ERP system implementation in SMEs: exploring the influences of the SME context

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly implementing enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. Compared to large enterprises, SMEs differ in a number of inherent characteristics, which are likely to impact the ERP system implementations. The purpose of this study is to explore these influences of the SME context on the ERP system implementation process. SME characteristics are synthesised from relevant literature and the influences of the contextual factors on various activities across the ERP life cycle are investigated. The study presents findings from a multiple case study of four SMEs. The ownership type of the companies and limited resources were identified as the most influential contextual factors. Among the ERP life-cycle phases, the implementation phase was affected most by the SME context. The case studies also illustrate the need for a more nuanced view on what should be considered general characteristics of SMEs; for example, regarding the level of IS knowledge, business processes, and market characteristics.

A method for improving ERP implementation success by the principles and process of user-centred design

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are implemented to increase the productivity and operational efficiency of companies. However, the implementation activities and changes within operational processes pose a temporary threat to productivity. Reported difficulties in implementation projects frequently relate to organisational and human-centred issues; like the ability and motivation of the organisation to accept the new ERP system. User-centred design (UCD) is a multidisciplinary process that aims at improving human working conditions by early user involvement in the system design, e.g. user observation or usability testing. UCD was originally developed for the design of interactive computer systems. The underlying question for this research is how the principles and process of UCD can be applied to ensure the usability of an ERP system. This article presents: first, a literature review of ERP implementations; second, a literature review of UCD applications; third, a method to combine the UCD and ERP system implementation processes; and finally a discussion of the UCD approach for ERP implementation.     

Simulating mining policies in developing countries: The case of Colombia

Mining represents an important economic sector in almost all countries, especially the developing ones. The planning in this area is complex due to the interaction between different aspects like economic factors, environmental and social issues, and government regulation. A tool for policy analysis is needed to understand and test the effects of new and existing policies and avoid unanticipated side effects. The article develops a generic model for analyzing the mining sector of a country and demonstrates how it can be calibrated to test a set of alternative scenarios for the future of mining in Colombia.

New product development projects: The effects of organizational culture

Despite the increasing use of project management within organizations, an attendant poor rate of success among these projects has been observed (Clancy & Stone, 2005; Ives, 2005). Seventy‐five percent of all business transformation projects fail (Collyer, 2000) and only 16% of U.S. IT projects are completed on time and on budget (Peled, 2000). In an attempt to overcome such a high project failure rate, this paper investigates the effects of organizational culture on the performance of particular types of projects: new product development (NPD) projects. Using data from 95 U.S. organizations, the study provides evidence of the significant effects of organizational culture on NPD projects.

Multinationals,national business systems and HRM: the enduring influence of national identity or a process of 'Anglo-Saxonization'

This paper discusses the 'nationality effect' in the management of HRM by multinational companies (MNCs). After reviewing relevant literature in the institutionalist tradition and on 'national business systems', it assesses the elements of national environments that are most likely to influence MNC behaviour. It explores the tensions arising between the requirements of 'globalized' operations and the characteristics MNCs have adopted from their home environment. It is suggested that MNCs respond to such tensions by adopting various adaptation strategies, the most important of which may be termed 'Anglo-Saxonization': a convergence of MNC behaviour around a model typical of highly internationalized British or US MNCs. The argument is illustrated by findings from two German case studies, one of a large manufacturer, the other of a major bank; evidence is found of the Anglo-Saxonization of international HRM in these companies, but it appears to be taking place in a distinctively German manner.

结合大量文献及对企业ERP实施的调研分析,基于创新扩散理论(DOI)构建了包含企业内外部影响因素(ERP兼容性、ERP复杂性、ERP相对优越性、企业管理机制、企业复杂性、外部竞争压力、高层管理者支持、业务流程重组和实施顾问)和衡量ERP实施成功的两大标准(ERP扩散广度和ERP扩散深度)的ERP创新实施成功模型,提出相应理论假设;并以中国企业为样本进行问卷调研和统计分析,实证结果表明,其中ERP相对优越性、ERP复杂性、高层管理者支持、企业复杂性、实施顾问、竞争压力和企业管理机制对ERP实施成功具有显著影响。

金蝶ERP系统与自主研发系统的集成研究

基于金蝶ERP系统开放的SDK(Software Development Kit)和VB(Visual Basic)语言开发集成接口程序。实现将共享集团某公司正在使用自主研发系统进行车间现场生产领料、工序汇报等业务产生的数据、或者独立的第三方系统产生的与ERP核算相关的业务数据,定期或实时同步至金蝶ERP系统,同时能够实现将集成结果反写至自主研发系统中,避免反写数据重复操作或者遗漏,从而实现两个系统的双向集成。
