Recently there has been a revival of interest in the nature of the employment relationship. The employment relationship in a market economy has been traditionally understood as a dynamic equilibrium between the contending forces of conflict and cooperation. However, some contemporary accounts purport to detect a fundamental change in the nature of the employment relationship. These arguments are flawed because they appear to mistake changes in employment arrangements for changes in the core features of the employment relationship. As the contemporary employment relationship remains rooted in market economies, where labour is bought and sold, its core characteristics persist. In testing this claim, we examine whether new working arrangements are associated with changes in attitudes and behaviour. This is based on a survey of white-collar union members in Ireland. We find little support for the assumption that new working arrangements such as increased job autonomy and involvement in decision-making are eradicating the old conflictual attitudes associated with the traditional employment relationship and psychological contract.  相似文献

  • Wage growth has been relatively slow since 2007 in advanced economies, but an upturn may be in sight. Slow productivity growth remains an issue but tighter labour markets make a positive response by wages to rising inflation more likely and there are signs that compositional and crisis‐related effects that dragged wage growth down are fading – though Japan may be an exception.
  • Overall, our forecasts are for a moderate improvement in wage growth in the major economies in 2017–18, with the pace of growth rising by 0.5–1% per year relative to its 2016 level by 2018 – enough to keep consumer spending reasonably solid.
  • Few countries have maintained their pre‐crisis pace of wage growth since 2007. In part this reflects a mixture of low inflation and weak productivity growth, but other factors have also been in play: in the US and Japan wage growth has run as much as 0.5–1% per year lower than conventional models would suggest.
  • The link with productivity seems to have weakened since 2007 and Phillips curves – which relate wages to unemployment – have become flatter. A notable exception is Germany, where the labour market has behaved in a much more ‘normal’ fashion over recent years with wage growth responding to diminishing slack.
  • ‘Compositional’ factors related to shifts in the structure of the workforce may have had an important influence in holding down wage growth, cutting it by as much as 2% per year in the US and 1% per year in the UK. There are some signs that the impact of these effects in the UK and US are fading, but not in Japan.
  • The forecast rise in inflation over the next year as energy price base effects turn positive is a potential risk to real wages. But the decline in measures of labour market slack in the US, UK and Germany suggests wages are more likely to move up with inflation than was the case in 2010–11 when oil prices spiked and real wages fell.

In this paper the hedonic theory of housing markets is used to generate a multinomial logit model of household behavior in an urban housing market. Application of hedonic theory to housing markets is by now fairly familiar and a link to multinomial logit has also been established. However, by emphasizing more heavily the bid price interpretation of hedonic theory, this paper develops a new connection to econometric estimation that essentially involves running the usual logit equations in reverse. One advantage of this approach is that the link between the logit equations and hedonic theory involves bid price rather than utility functions, and this in turn permits the empirical results to be given an extremely clear interpretation. Furthermore, in contrast to the standard logit model, the extreme value distribution required to justify the estimation technique emerges endogenously as part of the analysis.  相似文献

In this paper, we extend a dynamic efficiency wage model to the case of multiple local labour markets that interact through migration. Firms are concerned about turnover costs. The quitting behaviour of workers is a function of local labour market conditions, non-wage income and the costs and benefits of migration to other local labour markets. A synthetic micro sample of 20,302 observations from the 1986, 1991 and 1996 New Zealand Censuses of Population and Dwellings provides evidence supporting the theory. Across subgroups, the wages of workers with relatively inelastic local labour supply and/or lower geographical mobility are relatively more responsive to changes in the local employment rate. The evidence is consistent with the notion that local employers engage in monopsonistic competition with respect to the employment of such workers.  相似文献

Research in ethical consumerism has concentrated on attempts to either categorize ethical consumers or to uncover their decision‐making processes, but to‐date there have been few investigations into the key ethical drivers behind the decision‐making process. This study attempts to identify these ethical drivers within their particular product groups by means of a survey of self‐proclaimed ethical consumers distributed via a questionnaire placed in the Ethical Consumer Magazine. The findings indicate that environmental issues are ranked above human rights and animal rights/welfare issues and that the ethical consumer considers the product groups to have differential importance ranging from the food products goods group, being the most strongly associated with ethical issues, to the ‘brown goods’ group (electric goods such as stereos and TVs), which proved to be least associated with these issues. An examination of the ethical drivers within each group suggests that ethical consumers consider each product group on the basis of its bundle of ethical attributes, with differing levels of importance placed on each ethical issue within the purchase decision. The empirical implications of a model in which a worker participates in a labour market in which a job offer consists of a wage-hour pair are examined. Here, hours are not freely adjustable and the wage rate is typically different from the marginal value of leisure. This study empirically investigates the impact of economic, demographic, and political factors on the size of emigration from the Philippines. In 2007, overseas workers from the Philippines sent remittances in excess of US$14 billion annually to their families back home. Although these remittances are an important source of foreign exchange and play an important role in economic development, the determinants of emigration in the Philippines are not well established. A simple unrestricted error correction model of migration was specified and estimated using data spanning the period 1975–2005. Results indicate that the level of unemployment, adult literacy and population density are the key determinants of emigration in the Philippines. The result also indicates that government instability impacts negatively on emigration in the Philippines. The policy implications of the results are discussed.  相似文献

