Summary When elements of a finite population are sampled with varying probability selection at each draw,Horvitz andThompson [1952] have formulated certain classes of linear estimators to bear on the problem of providing a smaple appraisal of the population total.Horvitz andThompson's T 1 class is an ordered one, which was examined by the present author [1967 b]. For some sampling procedures a best estimator exists for theT 1 class. Subsequently the present author [1967 c] appliedMurthy's technique [Murthy 1967] of unordering an ordered estimator and derived a more efficient estimator. The present paper is concerned with applyingMurthy's technique to theT 1 class itself, and examining the unorderedT 1 class. Curiously enough, it is noted that the condition of unbiasedness is sufficient to completely specify the unorderedT 1 class for the sampling procedure considered here.Research sponsored by Marathwada University, Aurangabad, India; under Grant No. Research-12-68-69/3314-16.  相似文献

Summary The question of availability of a unique best estimator inHorvitz-Thompson's T 1-class of estimators is dealt with in general and a simple sampling scheme yielding such an estimator is found out; the efficiency of the same is studied and a method of improving on it is also discussed.  相似文献

Summary The variance function of a linear estimator can be expressed into a quadratic form. The present paper presents classes of estimators of this quadratic form along the lines implicitly suggested byHorvitz andThompson [1952] while formulating the classes of linear estimators. Accordingly it is noted that there exist nine principal classes of estimators out of which one principal class is examined in detail. Furthermore to illustrate the theory an example is considered where the expression for a unique estimator variance of the best estimator in theT 1 class is derived.  相似文献

Mean profiles are widely used as indicators of the electricity consumption habits of customers. Currently, in Électricité De France (EDF), class load profiles are estimated using point‐wise mean profiles. Unfortunately, it is well known that the mean is highly sensitive to the presence of outliers, such as one or more consumers with unusually high‐levels of consumption. In this paper, we propose an alternative to the mean profile: the L 1 ‐ median profile which is more robust. When dealing with large data sets of functional data (load curves for example), survey sampling approaches are useful for estimating the median profile avoiding storing the whole data. We propose here several sampling strategies and estimators to estimate the median trajectory. A comparison between them is illustrated by means of a test population. We develop a stratification based on the linearized variable which substantially improves the accuracy of the estimator compared to simple random sampling without replacement. We suggest also an improved estimator that takes into account auxiliary information. Some potential areas for future research are also highlighted.  相似文献

In the paper, we consider the following problem: Let {πk} be a sequence satisfying 0πkΣ1 (k=1,…, N) and π=n.Tben, is there an unordered sampling design such that, for each k=1,…N, the inclusion probability of unit k is equal to π? It is shown that it can be solved by the straightforward application of the Minkowski-Farkas theorem.  相似文献

T 2 charts are used to monitor a process when more than one quality variable associated with process is being observed. Recent studies have shown that the T 2 chart with variable sampling size and sampling interval (VSSI) detects a small shift in the process mean vector faster than the traditional T 2 chart. The paper considers an economic design of the VSSI T 2 chart, in which the expected hourly loss is constructed and regarded as an objective function for optimally determining the design parameters (i.e. the maximum/minimum sample size, the longest/shortest sampling interval, and the warning/action limits) in sampling-and-charting. Furthermore, the effects of process parameters and cost parameters upon the expected hourly loss and design parameters are examined.  相似文献

In the lognormal linear models the estimation of constant term presents problems. In this paper we use weighted jackknife procedure (suggested by Hinkley 1977) for reducing the bias of the maximum likelihood estimator. The resulting estimator is unbiased upto order (1/T),T being the number of observations, and has the same MSE as that of the MLE to the same order of approximation; moreover, being the jackknife estimator it enjoys all the desirable large sample properties like any other jackknife estimator. This paper studies the efficient estimation of large‐dimensional factor models with both time and cross‐sectional dependence assuming (N,T) separability of the covariance matrix. The asymptotic distribution of the estimator of the factor and factor‐loading space under factor stationarity is derived and compared to that of the principal component (PC) estimator. The paper also considers the case when factors exhibit a unit root. We provide feasible estimators and show in a simulation study that they are more efficient than the PC estimator in finite samples. In application, the estimation procedure is employed to estimate the Lee–Carter model and life expectancy is forecast. The Dutch gender gap is explored and the relationship between life expectancy and the level of economic development is examined in a cross‐country comparison.  相似文献

