When a consumer is familiar with one product but not its competitor, she is faced with a decision: either buy what she knows, or engage in search to learn more. When search is costly, competing firms may attempt to encourage or discourage search by adjusting prices. In this paper we consider how competitive dynamics between two quality differentiated firms are affected if one product enjoys a familiarity advantage. Familiarity is defined as a consumer’s ex-ante knowledge of fit for a particular product. An increase in the level of familiarity for one product allows a firm to charge higher prices since there are more consumers with information on that product relative to the competition. We call this the direct effect of familiarity. However, an increase in familiarity also has an indirect effect, since it gives the rival firm a stronger incentive to decrease price in order to encourage searching, in turn increasing overall competition. The effect of familiarity on profits depends on the magnitudes of these effects, and it is moderated by the level of quality differentiation between products. For very high or very low levels of differentiation, the results are relatively straightforward. However, when the level of differentiation is moderate, the results are more nuanced, with the higher-quality firm realizing higher profits from more familiarity, even if it must lower prices due to the indirect effect. We also find that, contrary to conventional wisdom, overall competition may be higher when firms are more quality differentiated. This is driven by the fact that higher quality differences bolster the indirect effect, with a lower quality firm providing deeper price cuts to counter increased familiarity of a high quality rival. We conclude by examining how changes in the cost of searching impact equilibrium outcomes. 相似文献

Effects of interpersonal anxiety on consumer information processing were investigated from a psychoanalytic perspective. Findings indicate that increases in the number and importance of others in subjects' decision environments heighten experienced levels of anxiety. In addition, the relationship of anxiety to information processing was found to be curvilinear (inverted U-shaped) as indicated by the total amount of information and the processing mode selected by subjects during a decision task. Worldwide premium private labels (PPLs) are a new and rapidly growing phenomenon. However to date, little is known about consumers' perceptions of these newer entrants relative to other brand types. Therefore it is difficult for marketers to understand the opportunities and threats created by this new generation of brands. This study examines the ways in which consumers categorise PPLs compared to more traditional value private labels (VPLs) and national brands (NBs) on the three dimensions of quality, value for money and trust. The data includes seven packaged goods categories in three countries, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The findings show that PPLs sit on a separate island, in between VPLs and NBs in consumer memory. While consumers generally view PPLs as a separate subgroup of brands, PPL are connected to other subgroups in that they are perceived to have the value characteristics of VPLs but quality characteristics of NBs. Finally, consumers with past experience with VPLs have a stronger ability to categorise PLs into distinct brand tiers. 相似文献

This paper estimates the impact of social media conversations on consumer valuation of brand characteristics and demand for carbonated soft drinks (CSDs). We formulate a random coefficient, discrete choice model of consumer demand that includes social media conversations, and estimate it matching Nielsen sales data on carbonated soft drinks to social media conversations on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Empirical results indicate that consumers’ conversations about brands and nutritional aspects of CSDs have a significant impact on their valuation of brand characteristics and ultimately on their choices of CSDs. These findings have important implications not only for firms using social media as a strategic tool for effective brand promotion and product design but also for public health policies aimed at reducing the consumption of sugary beverages and high-calorie foods. 相似文献

Previous research has shown that consumer intentions to adopt innovations are often poor predictors of adoption behavior. An important reason for this may be that the evaluative criteria consumers use in both stages of the adoption process weigh differently. Using construal level theory, we develop expectations on the influence of innovation characteristics across the intention and behavior stages of the adoption process. Using meta-analysis, we derive generalizations on drivers of intentions and actual innovation adoption behavior. The results show important differences across both stages. Consumers show higher levels of adoption intention for innovations that are more complex, better match their needs, and involve lower uncertainty. However, consumers are found to actually adopt innovations with less complexity and higher relative advantages. Adopter demographics are found to explain little variance in adoption intention and behavior, whereas adopter psychographics are found to be influential in both stages. These findings have implications for innovation adoption theory, for managers involved in new product and service marketing, and for future research on innovation adoption. 相似文献

