered. By the backfitting technique, we first propose a variable selection procedure for the parametric components based on the smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) penalization, and one-step spare estimates for parametric components are also presented. The resulting estimates perform asymptotic normality as well as an oracle property. Then, two-stage backfitting estimators are also presented for the nonparametric components by using the local linear method, and the structures of asymptotic biases and covariances of the proposed estimators are the same as those in partially linear model with measurement error. The finite sample performance of the proposed procedures is illustrated by simulation studies.  相似文献

Many estimation methods of truncated and censored regression models such as the maximum likelihood and symmetrically censored least squares (SCLS) are sensitive to outliers and data contamination as we document. Therefore, we propose a semiparametric general trimmed estimator (GTE) of truncated and censored regression, which is highly robust but relatively imprecise. To improve its performance, we also propose data-adaptive and one-step trimmed estimators. We derive the robust and asymptotic properties of all proposed estimators and show that the one-step estimators (e.g., one-step SCLS) are as robust as GTE and are asymptotically equivalent to the original estimator (e.g., SCLS). The finite-sample properties of existing and proposed estimators are studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations.  相似文献

In this paper we compare three estimators for the multivariate logit model: two asymptotically efficient methods and a consistent method. In this paper, we propose an estimator for the population mean when some observations on the study and auxiliary variables are missing from the sample. The proposed estimator is valid for any unequal probability sampling design, and is based upon the pseudo empirical likelihood method.