The effectiveness of contracts is bounded by the institutional environment in which they are designed and enforced. When firms form supply chain partnerships in emerging markets, they may experience contract ineffectiveness, which is defined as a firm's perceived limits of contracts with respect to safeguarding interests and coordinating activities. Specifically, we identify two institutional factors that may give rise to contract ineffectiveness, information transparency and legal enforceability, as they determine how effectively a firm designs and enforces a contract. In addition, we reveal that contract ineffectiveness prompts a firm to seek social ties, including business ties and political ties, to overcome the institutionally induced limits of contracts. These efforts, however, are moderated by the type of predominant pressure a firm bears. While equity pressure strengthens the relationship between contract ineffectiveness and a firm's pursuit of social ties, efficiency pressure weakens this relationship, because seeking social ties imposes an extra burden of efficiency. Tested by data collected from 187 distributors in China, our study reveals the institutional causes and the consequences of contract ineffectiveness, which is a common problem encountered by firms when forming supply chain partnerships in emerging markets.  相似文献

An evolutionary approach to the delimitation of labour market areas: an empirical application for Chile. Spatial Economic Analysis. Labour market areas (LMAs) are argued to represent a more appropriate policy framework than administrative units for the analysis of spatial labour market activity. This article develops LMAs for Chile by applying an evolutionary computation approach. This innovative approach defines LMAs through an optimization process by maximization of internal cohesion, subject to restrictions of minimum levels of self-containment and population. To evaluate the appropriateness of the LMAs, comparative analyses are performed between alternative delimitations based on different parameter configurations of the proposed method versus administrative boundaries and the most widely used method for official LMA delimitation, the travel-to-work areas method.  相似文献

The article analyses the impact of European regulations of posting on different national wage systems. The article shows that the impact varied across the countries and has been filtered by the national institutions regulating the labour market. In the voluntarist wage setting systems of Germany and even Sweden, they have been a major factor bringing wages back into competition. The ability of national actors to act has been considerably curtailed by the European Court of Justice (EUJ), which has placed free competition above the basic rights of autonomous collective bargaining. Because of the divergent interests of Member States, this weakening of national actors cannot be compensated for by transnational agreements. This ‘negative integration’ brings with it a serious risk that the inclusiveness of European wage systems will be eroded by a series of cumulative effects.  相似文献

We examine the opening of Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) markets in a multimarket trading environment. We find that the opening trades on the American Stock Exchange (AMEX) are the most costly. This result is consistent with the market power hypothesis which suggests that the specialists use their informational advantage about the order imbalance at the open or take advantage of the inelastic demand at the open by imposing wider spreads. We also find that the transparent opening mechanisms of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Electronic Communication Networks (ECNs) enable them to facilitate greater price discovery at the opening and to have more efficient opening prices. This result implies that the transparency effect dominates the market power effect. Further, we find that peripheral markets do not passively free ride on information revealed through the AMEX because their opening trades contribute significantly to the price discovery process.  相似文献

Owing to the asymmetry of stock markets, this study investigates the dependence structures for six regional stock markets according to different market conditions by applying the unconditional quantile regression (UQR) approach. This approach can address the traditional conditional quantile regression (CQR) approach’s limitation that its distributions are defined conditional on specific covariates. Specifically, we not only examine the detailed linkages among these six regional stock markets, but also explore the effect of global economic factors on them, given the strengthening of both international investment and the globalization of financial markets. The results show these dependence structures are often an asymmetric U-shaped or inverted U-shaped structure, which indicates that the impacts of both other geographically and economically close stock markets and economic factors are more pronounced during bear and bull markets than during normal markets, especially so in bear markets. Moreover, the UQR approach provides stronger extreme-value relationships and more significant asymmetric effects than the traditional CQR approach.  相似文献

An application of the LeChatelier principle in the field of location theory, particularly focusing on the effect of a change in the opportunity cost of land on the location of the outer boundary of a circular city with many industries, is demonstrated. It is shown that the effect on the outer city boundary will be greater, as more boundaries between industries inside the city are allowed to vary in response to a change in the opportunity cost of land.  相似文献