This study examined the impact of membership fees on consumer attitude and purchase behavior. Subjects participated in a computerized simulated shopping experiment, and chose between three competing videotape rental stores, receiving feedback about purchase utility on each occasion. Manipulations included the presence or absence of an initial membership-fee requirement at the dominant store and the timing of a lowering of that store's utility to the same level as that offered by a competing establishment. Store loyalty is shown to vary as a function of membership fees and utility changes in a manner consistent with hypotheses generated from prospect, escalation-of-commitment, cognitive-dissonance, and self-perception theories. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献

Sexuality has not been investigated by marketers and consumer researchers in terms of the constructs and theories developed by sex researchers. This article takes a first step in applying their approaches by investigating in an empirical study the consumer lovemap, an aspect of the more general lovemap. It focuses, in particular, on two aspects of the consumer lovemap in relation to product use, namely, the Consumer Sexual Behavior Sequence, which is a model of sexual stages, and product sexualization. In addition, it assesses the individual difference effects of the trait of erotophobia-erotophilia and of one's own sex. The results indicate that the newly introduced approaches helped to explain consumers' perceptions of the use of various products. Recent research underlines the important influence on consumer behavior of the mere presence of consumers on other consumers in retail businesses. While these results mainly relate to overall behavior, it is largely unknown how consumers behave in stores and how they react to customers present around them. This study examines the impact of an encounter between two consumers, directly in front of the same shelf row, on diverse consumer behavior. By means of two pilot studies we gained initial insights into the mutual influence. An image-based scenario study shows that the proximal distance is important for consumers' emotional state. In addition, the results indicate that these triggered negative and positive emotions mediate the effects of the distance on shopping satisfaction, aversive behavioral tendencies, willingness to buy, and number of alternatives considered. 相似文献

This paper argues that what we do not want to consume is often as personally and socially important as what we desire. Are desire and distaste really two separate bodies of knowledge; do we keep separate mental lists of good and bad, of things to be sought out and things to be avoided? Or are the positive and negative aspects of goods always intimately related to each other, so that we learn a series of relationships between desire and disgust, or desired and detested objects? This inquiry was prompted by a long term study of consumption in the Central American country of Belize. Survey data show that distastes, aversions, and dislikes are much more socially diagnostic than positive desires. I argue that dislikes and distastes are not the mirror images of tastes and desire, but instead provide very different ways for people to express identity and difference, to create senses of self, space, and personal and social time. 相似文献

Although loyalty programs can help divert costs to the future by using delayed rewards, unredeemed program currency can become significant liability for the firm. To alleviate this concern, many programs have introduced a point expiration date or have shortened their expiration time horizon. This issue of point expiration has received scant attention in the literature. Contrary to an intuitive negative effect one would expect from a more stringent expiration policy, our real-life data and lab experiment demonstrated that a finite expiration policy can affect purchases positively but only for consumers who have the flexibility to adapt their behavior to such a policy. We identified usage level and engagement in multi-store shopping as two sources contributing to flexibility. Overall, our findings point to a need to understand one’s customer base to design the optimal point expiration policy and program communication. 相似文献

This article presents a large-scale cross-sectional field study of the effect of store environment on consumer emotions and the resulting influence on aspects of consumer behavior with actual shopping behavior used as an example. Cast into a stimulus–organism–response framework, the results suggest that a consumer's emotions can be a mediating factor in the purchase process. In this study, we identify and explore how store environment and emotional states may influence various dimensions of purchase behavior. This research confirms that although cognitive factors may largely account for store selection and for most planned purchases within the store, the environment in the store and the emotional state of consumers may be important determinants of purchase behavior. This research has many pragmatic applications, because pleasure was associated with the amount of money spent and affinity for the store, whereas arousal was associated with money spent in the store, time spent in the store, and the number of items purchased in the store. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献

This paper investigates the importance of transport costs in new venture internationalisation, i.e. of firms that start exporting
before they are 3 years of age. It does so by merging two large international datasets, on the firm level (covering 49,584
firms) as well as on the country level (covering 154 countries). It is found that transport costs matter significantly for
new venture internationalisation, for older firms’ decision to export, as well as the extent of the latter’s subsequent exports.
Export costs, the quality of transport infrastructure and domestic logistics costs affect new venture internationalisation
even when controlling for a range of standard determinants. New international ventures behave differently from older firms
in two important ways: (1) Transport costs affect the probability that they will export but not the extent of their subsequent
exports and (2) their probability of exporting is affected negatively by their networking, domestic success and ISO status,
whilst in the case of older firms, these factors have a positive impact. Various recommendations for policy and further research

