Equity crowdfunding: First resort or last resort?

Prior research has focused on the factors that affect funding success on equity crowdfunding platforms, but a detailed understanding of the factors that drive firms to search for equity crowdfunding in the first place is lacking. Drawing on the pecking order theory, we argue that firms list on equity crowdfunding platforms as a “last resort”—that is, when they lack internal funds and additional debt capacity. In line with the pecking order theory, the empirical evidence shows that firms listed on equity crowdfunding platforms are less profitable, more often have excessive debt levels, and have more intangible assets than matched firms not listed on these platforms. We discuss the implications for theory and practice.

Google: The World’s First Information Utility?

In only ten years, Google has achieved remarkable success from online search-based advertising. Its search engine is dominant, and its IT infrastructure is the most powerful computing system in the world running on over one million computers and serving more than one billion users globally. Google makes money by using its search engine to deliver online advertising alongside responses to user searches for information, goods, maps, directions, and a host of other services. Its capabilities make it likely to become the world’s first information utility – a concept similar to electric utilities that provide services to many corporations and individuals alike. Constant innovation is the key to Google’s success and offers lessons for other companies: hire talented people, have them work in small teams, and give them freedom to excel, but use a rigorous data-based approach to evaluating results and making course adjustments.

GEM, 1964–1966: Britain's First Out-of-Town Retailer

Britain's first major out-of-town store opened in West Bridgford, Nottingham, in November 1964. Operated by an American company, GEM, it employed a concessionaire system. This paper traces the store from the planning phase to its opening, and provides some insights to the impressions this new retail format created at the time. GEM were not able to produce the results and expansion they anticipated in the United Kingdom, opening just one further store in Leeds in the spring of 1965. After just two years of UK trading the controlling interest in GEM's British operations was acquired by ASDA stores. The paper suggests some reasons for the failure of the GEM experiment and explores local impacts in West Bridgford. It concludes that the short-lived GEM operation may still be significant as a precursor of out-of-town retailing in the UK and an important step in the early development of ASDA.

煤炭市场:供大于求 价格下滑

<正> 今年以来,我国煤炭市场继续呈现供大于求,市场疲软,销售困难,价格下降的态势。下半年这种状况不会有大的变化。 一、当前煤炭供求状况。从煤炭供给看,由于受市场需求疲软的影响,煤炭供给继续呈现下降趋势,1997年全年煤炭供给下降幅度为3.6％,煤炭市场供大于求的形势并没有得到缓解,进入1998年,煤炭供给进一步下降,幅度也进一步加大。4月末,全国煤炭总供给量是9348万吨,比去年同期减少
