In the context of the massive expansion of the knowledge base facing all fields of professional activity, instructional science (which embraces the use of a knowledge-engineering approach to curriculum design) could well help to unvael the complexity of important pedagogical issues confronting accounting educationalists. The delineation and use of an expert knowledge base within the framework of the ‘dimensions of processing model’ of human information processing provides a valuable focus for making decision about the breadth, depth and nature of specific educatinal objectives. Knowledge engineering, which is fundamental to this process, appears to provide an appropriate framework for the systematic planning, development, delivery and evaluation of high-quality education and training programmes. Such an approach base while ensuring practitioners and teachers to keep pace with their rapidly changing knowledge base while ensuring that students acquire and become competent in the use of the cognitive skills they need in order to work effectively in their chosen profession.  相似文献

We introduce a practical numerical method to the valuation of American options. The new feature is the exact reformulation of the problems over very small regions. Numerical examples and analyses show that our algorithm leads to very fast and highly accurate results.  相似文献

The main purpose of this paper is to deal with the analysis of the scale effect in the value-relevance of accounting numbers. We examine the impacts of widely used deflators on the adjustment of scale effect. We find that most of the usual deflators employed in the literature generate endogeneity problems. In this paper we recommend the use of exogenous deflator such as the number of employees in market-based accounting research models. This alternative deflator produces, at least for the USA and Canada data, slightly better statistical results than other (endogenous) deflators such as the market value, the book value of equity, or the total assets.  相似文献

The decision of whether to buy, hold or sell equities depends on whether the current price reflects the stock’s intrinsic or fundamental value. The residual income valuation model expresses this fundamental value as a function of current book value of equity plus the sum of discounted expected residual income. Although past and present income and book value information is readily available to investors, values taken by essential parameters in this model are unknown ex ante, particularly the cost of equity or discount rate and future residual income. Any point estimate of equities’ fundamental value according to the model may therefore conceal considerable variation around the estimate, even in the presence of minor perturbations in the model’s inputs. In this paper, we introduce a fuzzy-based approach which reflects the imprecision inherent in certain parameters in equity valuation. We extend the limited prior fuzzy-based literature on investment analysis by introducing the concept of fuzzy fundamental equity value, initially on an illustrative example. To further demonstrate this fuzzy representation, illustrative financial statement data for individual UK companies are considered, with fuzzy fundamental equity values evaluated over progressive forecast horizons. Our series of illustrative applications (which encompasses the standard crisp approach) make the inherent uncertainty involved in estimating equity value immediately apparent.  相似文献

This note reviews auditing theory and professional standards describing the relationship between internal accounting control systems and substantive audit testing. It presents three graphical models that may be used to illustrate to students the basic theoretical relationships and to clarify some points in the professional literature that may be confusing to students and practitioners. We have found these graphical models to be a useful teaching tool. They permit students to extend beyond mere verbalizations to a visualization of the theoretical concepts involved. We model a stream of cash flows as an optional stochastic process, and value the cash flows by using a continuous and strictly positive linear functional. By applying a representation theorem from the general theory of stochastic processes we are able to study this valuation principle, as well as properties of the stochastic discount factor it implies. This approach to valuation is useful in the non-presence of a financial market, as is often the case when valuing cash flows arising from insurance contracts and in the application of real options.  相似文献

This paper develops a Bayesian test of portfolio efficiency and derives a computationally convenient posterior-odds ratio. The analysis indicates that significance levels higher than the traditional 0.05 level are recommended for many test situations. In an example from the literature, the classical test fails to reject with p-value 0.082, yet the odds are nearly two to one against efficiency under apparently reasonable assumptions. Procedures for testing approximate efficiency and for aggregating subperiod results are also considered.  相似文献

This paper develops a closed-form option valuation formula fora spot asset whose variance follows a GARCH(p, q) process thatcan be correlated with the returns of the spot asset. It providesthe first readily computed option formula for a random volatilitymodel that can be estimated and implemented solely on the basisof observables. The single lag version of this model containsHeston's (1993) stochastic volatility model as a continuous-timelimit. Empirical analysis on S&P500 index options showsthat the out-of-sample valuation errors from the single lagversion of the GARCH model are substantially lower than thead hoc Black-Scholes model of Dumas, Fleming and Whaley (1998)that uses a separate implied volatility for each option to fitto the smirk/smile in implied volatilities. The GARCH modelremains superior even though the parameters of the GARCH modelare held constant and volatility is filtered from the historyof asset prices while the ad hoc Black-Scholes model is updatedevery period. The improvement is largely due to the abilityof the GARCH model to simultaneously capture the correlationof volatility, with spot returns and the path dependence involatility.  相似文献