The paper, “A socio-cognitive approach to exploring consumer boycott intelligence,” effectively explores issues surrounding the boycott behavior of Muslim and Christian consumers in Lebanon. This commentary is to promote further development of the research domain, both the specific topic of this paper as well as wider issues of boycott behavior, by considering the limitations and discourse of the adopted methodology, the positioning of the paper within the extant literature, and future development of methodology. This commentary considers several frameworks and research traditions identifying a need for a longitudinal research strategy of which Farah and Newman [Farah, MF, Newman, AJ. A socio-cognitive approach to exploring consumer boycott intelligence. J Bus Res 2009-this issue.] is only one part within a particular situation and context. Retail performance is driven in part by a retailer's ability to not only develop knowledge resources, but also convert these resources into the dynamic capability of market responsiveness. The results of this study add to the growing literature on dynamic capabilities by showing that the management orientation of entrepreneurial proclivity not only aids in the accumulation of knowledge resources, but can aid (as well as hinder) the conversion of these resources into dynamic capabilities. Specifically, we show that the management orientation of entrepreneurial proclivity increases the accumulation of knowledge resources, in addition to enhancing the conversion of one knowledge resource (knowledge of suppliers) in the capability of market responsiveness. However, this same management orientation also diminishes the conversion of another knowledge resource (knowledge of regulatory agencies). The purpose of this paper is to examine trade policy changes in OECD countries in the past decade and the impact of such changes on producers and consumers. Consideration is given to trade policy objectives as well as the impact of trade policies on foreign suppliers and domestic export industries in evaluating the potential benefits from protection. The results indicate that trade protection imposes high costs on the consumer and the domestic economy. The costs include higher prices, the reduction in consumer choice, and the decline in a competitive environment for domestic industries. In many instances trade protection means that consumers subsidize both domestic and foreign producers. In contrast trade protection faces severe limitations in achieving its twin objectives of job preservations and industry modernization due to supplier response in domestic and foreign countries.

Ziel dieses Beitrages ist es, den Wandel der Handelspolitik der OECD-Länder und seine Auswirkungen auf Produzenten und Konsumenten genauer zu untersuchen.Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, daß Handelsbeschränkungen hohe Kosten sowohl für die Konsumenten als auch für die heimische Industrie bewirken — und zwar vor allem durch höhere Verbraucherpreise, durch eine Verringerung der Wahlmöglichkeiten für Verbraucher und durch fehlende Wettbewerbs-Anreize für die heimische Industrie zu modernisierenden und innovativen Maßnahmen. In vielen Fällen wirken Handelsbeschränkungen ausgesprochen rückschrittlich und treffen die einkommensschwachen Konsumenten am stärksten.Auch ihr eigentliches Doppelziel, die Erhaltung von Arbeitsplätzen und die Förderung der Industrie-Modernisierung, kann die Politik von Handelsbeschränkungen nur sehr begrenzt erreichen. Beschäftigungszuwächsen in einem Bereich stehen oft Beschäftigungsverluste in anderen, vor allem exportabhängigen, Bereichen gegenüber. Ohnehin hat die allgemeine wirtschaftliche Lage in der Regel einen stärkeren Einfluß auf die heimische Beschäftigung als Handelsbeschränkungen.Die Ausweitung von Handelsbeschränkungen in den letzten Jahren bestätigt, daß in der Handelspolitik die Interessen der Produzenten und Arbeitnehmer dominieren, und sollte die wichtige Rolle der Verbrauchererziehung hervorheben. Konsumenten müssen darüber informiert sein, daß sie als Folge von Handelsbeschränkungen in der bestehenden Form nicht nur einheimische sondern auch ausländische Produzenten subventionieren.

A critical and notoriously elusive issue in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) research is the impact of Corporate Social Performance (CSP) on the bottom line. Instead of looking for direct correlations between social and financial performance, we hypothesize that the first result of CSR activities is the creation of trust among the stakeholders. A survey conducted on consumers of organic products provided support for our hypothesis, showing that CSP influences consumer trust and that that trust in turn influences consumers' subsequent actions. The findings further suggest that intermediate variables between CSP and Corporate Financial Performance (CFP) may best support a business case for CSR. 相似文献
