We study retailer bundling in a distribution channel when the manufacturer for one bundled product can strategically set the wholesale price. We show that the retailer can use a bundling option as a strategic leverage to extract concessions from the manufacturer in form of a lower wholesale price. This finding contributes a novel rationale for retailer bundling to the bundling literature. Whenever the bundling option causes this concession-extraction effect, the retailer always benefits from the lower wholesale price. The manufacturer, nevertheless, does not necessarily suffer because bundling can lead to a higher consumer demand. We also show that the manufacturer's marginal production cost plays a critical role in driving the retailer's bundling decision, concession extraction behavior and consequently the total channel profit.  相似文献

Partitioned pricing charges a base price and a surcharge instead of an equivalent all‐inclusive price. In contrast, a bundling strategy offers a bundled price instead of separate prices for products in one package. Which pricing practice is more profitable? Previous research has shown conflicting results. This research identifies the boundary conditions which circumscribe the profitability of partitioned and bundled pricing. Results of three experiments indicate that the relative significance of the surcharge to the base price influences consumers' perception of the fairness of the surcharge, which in turn influences consumer purchase intentions. Furthermore, given the same level of surcharge, consumers' perceptions of the fairness of the surcharge moderates the effect of the pricing strategies. Thus, perceived fairness of the surcharge appears to be the key in determining whether or not the partitioning strategy is more profitable than the bundling strategy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

This study investigates the consequences of price image. Two conditions, a policy of intermediate price condition and a policy of low price condition, were distinguished in an experiment. Three moderators (consumers' price conscientiousness, retailer's motives perceived by consumers and consumers' familiarity with the retailer) were considered for these two conditions. Using partial least squares analyses (PLS), we propose integrated models of the consequences of price image highlighting the direct and indirect effects of this concept on consumers' satisfaction, trust, attitude and future behavioral intentions to the retailer. This research fills a gap in the literature since previous studies have mainly focused on the antecedents of price image or have only investigated specific links between the variables considered. Finally, considering our findings, we recommend to managers to favor either a policy of intermediate or low price depending of their consumers' characteristics.  相似文献

This study investigates the impact of a retailer's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy and its price image on retailer personality, along with the impact of these two variables on the consequences of retailer personality: consumers' satisfaction, trust and loyalty toward the retailer (measured by their attitude and future behavioral intentions). Data were collected on a convenience sample of 352 consumers of a French grocery retailer. Using Partial Least Squares analysis (PLS), we show that perceived Corporate Social Responsibility and price image have a significant positive/negative influence on retailer personality traits (“agreeableness” and “conscientiousness”/“disingenuousness”) and that Corporate Social Responsibility has also a significant positive influence on the “sophistication” personality trait. For the consequences examined (satisfaction, trust and loyalty to the retailer), we show that Corporate Social Responsibility, price image and retailer personality have a direct or indirect impact on these dependent variables.  相似文献

Marketers often attempt to increase consumers' perceptions of value by raising the quality or reducing the price of products. Five studies demonstrate that consumers are generally more sensitive to lower-price promotions than to higher-quality promotions as they form their perceptions of retailer reputation (Study 1), that the perceived value mediates this effect (Study 2), that store image (prestigious vs. thrifty) moderates the effect (Study 3), and that perceived price level (Study 4) and quality level (Study 5) independently drive the moderating effect of store image.  相似文献

This research examines the effects of consumers' perceptions of retailers' deceptive practices on their evaluations of online and offline retailers. Results from two samples of consumers (shopping in online versus offline channels) show the direct and indirect influence of consumers' perceptions of retailers' deceptive practices on consumers' evaluations, including product satisfaction, retailer satisfaction and word-of-mouth. Perceptions of deception influence retailer satisfaction through product satisfaction, and word-of-mouth through retailer satisfaction. These mediated effects are further moderated by the online vs. offline purchase channel. Implications for theory and management are discussed.  相似文献

This paper explores an omnichannel retail system under which the retailer offers coupons via online channels for market share and profit. It investigates the action mechanism of coupon promotion on omnichannel price and operational decisions by employing a theoretical model. Three coupon distribution modes are investigated; a scenario in which the omnichannel retailer does not offer coupons, offers coupons with a common face value, or offers coupons with a different face value. The results show that the distribution of coupons does not always lead to increased market share. Rather, market volume may be reduced if the competition between different channels is intense. When conducting a coupon promotion, the retailer always charges a higher price, but if the negative effects of coupon promotion for the competitive channel are relatively large, the retailer will reduce their price. Larger cross-selling revenue comes from ‘Buy Online, Pick Up in Store’ channel, indicating a stronger willingness to offer coupons and higher profits for the retailer. If the retailer takes the channel characteristics and consumers' channel preferences into consideration and offers different coupon face values across channels, they will derive higher profits.  相似文献

