Suppose independent random samples are drawn from k (2) populations with a common location parameter and unequal scale parameters. We consider the problem of estimating simultaneously the hazard rates of these populations. The analogues of the maximum likelihood (ML), uniformly minimum variance unbiased (UMVU) and the best scale equivariant (BSE) estimators for the one population case are improved using Rao‐Blackwellization. The improved version of the BSE estimator is shown to be the best among these estimators. Finally, a class of estimators that dominates this improved estimator is obtained using the differential inequality approach.  相似文献

Following Parsian and Farsipour (1999), we consider the problem of estimating the mean of the selected normal population, from two normal populations with unknown means and common known variance, under the LINEX loss function. Some admissibility results for a subclass of equivariant estimators are derived and a sufficient condition for the inadmissibility of an arbitrary equivariant estimator is provided. As a consequence, several of the estimators proposed by Parsian and Farsipour (1999) are shown to be inadmissible and better estimators are obtained. Received January 2001/Revised May 2002  相似文献

We consider the problem of estimating the scale parameter θ of the shifted exponential distribution with unknown shift based on a set of observed records drawn from a sequential sample of independent and identically distributed random variables. Under a large class of bowl-shaped loss functions, the best affine equivariant estimator (BAEE) of θ is shown to be inadmissible. Two dominating procedures are proposed. A numerical study is performed to show the extent of risk reduction that the improved estimators provide over the BAEE.  相似文献

In this work we propose a technique of estimating the location parameter μ and scale parameter σ of log-gamma distribution by U-statistics constructed by taking best linear functions of order statistics as kernels. The efficiency comparison of the proposed estimators with respect to maximum likelihood estimators is also made.  相似文献

The usual methods of estimating the unknown parameters of a distribution, use only the information given from the sample data. In many cases, there is, also, another important information for estimating the unknown parameters of our model, such as the order of these parameters, and this last information improves the quality of estimation. In this paper, we deal with the problem of estimating the ordered scale parameters from two populations of the multivariate Lomax distribution, with unknown location parameters. It is proved that the best equivariant estimators of the scale parameters (in the unrestricted case) are not admissible and we construct estimators that improve upon the usual ones (when these parameters are known to be ordered).  相似文献

For contingency tables with extensive missing data, the unrestricted MLE under the saturated model, computed by the EM algorithm, is generally unsatisfactory. In this case, it may be better to fit a simpler model by imposing some restrictions on the parameter space. Perlman and Wu (1999) propose lattice conditional independence (LCI) models for contingency tables with arbitrary missing data patterns. When this LCI model fits well, the restricted MLE under the LCI model is more accurate than the unrestricted MLE under the saturated model, but not in general. Here we propose certain empirical Bayes (EB) estimators that adaptively combine the best features of the restricted and unrestricted MLEs. These EB estimators appear to be especially useful when the observed data is sparse, even in cases where the suitability of the LCI model is uncertain. We also study a restricted EM algorithm (called the ER algorithm) with similar desirable features. Received: July 1999  相似文献

In this study, three different estimators for estimating the proportion of a sensitive attribute in survey sampling are compared at equal protection of the respondents. The three estimators considered are due to Odumade and Singh (2009, Comm. Statist. Theory Methods) , Singh and Sedory (2011, Sociological Methods and Research) and a new estimator obtained by minimizing a chi‐squared distance. A SAS Macro is developed to compare these three estimators using a simulation study at equal protection of the respondents. A set of data from a real face‐to‐face interview was collected using two decks of cards and has been analyzed. The results are discussed.  相似文献

A large number of proposals for estimating the bivariate survival function under random censoring have been made. In this paper we discuss the most prominent estimators, where prominent is meant in the sense that they are best for practical use; Dabrowska's estimator, the Prentice–Cai estimator, Pruitt's modified EM-estimator, and the reduced data NPMLE of van der Laan. We show how these estimators are computed and present their intuitive background. The asymptotic results are summarized. Furthermore, we give a summary of the practical performance of the estimators under different levels of dependence and censoring based on extensive simulation results. This leads also to a practical advise.  相似文献

For estimatingp(⩾ 2) independent Poisson means, the paper considers a compromise between maximum likelihood and empirical Bayes estimators. Such compromise estimators enjoy both good componentwise as well as ensemble properties. Research supported by the NSF Grant Number MCS-8218091.  相似文献

