Cultural partnership: The old fire station arts centre, Oxford

This article explains the creation of a partnership between Oxford City Council and Apollo Leisure pic to develop with others a live music and arts centre in Oxford. It puts the development in the context of the City Council's arts and cultural policies and their economic impact. It explains the nature of the partnership, including the finances, management and programming, and the benefits the parties see in the partnership. It also addresses wider policy issues.     

The Agricultural Depression, Collegiate Finances, and Provision for Education at Oxford, 1871–1913

This article considers the agricultural depression of 1873–96, and its implications for college finances and educational provision at Oxford from 1871 to 1913. Most colleges' agricultural income decreased markedly in money terms, particularly between 1883 and 1893, but the depression's impact was unevenly spread across the colleges. A general fall in the cost of living index mitigated the colleges' loss of income. No marked redistribution of income occurred. Collegiate contributions to the university proved less than anticipated and consequently university teaching, including scientific education, suffered.     

Turning to Adam Smith Ian Simpson Ross Oxford University Press, 1995, 495 pp.

The Glasgow edition of the works and correspondence of Adam Smith, published by Oxford University Press since 1976, must be rated among the great editorial enterprises of the 20th century as far as political economy is concerned. The edition is now complete after the publication of the second (and last) associated volume devoted to the life of Adam Smith. Ian Simpson Ross's biographical work is the object of the present paper. Ross's book is discussed in connection with the ongoing debate on Smithian political economy. It is the purpose of this paper to show in what ways this biography can help readers of Smith to bring some of the main issues of the debate into proper focus.A preliminary draft of this paper was presented at the first conference of the European Society for the History of Economic Thought in Marseilles, France, February 27-March 2, 1997.
