In the paper the problem of optimum experimental design for estimating parameters of multivariate regression functions is considered. We address the question: under what conditions one can compose the optimal design from partial designs, obtained by considering partial regressions, which depend on reduced number of variables. After reinterpreting and reviewing briefly existing results we provide some new conditions.  相似文献

Optimal designs under a survival analysis framework have been rarely considered in the literature. In this paper, an optimal design theory is developed for the typical Cox regression problem. Failure time is modeled according to a probability distribution depending on some explanatory variables through a linear model. At the end of the study, some units will not have failed and thus their time records will be censored. In order to deal with this problem from an experimental design point of view it will be necessary to assume a probability distribution for the time an experimental unit enters the study. Then an optimal conditional design will be computed at the beginning of the study for any possible given time. Thus, every time a new unit enters the study, there is an experimental design to be determined. A particular and simple case is used throughout the paper in order to illustrate the procedure.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the problem of estimating a selected set of contrasts between v treatments using a block design consisting of b blocks of size k. Traditionally, the construction of A-optimal block designs for such situations has been carried out assuming a fixed effects model. In this paper, we show that A-optimal designs constructed under a fixed effects model are robust in the sense that these designs have maximal minimal efficiency when considered among all available designs and under all possible mixed effects models. In his book Pukelsheim [8] pointed out that designs supported at the arcsin points are very efficient for the statistical inference in a polynomial regression model. In this note we determine the canonical moments of a class of distributions which have nearly equal weights at the arcsin points. The class contains theD-optimal arcsin support design and theD 1-optimal design for a polynomial regression. The results allow explicit representations ofD-, andD 1-efficiencies of these designs in all polynomial models with a degree less than the number of support points of the design.  相似文献

E-optimality of approximate designs in linear regression models is paired with a dual problem of nonlinear Chebyshev approximation. When the regression functions form a totally positive system, then the information matrices of designs for subparameters turn out to be “almost” totally positive, a property which allows to solve the nonlinear Chebyshev problem. Thereby we obtain explicit formulae for E-optimal designs in terms of equi-oscillating generalized polynomials. The considerations unify and generalize known results on E-optimality for particular regression setups.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the exact D-optimal designs for estimation of the unknown parameters in the two factors, each at only two-level, main effects model with autocorrelated errors. The vector of the n random errors in the observed responses is assumed to follow a first-order autoregressive model (AR(1)). The exact D-optimal designs seek the optimal combinations of the design levels as well as the optimal run orders, so that the determinant of the information matrix of BLUEs for the unknown parameters is maximized. Bora-Senta and Moyssiadis (1999) gave some conjectures about the exact D-optimal designs based on their experience of several exhaustive searches. In this paper their conjectures are partially proved to be true.Received: January 2003 / Accepted: October 2003Partially supported by the National Science Council of Taiwan, R.O.C. under grant NSC 91-2115-M-008-013.Supported in part by the National Science Council of Taiwan, R.O.C. under grant NSC 89-2118-M-110-003.  相似文献

Summary A special application of the truncation problem is presented in connection with constructing a model for the analysis of the fine aerosol spray particle size distribution sampled by an impact method. The relationship between the diameter distribution of images recorded on a photograph and the actual spherical particle diameter distribution is analyzed. The problem of estimating the parameters of the actual diameter distribution using the induced information is transformed to estimating the parameters of a truncated distribution with known or unknown truncation point. The derived general solution is implemented to two specified particle size distributions.  相似文献

With cointegration tests often being oversized under time‐varying error variance, it is possible, if not likely, to confuse error variance non‐stationarity with cointegration. This paper takes an instrumental variable (IV) approach to establish individual‐unit test statistics for no cointegration that are robust to variance non‐stationarity. The sign of a fitted departure from long‐run equilibrium is used as an instrument when estimating an error‐correction model. The resulting IV‐based test is shown to follow a chi‐square limiting null distribution irrespective of the variance pattern of the data‐generating process. In spite of this, the test proposed here has, unlike previous work relying on instrumental variables, competitive local power against sequences of local alternatives in 1/T‐neighbourhoods of the null. The standard limiting null distribution motivates, using the single‐unit tests in a multiple testing approach for cointegration in multi‐country data sets by combining P‐values from individual units. Simulations suggest good performance of the single‐unit and multiple testing procedures under various plausible designs of cross‐sectional correlation and cross‐unit cointegration in the data. An application to the equilibrium relationship between short‐ and long‐term interest rates illustrates the dramatic differences between results of robust and non‐robust tests.  相似文献

