Regional concentration of population and economic activity is a common phenomenon both in Finland and the other most developed countries, which refers to the existence of agglomeration economies. Two types of economies are usually recognized to be important: specialization (Marshall externalities) and diversity (Jacobs externalities) economies. The former refer to the geographical concentration of a specific industry and the latter to the industrial diversity of the local system. This study examines the relationship between agglomeration economies and regional productivity in the manufacturing sector in Finland. A distinction is made between the effects of urbanization and localization economies. The production function method is applied to the manufacturing sub-sectors in the 83 NUTS 4-level regions in 1995 and 1999. The results support the regional specialization more than diversification even if some differences can be seen between the manufacturing sub-sectors.  相似文献

Recent theories have provided a persuasive account of a key stylized fact of mature economies: the common long-run trends of average real wages and labor productivity, and the ensuing stationarity of functional distribution. Central to these theories is the notion of directed technical change, which claims that a rise in labor costs sparks the adoption of labor-saving innovations. This paper empirically examines a core prediction of these theories, namely that shocks to functional distribution elicit compensatory adjustments in real product wages and labor productivity. Using two disaggregated data-sets of manufacturing industries (EU-Klems and Unido), I find evidence of cointegration and two-way, long-run Granger causality between these two variables. These findings suggest that directed technical change is indeed key for producing stationarity in functional distribution, and they complement the recent empirical literature on distributive cycles and productivity growth. Preliminary evidence from the Unido data-set also suggests the importance of directed technical change in developing countries. To illuminate the empirical procedure, I present a theoretical model of growth and distribution with directed technical change.  相似文献

This paper presents a study of the technical efficiency of industries in a transitional economy: China. Using data for 28 manufacturing industries across 29 provinces and the Data Envelopment Analysis approach, the technical efficiency of each industry is measured and compared across regions and provinces. The determinants of differential technical efficiency performance are analysed, with a particular focus on the impact of trade orientation and foreign investment. Trade openness is found generally to have a positive effect on technical efficiency.  相似文献

The purpose of the paper is to develop a cost frontier model and its robust estimation for analyzing the impact of scale economies in the manufacturing sector. Indirectly our estimates provide a test of the new growth theory which emphasizes the role of increasing returns to scale as a major force in the sustained growth process. An illustrative application to the South Korean manufacturing sector finds strong supportive evidence for significant scale economies, though in recent years it may be declining for the Korean economy.  相似文献

The debate between the skill-biased technological change (SBTC) approach and the international trade (IT) explanation to obtain the best explanation for the wage gap between skilled and unskilled workers continues. In this article, we divide the Portuguese manufacturing industries into high-tech and low-tech and study the approach that best justifies the wage gap, for the period between 2007 and 2014. The results point out that the SBTC approach is the main explanation to the formation the wage gap between the labour force with tertiary education (skilled) and with secondary and primary education (unskilled).  相似文献

The rebound effect refers to the phenomenon that energy savings from improvements in energy efficiency are lower than expected due to unintended second-order effects. Grasping specific mechanisms related to the rebound effect requires a good understanding of interactions between heterogonous agents on multiple markets. Otherwise, policies aimed at reducing energy use may render counter-expected and unforeseen consequences. In this paper, we propose a formal model, where technological change results from interactions on two markets: between consumers and producers in the market for final goods, and heterogeneous power plants in the electricity market. The analysis provides insights to the role of technological change, supply–demand coevolution, and status-driven consumption in explaining the rebound effect. The model is employed to compare effectiveness of economic policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions associated with production of consumer goods, namely: a tax on electricity and ‘nuclear obligations’ to produce ten percent of electricity from nuclear energy.  相似文献