Two studies were conducted in which respondents were exposed to test advertisements in which the amount of savings implied by a reference price discount claim was manipulated. Respondents' attributions concerning the advertiser's motives for making the reference price discount claim were measured, along with dependent variables that assessed the respondents' evaluations of the price offer. Results across both studies indicated that the attributions about the advertiser's motives for the price discount offer had a significant effect on consumers' evaluations of the offer. Furthermore, across both studies, a person-stimulus-circumstance taxonomy appeared consistent with the structure of the attributions that respondents made when presented with reference price claims.  相似文献

Despite the widespread prevalence of online shopping cart abandonment (OSCA) and allusions to this behavior in popular press, scholars have yet to examine the key determinants of OSCA. This study used the stimulus-organism-response (S–O-R) model to explore the factors influencing consumers' OSCA and decision to buy from a land-based retailer. Two studies were carried out to test the proposed hypotheses among Mainland China's Generation Y consumers. Data was collected based on two product categories (i.e., apparel and electrical appliances) at two different time scenarios (i.e., pre- and post-pandemic). The findings reveal that hesitation at checkout increases OSCA, while consumers' decision to buy from a land-based retailer is influenced by their emotional ambivalence and OSCA. Furthermore, fear appeals appear to weaken the relationship between OSCA and the decision to buy from a land-based retailer. This study has implications for researchers and practitioners who seek to effectively reduce the rate of OSCA.  相似文献

In order to enhance both purchase willingness and consumer satisfaction, firms may sell products in a customized bundling way, with which consumers are allowed to select their preferred products to form a bundle. However, such a way needs to be carried out with an efficient strategic tool. This study contributes to the literature by proposing a two-stage customized bundling strategy with the aims of maximizing the firm's profit and satisfying the consumers' demands. The proposed strategy may assist managers in enhancing consumer satisfaction and loyalty under consideration of consumer heterogeneity. Consumers can select one main product with the greatest utility from the main product category at the first stage, and then, at the second, consider the associations between the chosen main and possible add-on products in the add-on product category, and finally select an add-on product to form a customized bundle with the greatest overall utility. Pricing strategies are investigated and compared for the customized and other traditional bundling strategies. The results show that when consumers are highly sensitive in their preferences, the use of a customized bundling strategy would be more profitable. However, in an extreme case when the consumer's perceived value of the add-on product and product association are both high, the traditional individual sales strategy would earn more profits than the customized bundling strategy.  相似文献

This study investigates the important role of a retailer's return policy in consumers' decision making. Utilizing signaling theory and the Cue Diagnosticity framework, this study posits that return policy, as a cue from a retailer, interacts with other cues (product, price, and product quality) to reduce perceived purchase risk and increases store image and patronage intention. Employing factorial experiment design, the authors conduct two studies and find support for several hypotheses. Results show that consumers value return policies depending upon the situation. A lenient return policy drives down purchase risk and leads consumers to have positive store images and higher patronage intentions. Both theoretical and managerial implications of the findings are provided.  相似文献

The uncertainty about product quality has increased in online settings, and consumers' often use multiple product cues to assess product quality. The authors have tested the simultaneous effects of multiple product cues in Pay-what-you-want (PWYW) online settings. PWYW lacks posted prices and allows buyers to decide the prices. This paper investigates how consumers process multiple cues of varying diagnostic nature simultaneously and form product quality perceptions. Specifically, study 1 examines the interactions among seller reputation, online product presentation, and external reference price and study 2 examines the interaction effect of third-party reviews and online product presentation and the external reference price. The results add to the theoretical domain by suggesting that consumers' online cue processing behaviour is much more complicated than previously presented in the literature.  相似文献

Sales management plays an important role in firms' profit. Its main goal is to determine the best time to present insurance customers with prices, insurers, bundling strategies, and the intermediary's recommendation. In this study, a triangular approach was used. For attribute selection, three focus groups were performed with insurance customers and intermediaries. Conjoint analysis was carried out by presenting the attributes in three different orders.Primacy and recency effects were detected; a transfer or anchor effect was also found related to the importance of the attributes preceding and succeeding a given attribute.According to the findings, salespeople can improve their approach to customers by decreasing the importance given to price and increasing the positive impact of bundling strategies and the intermediary's recommendation in sales.Although the order of attribute presentation has previously been analyzed, this is the first study to examine this issue in non-life insurance products, providing useful information to insurance salespeople and marketing managers for a better understanding of insurance customers’ buying decision process.  相似文献

This paper considers a supply chain with a single manufacturer selling a national brand product via a single retailer. The retailer has the option to introduce a product under his own brand into the market with the same functionality as the national brand product. We simultaneously consider the consumer bases of the national brand and store brand along with consumers' willingness to pay for quality and the supply chain control (centralized vs. decentralized). By analyzing the game-theoretic models, we offer managerial insights about the influences of brands' consumer bases on the quality and pricing decisions of the retailer, and on the manufacturer's willingness-to-collaborate when the retailer introduces the store brand product. We find that, although it is usually easier for the retailer to introduce a product under a store brand with a large consumer base, doing so with manufacturers of well established national brands can be difficult, when the retailer often has to greatly mark down his store brand product's quality and price. We also find that a store brand product with a small consumer base shall be launched only when the supply chain is switched to a centralized control and when the manufacturer's national brand has a large consumer base. These important findings offer guidance to both national brand manufacturers and retail store managers regarding the launch of store brand products.  相似文献