In this paper, Bayesian estimation of log odds ratios over R × C and 2 × 2 × K contingency tables is considered, which is practically reasonable in the presence of prior information. Likelihood functions for log odds ratios are derived for each table structure. A prior specification strategy is proposed. Posterior inferences are drawn using Gibbs sampling and Metropolis–Hastings algorithm. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the matters argued.  相似文献

This paper considers estimation and inference in linear panel regression models with lagged dependent variables and/or other weakly exogenous regressors when N (the cross‐section dimension) is large relative to T (the time series dimension). It allows for fixed and time effects (FE‐TE) and derives a general formula for the bias of the FE‐TE estimator which generalizes the well‐known Nickell bias formula derived for the pure autoregressive dynamic panel data models. It shows that in the presence of weakly exogenous regressors inference based on the FE‐TE estimator will result in size distortions unless N/T is sufficiently small. To deal with the bias and size distortion of the FE‐TE estimator the use of a half‐panel jackknife FE‐TE estimator is considered and its asymptotic distribution is derived. It is shown that the bias of the half‐panel jackknife FE‐TE estimator is of order T?2, and for valid inference it is only required that N/T3→0, as N,T jointly. Extension to unbalanced panel data models is also provided. The theoretical results are illustrated with Monte Carlo evidence. It is shown that the FE‐TE estimator can suffer from large size distortions when N>T, with the half‐panel jackknife FE‐TE estimator showing little size distortions. The use of half‐panel jackknife FE‐TE estimator is illustrated with two empirical applications from the literature.  相似文献

Summary A general class of estimators for estimating the population mean of the character under study which make use of auxiliary information is proposed. Under simple random sampling without replacement (SRSWOR), the expressions of Bias and Mean Square Error (MSE), up to the first and the second degrees of approximation are derived. General conditions, up to the first order approximation, are also obtained under which any member of this class performs more efficiently than the mean per unit estimator, the ratio estimator and the product estimator. The class of estimators in its optimum case, under the first degree approximation, is discussed. It is shown that it is not possible to obtain optimum values of parameters “a”, “b” and “p”, that are independent of each other. However, the optimum relation among them is given by (ba)p=ρ C y/C x. Under this condition, the expression of MSE of the class is that of the linear regression estimator.  相似文献

Summary “Stratificationprocedures for a typical auditing problem”. During the past ten years, much experience was gained in The Netherlands in using random sampling methods for typical auditing problems. Especially, a method suggested by VAN. HEERDEN [2] turned out to be very fruitful. In this method a register of entries is considered to be a population of T guilders, if all entries total up to T guilders. The sample size n0 is determined in such a way that the probability β not to find any mistake in the sample, if a fraction p0 or more of T is incorrect, is smaller than a preassigned value β0. So n0 should satisfy (l-p)n0≤β0 for pp0. A complication arises if it is not possible to postpone sampling until the whole population T is available. One then wants to take samples from a population which is growing up to T. Suppose one is going to take samples ni from e.g. r subpopulations Using the minimax procedure, it is shown, that in this case one should choose the sizes ni equal to (Ti/T)n0. The minimax-value of the probability not to find any incorrect guilder in the r samples, taken together is equal to β0.  相似文献

During the last three decades, integer‐valued autoregressive process of order p [or INAR(p)] based on different operators have been proposed as a natural, intuitive and maybe efficient model for integer‐valued time‐series data. However, this literature is surprisingly mute on the usefulness of the standard AR(p) process, which is otherwise meant for continuous‐valued time‐series data. In this paper, we attempt to explore the usefulness of the standard AR(p) model for obtaining coherent forecasting from integer‐valued time series. First, some advantages of this standard Box–Jenkins's type AR(p) process are discussed. We then carry out our some simulation experiments, which show the adequacy of the proposed method over the available alternatives. Our simulation results indicate that even when samples are generated from INAR(p) process, Box–Jenkins's model performs as good as the INAR(p) processes especially with respect to mean forecast. Two real data sets have been employed to study the expediency of the standard AR(p) model for integer‐valued time‐series data.  相似文献