Since the beginning of the transition process, Hungary has attracted a significant amount of foreign direct investment (FDI), although this is unevenly distributed among the twenty Hungarian counties. This paper examines the determinants of FDI at a regional level in Hungary and more particularly assesses the importance of agglomeration effects among determinants. A panel model of the location determinants of FDI in Hungary is developed and estimated. Empirical testing suggests that counties with higher labour availability, greater industrial demand and higher manufacturing density attract more FDI. Surprisingly, higher unit labour costs attract FDI. In addition, inter‐industrial agglomeration economies and infrastructure availability are found to be important.  相似文献

This article presents the methodology and results for measuring the knowledge intensity of manufacturing industries based on the knowledge-related characteristics of their workforce. The measures link information from the Occupational Information Network project (from the US Department of Labor) and the Occupational Employment Statistics (from the Bureau of Labor Statistics) to produce industry-specific knowledge intensity measures. The new measures overcome the main issues posed by the industry-average R&D share in total sales variable, often used as a proxy for knowledge intensity in the literature.  相似文献

This paper presents estimates of rates of total factor productivity (TFP) growth for two-digit manufacturing industries in Turkey over the period 1963 to 1976. Estimates are presented separately for the public and private enterprises in each industry. It is shown that periods of slower productivity growth coincided with periods of a more stringent traderegime. It is also shown that, despite the fact that the rate of growth of TFP was about the same in the public and private sectors, absolute levels of inputs in the public sector enterprises are much higher than in their private sector counterparts.  相似文献

What drives the productivity dynamics of infrastructure companies? Using a panel of firms in 14 countries, we study total factor productivity (TFP) enhancers of utility and network services companies. We find that moving TFP closer to the technological frontier drives productivity growth at higher speeds in Asian countries than in European countries. We also find that financial leverage exerts a positive effect on TFP growth for larger infrastructure firms and that more financially developed countries utilize economies of scale through better use of financial resources. Large utility and transportation companies display a higher rate of TFP growth, indicating that a competition policy to encourage M&As would be prudent for the utility/transportation sectors to maximize economies of scale. In contrast, we find diseconomies of scale for energy companies in some countries. Moreover, young network firms improve TFP growth faster than their peers in countries with fewer product market regulations. Therefore, policies should remove entry barriers while facilitating the departure of old and low-productivity firms from network markets. Finally, policymakers should offer well-targeted fiscal incentives for intangible investments to boost TFP because the accumulation of intangible assets such as digital technology promotes more scale economies through network effects.  相似文献

This paper attempts to provide empirical evidence on issues concerning: (a) the effect of the stringency of environmental regulations (as measured by pollution control expenditures) on innovative activity (as measured by R&D expenditures) and on the average age of capital stock and (b) the productivity enhancement effect of environmental regulations in Japanese manufacturing industries. The empirical findings in the paper show that the pollution control expenditures have a positive relationship with the R&D expenditures and have a negative relationship with the average age of capital stock. It is also shown that increases in R&D investment stimulated by the regulatory stringency have a significant positive effect on the growth rate of total factor productivity.  相似文献

This paper investigates the level of market power in the Greek manufacturing and services industry over the period 1970–2007. Based on the Roeger methodology, we investigate the competitive conditions in the examined industries at a disaggregated level (two and three digit ISIC codes). The empirical results indicate that the Greek manufacturing and services industries operate in non-competitive conditions. Moreover, average mark-up ratios are heterogeneous across sectors, with manufacturing having higher mark ups on average than services. In contrast to other related studies, we provide sufficient evidence about the movements of mark-up ratios over time. According to our findings, the mark-up ratios in the manufacturing sectors are, on average, higher in the post European Union (EU) accession period (1982–1992), as a result of the merger wave in the manufacturing industry. However, this upward trend stopped within the period (1993–2007), and the relevant ratios have decreased substantially. The econometric results are quite robust when the Two Stage Least Squares (2SLS) and the bootstrap method are applied. Lastly, the results of our analysis have a number of interesting implications for policy makers and government officials in light of the recent financial crisis that hit Greece.  相似文献