Although consumer–retailer exchange behavior has been studied for many years, its treatment has not accounted for factors relating to reciprocal exchange intentions. This article defines reciprocity as the degree to which individuals expect cooperative action, and places reciprocity within the overall framework of consumer–retailer market exchange. In addition, it presents results of an exploratory study of rural consumers' reciprocal intentions to shop with local retailers, indicating that levels of satisfaction with interpersonal reciprocity have greater influence than moral, social, or economic motives. This study also suggests that social desirability, as a bias, is strongly linked to rural consumers' responses. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In recent years, omnichannel retailing has created value for prospective consumers. The rise of omnichannel retailing has changed consumers' buying habits, and manufacturers are facing stiff competition from retailers. To reduce this competition effect, manufacturers and retailers often work together to reduce showroom display costs. Despite this practice, there is little understanding of how omnichannel retailing impacts supply chain (SC) profit under competitive conditions. We investigate the test-in-store-and-buy-online (TSBO) retailing strategy and its impact on SC profit and price competition between manufacturers. The retailer sells products of both manufacturers through its website but displays products of only one manufacturer in the showroom, which bears the displaying cost. The retailer adopts a return policy for the other manufacturer. Stackelberg game was used to examine how members of the chain interact, and Nash equilibrium was used to find optimal strategies for players under decentralized and integrated channels. The results show that the TSBO strategy in retailing benefits all supply chain players under the integrated channel. A further interesting finding is that omnichannel SC profits are highest when retailers adopt a return policy. When two manufacturers compete and adopt different sales models, the manufacturer who uses the TSBO retail model reaps the most profit. Several other managerial insights are drawn from sensitivity analyses.  相似文献

This study investigates how consumers utilize an advertised reference price and the posted sale price (SP) as anchors to adjust their internal reference prices (IRP). As expected, the effect of SP on IRP depends on the magnitude and direction of deviation from the IRP. When the posted SP exceeds IRP, it exerts an upward pressure on IRP, whereas when it falls below IRP, it has a negative impact. Consistent with prior research, consumers rely at least partially on the advertised reference price to adjust their IRP. The saving presentation format also moderates the effects of gains and losses on IRP but does not influence offer evaluation directly. Results suggest that retailers can enhance evaluations directly by pricing their products appropriately relative to consumers' IRP and indirectly through the choice of saving presentation format.  相似文献

This article offers a context-dependent theory of how price changes influence consumer purchase choice for fast moving consumer goods (FMCGs) for manufacturer (large household share) and retailer (small household share) brands. The theory proposes that the influence of price on demand is systematically very sensitive to context effects; more specifically, the theory includes the hypothesis that elasticity is much greater when the price change results in the manufacturer and retailer brands having the same price compared to when the price change keeps the manufacturer brand price above the retailer brand price. The implicit and/or explicit association with higher quality with the manufacturer versus retailer brand may be the main reason for buying the higher priced manufacturer brand. Decreasing the price of the manufacturer brand to equal the retailer brand's price takes away the primary reason for buying the retailer brand (i.e., saving money); increasing the price of the retailer brand to equal the manufacturer brand's price has the same effect. The empirical findings in the studies that this article reports support the hypothesis and confirm Scriven and Ehrenberg's [2004. Consistent consumer responses to price changes. Australas. Mark. J. 12(3), 21–39] major conclusion that relative order of price is more important than relative distance.  相似文献

This study examines empirically how Chinese consumers evaluate and respond to foreign products made in Japan. Specifically, it examines the moderating effects of materialism and susceptibility to normative influence on the effects of country-specific animosity on willingness to buy foreign products. The results confirm that the effect of consumers' animosity is subject to both consumers' personal values (for example, materialism) and social influences (susceptibility to normative influence). In terms of willingness to buy foreign products, the negative effect of economic animosity is alleviated by consumers' materialism, whereas that of war animosity is strengthened by consumers' susceptibility to normative influence. In turn, evidence from this study suggests implications for marketing strategies in developing countries.  相似文献

There is reason to believe that consumers face a difficult task in securing adequate and accurate information upon which to judge relative price levels of competing foodstores. The objective of the research reported here was to investigate the potential of retail food price reporting for correcting this information problem. Both consumer and grocery retailer responses to this comparative food price information were analyzed. A pretest-post-test design with four pairs of experimental-control cities (with replications at two levels of concentration) was employed to collect price data. A modified Solomon-four group design was used for surveys of food consumers in experimental and control cities. The results of analysis of variance models lend support to the hypothesis that price reporting can lower the relative level of food prices, both for items individually identified in a price report and items not identified in the report. The magnitude of this effect varied among the cities. It appears that consumers' role in this experiment was a passive one: consumer behavior and patronage patterns did not change in a manner that would consistently reinforce the competitive effects of the price reports.  相似文献