We consider the problem of estimating input parameters for a differential equation model, given experimental observations of the output. As time and cost limit both the number and quality of observations, the design is critical. A generalized notion of leverage is derived and, with this, we define directional leverage. Effective designs are argued to be those that sample in regions of high directional leverage. We present an algorithm for finding optimal designs and then establish relationships to existing design optimality criteria. Numerical examples demonstrating the performance of the algorithm are presented.  相似文献

This paper investigates the robustness of variance-balanced row-column designs for complete diallel cross experiments for estimating the comparisons among the general combining ability parameters against the loss of observations. A necessary and sufficient condition of robustness as per connectedness criterion is obtained. The robustness of optimal row-column designs of Gupta and Choi (1998) has been investigated for the loss of any m(≥1) observations in a column and for the loss of any two observations in the design. The study of robustness has also been conducted as per A-efficiency criterion.  相似文献

Consider the problem of discriminating between two rival response surface models and estimating parameters in the identified model. To construct designs serving for both model discrimination and parameter estimation, the M γ-optimality criterion, which puts weight γ (0≤γ≤1) for model discrimination and 1 − γ for parameter estimation, is adopted. The corresponding M γ-optimal product design is explicitly derived in terms of canonical moments. With the application of the maximin principle on the M γ-efficiency of any M γ'-optimal product design, a criterion-robust optimal product design is proposed.  相似文献

In this paper, we are presenting general classes of factor screening designs for identifying a few important factors from a list of m (≥ 3) factors each at three levels. A design is a subset of 3m possible runs. The problem of finding designs with small number of runs is considered here. A main effect plan requires at least (2m + 1) runs for estimating the general mean, linear and quadratic effects of m factors. An orthogonal main effect plan requires, in addition, the number of runs as a multiple of 9. For example, when m=5, a main effect plan requires at least 11 runs and an orthogonal main effect plan requires 18 runs. Two general factor screening designs presented here are nonorthogonal designs with (2m− 1) runs. These designs, called search designs permit us to search for and identify at most two important factors out of m factors under the search linear model introduced in Srivastava (1975). For example, when m=5, the two new plans given in this paper have 9 runs, which is a significant improvement over an orthogonal main effect plan with 18 runs in terms of the number of runs and an improvement over a main effect plan with at least 11 runs. We compare these designs, for 4≤m≤ 10, using arithmetic and geometric means of the determinants, traces, and maximum characteristic roots of certain matrices. Two designs D1 and D2 are identical for m=3 and this design is an optimal design in the class of all search designs under the six criteria discussed above. Designs D1 and D2 are also identical for m=4 under some row and column permutations. Consequently, D1 and D2 are equally good for searching and identifying one important factor out of m factors when m=4. The design D1 is marginally better than the design D2 for searching and identifying one important factor out of m factors when m=5, … , 10. The design D1 is marginally better than the D2 for searching and identifying two important factors out of m factors when m=5, 7, 9. The design D2 is somewhat better than the design D1 for m=6, 8. For m=10, D1 is marginally better than D2 w.r.t. the geometric mean and D2 is marginally better than D1 w.r.t. the arithmetic mean of the maximum characteristic roots.  相似文献

The most common form of data for socio-economic studies comes from survey sampling. Often the designs of such surveys are complex and use stratification as a method for selecting sample units. A parametric regression model is widely employed for the analysis of such survey data. However the use of a parametric model to represent the relationship between the variables can be inappropriate. A natural alternative is to adopt a nonparametric approach. In this article we address the problem of estimating the finite population mean under stratified sampling. A new stratified estimator based on nonparametric regression is proposed for stratification with proportional allocation, optimum allocation and post-stratification. We focus on an educational and labor-related context with natural populations to test the proposed nonparametric method. Simulated populations have also been considered to evaluate the practical performance of the proposed method.  相似文献