Efficient development of industries requires a broad range of technological capabilities which can be acquired only by a long process of learning. Continuous measuring and monitoring of the ever-changing technological learning would be useful for building technological capability and managing technological policies. Nevertheless, research on how to measure the technological learning over time at macro levels remains largely untouched. In this paper, by adding the experience curve into the multifactor productivity part of Neoclassical production function, we will develop a model which will allow one to estimate the technological learning levels over long periods. This model would allow a user to both estimate the past learning experiences and forecast its future path on a time varying basis. The model has been used and tested in the estimation of the annual technological learning values for 28 Turkish manufacturing industries from 1981 to 2000.  相似文献

The whole issue of the appropriate balance in dividing economic activities between the state and the market has, in recent years, received considerable attention. The proponents of ‘goverment intervention’ argue that government have to take a leading role in accelerating the structural change with is perceived as necessary towards achieving an efficient allocation of resources leading to a higher economic growth. Consequently, government have to rely on various policy measures which aim at reducing, if not completely erasing,the malfunctioning of the market. Here it is not the number of policies or regulations that matters. What is more important is the potential of each policy towards eliminating market imperfections. In this context, the crucial issue is the need for a direct measure to gauge the impact of each policy on selected problems which tend to contribute to the malfunctioning of the market. The objective of this paper is to suggest a method to measure the effect of government policies on reducing market concentration which is perceived as one of the sources of market failure. The applicability of the suggested methodology has been examined with a data set from the Malaysian Manufacturing Industries.  相似文献

Employing the micro data for 1997–2004, we investigate the location decision of Korean-affiliated manufacturing investments in the United States. The conditional logit estimates confirm that although industry-specific Korean agglomeration and domestic agglomeration play an important role, the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) location is more sensitively affected by the interstate difference in endowment conditions than by the same nationality agglomeration. Both business service and intermediate good agglomeration are main determinants of FDI location. Furthermore, estimation results show substantial change in the location pattern after recovery from the Asian financial crisis. We find quite different patterns of location decision across industry groups; dispersion forces work greater than the agglomeration force in the consumer goods industry, forward linkages with US upstream firms can be seen in the assembly and processing industry, and typical follow-the-leader pattern mixed with market potential effect by Korean immigrants is seen in the basic material manufacturing industry.  相似文献

Using R&D-based models of economic growth as a foundation, this paper argues that market-driven knowledge creation is necessarily linked as an engine of productivity growth to economies of scale and market-power. A cost function and factor demand model is applied to a cross-country industry data set to study market-power, economies of scale and the role of knowledge in an integrated approach. Empirical results reveal the presence of market-power and economies of scale in all of the industries investigated. R&D and spillovers explain some of the productivity growth observed. Spillovers are identified as an external source of economies of scale.  相似文献

Productive externalities are significant determinants of agglomeration, not deeply studied at the industry and international level. We analyse the impact on productivity growth of technological externalities, both inter- and intraindustry, national or international, at the industry level for the EU countries and the period 1995–2002. The results confirm the advisability of considering international externalities when countries are taken as regions, whose omission underestimates national spillovers. Together with national endowments and a central geographical position, the growth of productivity is encouraged by national and international specialization as a general result; moreover, it is fuelled by stronger interindustry spillovers and productive diversification, a result more evident for high technology industries, while lower technology industries are more sensitive to the omission of international externalities. Economic integration seems to be relevant, because supranational regions with less friction for goods and factor movements are more likely to take advantage of external economies as a mechanism of productivity growth and agglomeration.  相似文献

This paper explores the causes of inter-temporal variations in factor intensities and total factor productivity (TFP) in Canadian industries. For this purpose, we estimated translog cost function at the sector level allowing for non-homotheticity and non-neutral technical progress. Our empirical results suggest that about 15 to 20 per cent of the post-1973 slowdown in TFP is due to the inter-industry shifts in factor inputs. The remaining productivity slowdown could be attributed to the world wide slowdown in aggregate demand (lower capacity utilization rates) and the substantial increase in the relative price of energy and raw materials.  相似文献