The extensive disclosure mandated for defined benefit pension plans by FAS 87 resulted in part from the ongoing controversy concerning the nature of the pension plan obligation. Based on a review of the pension chapters of seven intermediate accounting texts, conflicting perspectives of the nature of the plan obligation have not been thoroughly and appropriately integrated in textbook discussions of FAS 87 reporting requirements.The objective of this article is to present a teaching method which interprets the reporting requirements of FAS 87 as a reconciliation of the conflicting perspectives concerning the pension obligations. Examples are provided demonstrating how FAS 87 reconciles the opposing perspectives in the basic financial statement presentation, and how the perspectives are useful in understanding the reporting requirements related to the minimum liability and actuarial gains and losses.  相似文献

This study utilizes the recursive cointegration technique to analyze the dynamic interdependence among ten major equity markets throughout North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia. Results indicate that the international equity markets are integrated and that the degree of integration among these markets has increased over time. A scrutiny of the various crisis periods reveals that a major financial crisis had an effect of increasing the level of convergence among these markets. Moreover, the recursive cointegration technique is able to pinpoint and capture the approximate timing of a major global crisis. In addition, the study finds that the U.S., Japan, India, China, U.K., and Germany lead the other markets with the U.S. contributing most heavily to the common trend. Overall, the results indicate that profitable opportunities from portfolio diversification are limited across major markets and that these benefits are further reduced during episodes that are marked by a global financial turmoil.  相似文献

This paper demonstrates how to teach accounting present value in a way which separates individual topics and progresses from skills which are easily learned to activities which require abstraction and integration. The method stresses a visual frame of reference, and explains the relationship between the interest rate and the flow of funds in a business transaction according to a simple funds inflows equals funds outflows rule. The approach is consistent with accepted learning theory, and is especially helpful for students who have difficulty with algebra.  相似文献

The paper discusses some classroom interactive activities, as well as interview results from interviews conducted with 11 international students and one Australian student at Charles Sturt University. The teaching approach proposed in this paper is to conduct classroom interactive activities which study theories and research results from a range of disciplines in order to illustrate key points that apply equally as much to accounting theories and the accounting research process, e.g. the Positive/Normative dichotomy. The last two decades have witnessed a tremendous growth in the volume of assets and liabilities whose cash flows depend, in a variety of ways, on the path of interest rates. Some of these, including floating-rate notes and swap agreements, contractually base cash flows on current and past interest rates and contain caps, floors, and other, more complex features. Others, including mortgages, many corporate bonds, and time deposits, are fixed-rate instruments that contain embedded options, such as those to prepay, call, or withdrawal. The irregular exercise of these options causes cash flows to vary as time proceeds and interest rates rise or fall. This paper develops a state-contingent claims technique for valuing such securities. It is derived from the option-based model of Breeden and Litzenberger (1978) using the transition matrix approach of Banz and Miller (1978). Particular attention is paid to valuing so-called path-dependent securities whose contemporaneous cash flows depend on the historical path of interest rates as well as their current level. A detailed example is provided in which an adjustable-rate mortgage is valued under a variety of economic and security specific assumptions.  相似文献

This study investigates whether financial analysts incorporate accounting conservatism into their earnings forecasts and whether it is more difficult for them to forecast earnings for less conservative firms, and then examines the impact of the findings on the return predictability of the value‐to‐price (V/P) ratio. After controlling for the other factors affecting forecast accuracy, such as earnings predictability and information uncertainty, I find that analysts incorporate accounting conservatism into their earnings forecasts and that forecasting earnings is more difficult for less conservative firms. Consequently, the return predictability of the V/P ratio is stronger for more conservative firms, and previously reported return predictability of the V/P ratio is an average across firms with differing levels of conservatism.  相似文献

This article presents a model to estimate the relative quality of publication outlets based on objective journal characteristics. Our model improves upon the one proposed by Bean and Bernardi [Bean, D. F., & Bernardi, R. A. (2005). Estimating the ratings of journals omitted in prior quality ratings. Advances in Accounting Education, 7, 109–127.] in three important ways. First, we develop a dependent variable that is a composite score based on five prior journal perception studies. Second, our model considers different independent variables; audience, journal availability, inclusion in the Social Sciences Citation Index (an independent measure of quality), and the journal’s submission fee. This combination of variables increases the model’s explanatory power by 21% compared to Bean and Bernardi’s average R2. Finally, the results of our model are more consistent with those of prior perception studies. We also apply the model to recent accounting faculty publications, which provides a comparative rating of more than 200 journals. We expect our model for estimating journal quality to help faculty, promotion and tenure committees, and university administrators evaluate the quality of journals where accounting faculty publish, an important aspect of assessing research productivity.  相似文献