This paper uses semidefinite programming (SDP) to construct Bayesian optimal design for nonlinear regression models. The setup here extends the formulation of the optimal designs problem as an SDP problem from linear to nonlinear models. Gaussian quadrature formulas (GQF) are used to compute the expectation in the Bayesian design criterion, such as D‐, A‐ or E‐optimality. As an illustrative example, we demonstrate the approach using the power‐logistic model and compare results in the literature. Additionally, we investigate how the optimal design is impacted by different discretising schemes for the design space, different amounts of uncertainty in the parameter values, different choices of GQF and different prior distributions for the vector of model parameters, including normal priors with and without correlated components. Further applications to find Bayesian D‐optimal designs with two regressors for a logistic model and a two‐variable generalised linear model with a gamma distributed response are discussed, and some limitations of our approach are noted.  相似文献

This article presents discussions on the optimal and robust designs for trigonometric regression models under different optimality criteria. First, we investigate the classical Q-optimal designs for estimating the response function in a full trigonometric regression model with a given order. The equivalencies of Q-, A-, and G-optimal designs for trigonometric regression in general are also articulated. Second, we study minimax designs and their implementation in the case of trigonometric approximation under Q-, A-, and D-optimality. Then, We indicate the existence of the symmetric designs that are D-optimal minimax designs for general trigonometric regression models, and prove the existence of the symmetric designs that are Q- or A-optimal minimax designs for two particular trigonometric regression models under certain conditions.  相似文献

Consider the design problem for the approximately linear model with serially correlated errors. The correlated structure is the qth degree moving average process, MA(q), especially for q = 1, 2. The optimal design is derived by using Bayesian approach. The Bayesian designs derived with various priors are compared with the classical designs with respect to some specific correlated structures. The results show that any prior knowledge about the sign of the MA(q) process parameters leads to designs that are considerately more efficient than the classical ones based on homoscedastic assumptions.  相似文献

Consider the standard linear model Y=X θ + ε. If the parameter of interest is a full rank subsystem K′θ of mean parameters, the associated information matrix can be defined via an extremal representation. For rank deficient subsystems, Pukelsheim (1993) introduced the notion of generalized information matrices that inherit many properties of the information matrices. However, this notion is not a direct extension of the full rank case in the sense that the definition of the generalized information matrix applied to full rank subsystems does not lead to the usual information matrix. In this paper, we propose a definition of the information matrix via an extremal representation that encompasses the full rank and the non-full rank cases. We also study its properties and show its links with the generalized information matrices.  相似文献

We study the consistency of parameter estimators in adaptive designs generated by a one-step ahead D-optimal algorithm. We show that when the design space is finite, under mild conditions the least-squares estimator in a nonlinear regression model is strongly consistent and the information matrix evaluated at the current estimated value of the parameters strongly converges to the D-optimal matrix for the unknown true value of the parameters. A similar property is shown to hold for maximum-likelihood estimation in Bernoulli trials (dose–response experiments). Some examples are presented.  相似文献

We describe a method for estimating the marginal likelihood, based on Chib (1995) and C hib and Jeliazkov (2001) , when simulation from the posterior distribution of the model parameters is by the accept–reject Metropolis–Hastings (ARMH) algorithm. The method is developed for one-block and multiple-block ARMH algorithms and does not require the (typically) unknown normalizing constant of the proposal density. The problem of calculating the numerical standard error of the estimates is also considered and a procedure based on batch means is developed. Two examples, dealing with a multinomial logit model and a Gaussian regression model with non-conjugate priors, are provided to illustrate the efficiency and applicability of the method.  相似文献

Characterization and construction of optimal designs using the familiar optimality criteria, for example A-, D- and E-optimality are well studied in the literature. However the study of the Distance Optimality (DS-) criterion introduced by Sinha (1970) has very recently drawn attention of researchers. In the present article, we consider the singularly estimable full rank problem of estimating the full set of elementary treatment contrasts using the DS optimality criterion in the set up of a one way ANOVA model. Using a limit argument it turns out that a CRD in which difference between any two allocation numbers is at the most unity is uniquely DS-optimal. Acknowledgement. We are thankful to Prof. B. K. Sinha for suggesting the problem to us and many helpful discussions with him. We are also thankful to the referees for drawing our attention to the reference of Bischoff (1995) and many helpful comments.  相似文献
