Managerial Sensemaking and Occupational Identities in Britain and Italy: The Role of Management Magazines in the Process of Discursive Construction

Processes of discursive construction in a British and an Italian personnel management magazine are analysed to show the ways in which the magazines, both as genre forms and providers of narratives and discursive resources, provide ‘story boards’ for their readers which are helpful to them when it comes to making sense of the tensions and dilemmas associated with their managerial roles. Tensions and occupational dilemmas generally associated with personnel management work are identified and variations found in the discursive constructions associated with the two magazines are related, with reservations, to cultural and institutional differences between British and Italian human resource management

碳补偿机制在中国构建低碳城市进程中有积极的意义。首先,本文介绍了何为碳补偿,并以北京市零碳车贴为例,运用博弈论以及图像分析法对碳补偿机制进行了简要分析,其次,本文运用SWOT分析法分析了碳补偿机制的优劣势。最后,本文提出了几点建议来更好地促进碳补偿机制的实施推广。碳补偿具有其特点并且在近年来越来越受到欢迎,本文重点即认识碳补偿,了解碳补偿,以达到建立合理的碳补偿机制的目的。     

员工角色压力对工作满意感的影响:组织氛围的调节效应

本文作者对52个旅游企业121个部门1594名员工进行了一次实证研究.多层次线性模型分析结果表明,员工的角色模糊对工作满意感有显著的负向影响,部门的支持型领导氛围部分中介了企业的支持型领导氛围对员工工作满意感的正向影响,员工的心理受权部分中介了部门的心理受权氛围对员工工作满意感的正向影响.此外,企业的支持型领导氛围既会调节部门的心理受权氛围对员工工作满意感的影响,又会调节员工的角色模糊对员工工作满意感的影响,企业的员工服务行为评估氛围则会调节员工的角色冲突对他们的工作满意感的影响.     

Economic Democracy: The Role of Privilege in Advancing Civilization

What characterizes the progress of civilization? We propose that it can be understood as expanding democratic principles in governance and economic affairs. In both cases, progress involves advance followed by retreat. Advances come from democratizing and de‐concentrating privileges. This counterbalances the opposing tendency towards monopolization. A two‐by‐two typology of privilege identifies four distinct categories: formal (state sanctioned) vs. informal (culture‐based) privileges on one axis, and efficient vs. inefficient privileges on the other. This matrix leads to a set of propositions that, taken together, should aid in understanding how to advance economic democracy and hinder concentration of economic power: 1) remove inefficient, formal privileges, 2) collect economic rents from efficient, formal privileges, and 3) recognize sovereign rights of individuals in economic activity (which leads to removing taxes on labor and savings). We define our core terms, provide examples to illustrate meaning, provide historic examples to illustrate the feasibility of our analysis, and analyze the dynamic implications of putting our propositions into action.     

The Commissioning Process in the NHS: The theory and application

The concept of ‘capacity building’ is explored, through illustration and critique of the concept's development in the international, national and local community literature. Theoretical strands where the concept belongs partially include community development theory, agency theory and stewardship theory. The concept is examined in the context of new public management thinking, and its discovery by professionals to enhance their community roles is highlighted. Findings from micro-level case study research among local community organizations are reported, suggesting organizational scepticism about its meaning and outcomes, and producing a preliminary typology of organizations' responses to the concept. The article concludes that the concept appears theoretically homeless. It emphasizes the need for clarification of the concept's multiple meanings, so that the chances of useful evaluation of publicly funded capacity building programmes may be enhanced.     

Enterprise Education: The Role of Head Teachers

In the UK there have been recent policy developments in enterprise education, following the Davies Report (2002). In Scotland there has been the launch of a comprehensive enterprise education programme, the Determined to Succeed Strategy (Scottish Executive, 2003) for all schools in Scotland. This Strategy represented the Executive’s response to a working party review of education and enterprise. The review, Determined to Succeed, 2002 represented a comprehensive overview of requirements in order to provide enterprise education in all schools in Scotland. The aim stated is to “take an innovative and experimental approach in developing key themes in the initiative around the professional development of teachers, the engagement of disengaged school students and the promotion of a focused and resource-intensive approach to Enterprise in Education” (Scottish Executive, 2004). This paper reviews developments in enterprise education and the role of Head Teachers and Deputy Head Teachers (school principals and vice-principals). It reports the findings from research conducted with a Leadership Academy, delivered by the Columba 1400 organisation, with Head and Deputy Head Teachers for the Scottish Executive and assesses their critical role in enterprise education.     

Say-on-Pay Votes: The Role of the Media

Abstract

We investigate the association between the media coverage of firms’ CEO pay packages and subsequent shareholder voting on say-on-pay resolutions, and find that negative media coverage is able to predict shareholder discontent over say on pay. When we divide media coverage into coverage in the financial and business press versus coverage in the general press, we find that shareholder voting on say-on-pay resolutions is mainly associated with the articles from the financial and business press. This suggests that the media cannot be considered a homogeneous information source that is equally able to predict shareholders’ voting behaviors. As such, our findings have important implications for studies on the role of the media in corporate governance.

高等职业教育是我国高等教育的有机组成部分,政府在发展高等职业教育培训中拥有无可争议的地位,但政府能否对自己的角色加以理性定位却事关高职教育的健康发展。依据中国的具体国情,本文提出政府在高职教育发展中应该扮演催化剂、支持者、激励者和调控者的理性角色。     

导师在提高研究生培养质量过程中的作用定位研究

我国研究生培养实行的是＂导师负责制＂,导师是研究生培养的第一负责人,在研究生培养质量中起着十分重要的作用。文中通过理论的运用,结合对江西某大学进行实证调查阐述了导师在提高研究生培养质量的过程中,从成人、成才、成业三个方面出发,起了示范、主导以及引领的作用并通过调查分析出导师在指导学生过程中存在的问题。     

Corporate Political Activities and the SEC's Oversight Role in the IPO Process

We study how a regulator (Securities and Exchanges Commission; SEC) responds to IPOs that have a higher political profile. We find that IPOs with issuers (intermediaries) that actively pursue political strategies receive more (less) SEC comment letters than IPOs without such actors. Cross-sectional analysis reveals that the IPO's political environment moderates the relationship between social pressure for more corporate transparency and SEC scrutiny. Additional tests indicate that the political activities of issuers (intermediaries) contribute to a less (more) efficient IPO process. Overall, our findings suggest that politically active intermediaries have stronger incentives to accurately portray the IPO financial reporting environment than politically active issuers because they have greater reputational and political capital at stake; quite simply, the former have more to lose. We draw out the implications for theory, in terms of agency and reputation.