Let X 1, X 2, ..., X n be a random sample from a normal distribution with unknown mean μ and known variance σ 2. In many practical situations, μ is known a priori to be restricted to a bounded interval, say [−m, m] for some m > 0. The sample mean , then, becomes an inadmissible estimator for μ. It is also not minimax with respect to the squared error loss function. Minimax and other estimators for this problem have been studied by Casella and Strawderman (Ann Stat 9:870–878, 1981), Bickel (Ann Stat 9:1301–1309, 1981) and Gatsonis et al. (Stat Prob Lett 6:21–30, 1987) etc. In this paper, we obtain some new estimators for μ. The case when the variance σ 2 is unknown is also studied and various estimators for μ are proposed. Risk performance of all estimators is numerically compared for both the cases when σ 2 may be known and unknown.  相似文献

This paper deals with the estimation of P[Y < X] when X and Y are two independent generalized exponential distributions with different shape parameters but having the same scale parameters. The maximum likelihood estimator and its asymptotic distribution is obtained. The asymptotic distribution is used to construct an asymptotic confidence interval of P[Y < X]. Assuming that the common scale parameter is known, the maximum likelihood estimator, uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator and Bayes estimator of P[Y < X] are obtained. Different confidence intervals are proposed. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to compare the different proposed methods. Analysis of a simulated data set has also been presented for illustrative purposes.Part of the work was supported by a grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council  相似文献

A characterization result of Kushary (1998) regarding universal admissibility of equivariant estimators in the one parameter gamma distribution is generalized to a scale family of distributions with monotone likelihood ratio. New examples are given, among them the F-distribution with a scale parameter. In particular, universal admissibility is characterized within the class of location-scale equivariant estimators of the ratio of the variances of two normal distributions with unknown means. In this context the maximum likelihood estimator is shown to be universally inadmissible by virtue of a general sufficient condition for universal inadmissibility of a scale equivariant estimator. Various models have been proposed as bivariate forms of the exponential distribution. A brief but comprehensive review is presented which classifies, interrelates and contrasts the different models and outlines what is known about distributional properties, applicability and estimation and testing of parameters (particularly the association parameter). Some new results are presented for one particular model. Maximum likelihood, and moment–type, estimators of the association parameter are examined. Asymptotic variances are derived and attention is given to the relative efficiency of the estimators and to problems of their evaluation.  相似文献

In this paper, we use the local influence method to study a vector autoregressive model under Students t‐distributions. We present the maximum likelihood estimators and the information matrix. We establish the normal curvature diagnostics for the vector autoregressive model under three usual perturbation schemes for identifying possible influential observations. The effectiveness of the proposed diagnostics is examined by a simulation study, followed by our data analysis using the model to fit the weekly log returns of Chevron stock and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index as an application.  相似文献

MIDZUNO'S sampling procedure is considered where the first (n – 1) draws are carried out with simple random sampling without replacement and the nth draw with varying probabilities. It is shown that for this scheme, the best estimator in the HORVITZ–THOMPSON (1952) Tt–class of linear estimators exists and rejects the last draw. When MURTHY'S technique of unordering of an ordered estimator is employed, the rejected draw is restored and the unordered estimator is obtained. Surprisingly, this unordered estimator is the same as the unordered best estimator in the T1–class, derived for IKEDA–SEN'S sampling procedure.  相似文献

We consider the problem of estimating a probability density function based on data that are corrupted by noise from a uniform distribution. The (nonparametric) maximum likelihood estimator for the corresponding distribution function is well defined. For the density function this is not the case. We study two nonparametric estimators for this density. The first is a type of kernel density estimate based on the empirical distribution function of the observable data. The second is a kernel density estimate based on the MLE of the distribution function of the unobservable (uncorrupted) data.  相似文献

Although there are many sophisticated models for estimation of failure rate based on censored data in continuous distributions, not much work has been done in the discrete case. We introduce a discrete model for life lengths and consider its properties. For this model, we derive the corresponding maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters under Type I and Type II right-censoring. Received May 2000  相似文献

In this paper, the maximum likelihood predictor (MLP) of the kth ordered observation, t k, in a sample of size n from a two-parameter exponential distribution as well as the predictive maximum likelihood estimators (PMLE's) of the location and scale parameters, θ and β, based on the observed values t r, …, t s (1≤rs<kn), are obtained in closed forms, contrary to the belief they cannot be so expressed. When θ is known, however, the PMLE of β and MLP of t k do not admit explicit expressions. It is shown here that they exist and are unique; sharp lower and upper bounds are also provided. The derived predictors and estimators are reasonable and also have good asymptotic properties. As applications, the total duration time in a life test and the failure time of a k-out-of-n system may be predicted. Finally, an illustrative example is included. Received: August 1999  相似文献

In this paper, we propose an estimator for the population mean when some observations on the study and auxiliary variables are missing from the sample. The proposed estimator is valid for any unequal probability sampling design, and is based upon the pseudo empirical likelihood method. The proposed estimator is compared with other estimators in a simulation study.  相似文献