The construction of an importance density for partially non‐Gaussian state space models is crucial when simulation methods are used for likelihood evaluation, signal extraction, and forecasting. The method of efficient importance sampling is successful in this respect, but we show that it can be implemented in a computationally more efficient manner using standard Kalman filter and smoothing methods. Efficient importance sampling is generally applicable for a wide range of models, but it is typically a custom‐built procedure. For the class of partially non‐Gaussian state space models, we present a general method for efficient importance sampling. Our novel method makes the efficient importance sampling methodology more accessible because it does not require the computation of a (possibly) complicated density kernel that needs to be tracked for each time period. The new method is illustrated for a stochastic volatility model with a Student's t distribution.  相似文献

Summary Horvitz andThompson [1952] considered varying probability sampling method in general and furnished an unbiased estimator of the population total.Rao, Hartley andCochran [1962] proposed a simple procedure of unequal probability sampling with replacement. It leads to an estimator of the population total having smaller variance than is obtained by sampling with replacement. An attempt has been made in the present paper to compare efficiencies ofHorvitz-Thompson's estimator with that due toRao, hartley andCochran. It is demonstrated that the generalized ps sampling strategy consisting of the design with i , the probability of inclusion of thei-th population unit in the sample proportional to the modified size together withHorvitz-Thompson's estimator is superior toRao, Hartley andCochran's sampling strategy under a general super-population model.  相似文献

Let (T n ) n≥1 be a sequence random variables (rv) of interest distributed as T. In censorship models the rv T is subject to random censoring by another rv C. Let θ be the mode of T. In this paper we define a new smooth kernel estimator [^(q)]n{\hat{\theta}_n} of θ and establish its almost sure convergence under an α-mixing condition.  相似文献

In this paper, we study application of Le Cam's one‐step method to parameter estimation in ordinary differential equation models. This computationally simple technique can serve as an alternative to numerical evaluation of the popular non‐linear least squares estimator, which typically requires the use of a multistep iterative algorithm and repetitive numerical integration of the ordinary differential equation system. The one‐step method starts from a preliminary ‐consistent estimator of the parameter of interest and next turns it into an asymptotic (as the sample size n ) equivalent of the least squares estimator through a numerically straightforward procedure. We demonstrate performance of the one‐step estimator via extensive simulations and real data examples. The method enables the researcher to obtain both point and interval estimates. The preliminary ‐consistent estimator that we use depends on non‐parametric smoothing, and we provide a data‐driven methodology for choosing its tuning parameter and support it by theory. An easy implementation scheme of the one‐step method for practical use is pointed out.  相似文献

We consider the problem of constructing simultaneous fixed-width confidence intervals for all pairwise treatment differences μ1−μ J , in the presence ofk(≥2) independent populationsN p 1,Σ), 1≤ijk. Appropriate purely sequential, accelerated sequential and three-stage sampling strategies have been developed and variousfirst-order asymptotic properties are then derived when Σ pxp is completely unknown, but positive definite (p.d.). In the two special cases when the largest component variance in Σ is a known multiple of one of the variances or Σ=σ2 H where σ(>0) is unknown, butH pxp is known and p.d., the original multistage sampling strategies are specialized. Under such special circumstances, associatedsecond-order characteristics are then developed. It is to be noted that our present formulation and the methodologies fill important voids in the context of multivariate multiple comparisons which is a challenging area that has not yet been fully explored. Moderate sample performances of the proposed techniques were very encouraging and detailed remarks on these were included in Mukhopadhyay and Aoshima (1997).  相似文献

This paper studies one‐dimensional Ornstein–Uhlenbeck (OU) processes, with the distinguishing feature that they are reflected on a single boundary (put at level 0) or two boundaries (put at levels 0 and d > 0). In the literature, they are referred to as reflected OU (ROU) and doubly reflected OU (DROU), respectively. For both cases, we explicitly determine the decay rates of the (transient) probability to reach a given extreme level. The methodology relies on sample‐path large deviations, so that we also identify the associated most likely paths. For DROU, we also consider the ‘idleness process’ Lt and the ‘loss process’ Ut, which are the minimal non‐decreasing processes, which make the OU process remain ≥ 0 and ≤ d, respectively. We derive central limit theorems (CLTs) for Ut and Lt, using techniques from stochastic integration and the martingale CLT.  相似文献

Consider the problem of estimating a mean vector in ap-variate normal distribution under two-stage sequential sampling schemes. The paper proposes a stopping rule motivated by the James-Stein shrinkage estimator, and shows that the stopping rule and the corresponding shrinkage estimator asymptotically dominate the usual two-stage procedure under a sequence of local alternatives forp3. Also the results of Monte Carlo simulation for average sample sizes and risks of estimators are stated.  相似文献
