Strategic alliances are now widespread. This paper shifts the focus from alliances among airlines toward strategic alliances involving passenger airlines and airports. Following a conceptual path analyzing motives, potential benefits and problems, potential fields of cooperation are identified along with three basic classes of airline–airport alliances. Capacity-based, marketing-based, and security based cooperation models are assessed with regard to benefits for the participating airline and airport partners. This expands the existing literature that has largely neglected the airline–airport relationship and its potential for developing their respective competitive strategies. The case of the alliance between Lufthansa and Munich airport serves as an illustration.  相似文献

Code sharing and global alliances both have been increasingly adopted by airlines worldwide in recent years. A growing number of airlines, therefore, are embedded in networks of multilateral “coopetitive” (i.e., cooperative, but competitive) relationships that influence their product offering, pricing strategies, operating efficiency, market power, and their overall successes. There has been considerable research analyzing the benefits for airlines from joining global alliances, including bilateral code-sharing partnerships. However, the joint effect of code-sharing and global alliances on airline performance has not been fully investigated. In this paper, we study how the use of code-sharing strategies and their structural embeddedness into global alliances may impact airline performance. Using a unique dataset compiled from Flight Global and Airline Business's Annual Airline Alliance Report, the paper empirically investigates the joint benefits of code-sharing partnerships and global alliances on airline profitability. The results based on a group of 81 airlines during the 2007–2012 period show that the profit margin of an airline is positively associated with the number of code-sharing partners it has. Furthermore, the profit margin gains from code-sharing are greater when an airline has a higher proportion of its code-sharing partners in the same global alliance; i.e., allied code-sharing partners. Finally, we find no significant evidence that the percent of comprehensive code sharing partnerships to total partnerships has an impact on profit margin.  相似文献

Deregulation, privatization and shifting demand patterns in the airline industry, combined with the emergence of low-cost airlines and rising fuel prices have increased the competitive pressure on legacy airlines. Since alliances do not deliver sufficient benefits to counterbalance these trends, many airlines have engaged in mergers to seek for additional cost and revenue synergies. An extent body of literature investigates the synergy potential in mergers and alliances, but there is no study on how synergies differ among mergers and what potential influence factors cause these differences. This paper aims at explaining differences in synergy estimates and realized synergies in recent airline mergers and places a special focus on geographical influence factors.The research methodology uses a comparative case study comprising six large airline mergers between 2003 and 2012 from Europe, North America and Latin America. After analyzing the cases individually, the pre-merger situation of the merging airlines, the synergy estimates and the realized synergies of the cases were compared.The results show considerable geographical differences in pre-merger cost structures, synergy estimates, and synergy realization. The European mergers present lower synergy estimates but also lower integration costs than mergers in the Americas. Whereas European airlines estimate cost synergies higher than revenue synergies, both North and Latin American airlines expect more revenue synergies than cost synergies from airline mergers. Only one merger showed superior post-merger profitability which indicates that the achieved synergies in the broad majority of the cases are insignificant.  相似文献

Global airline strategic alliances have emerged since the late 1980s, and their number has slowly risen through the years. Will the number of such alliances continue to proliferate? Or will airlines consolidate with one another to form mega-carriers? In this paper, the likelihood of various airline consolidation and alliance development possibilities was examined based on a number of high-level trends and forces. The most probable near-term industry alliance and consolidation structure is described, accompanied with a probable path of evolution. These predictions have important implications for managers of strategic alliances, carriers who are currently in an alliance as well as carriers who are planning to join one.  相似文献

Owing to the cut throat competition and economic uncertainty in the market, airlines are focusing on strategic alliances for satisfying customer needs, especially in the current time which is dominated by global integration, demanding customer and fast changing technologies. This strategy is widely adopted by airlines. However, the selection of strategic alliance partner is a very decisive decision, and this selection process engrosses a number of complex processes which is result of compound reflection of associated various factors. In addition, the decision makers may be inconsistent in their views and preferences, arising due to imperfect information or intrinsic conflict between various departments. This paper presents a model based approach of an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) for evaluation of criteria and fuzzy technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (FTOPSIS) for the selection of strategic alliance partner. A case of Indian airline industry demonstrates the application of the proposed approach. Eventually, robustness of the model is demonstrated by sensitivity analysis.  相似文献

Monitoring the carbon emission performance of Chinese airlines helps inform targeted carbon-reduction policies. This paper proposes a global Malmquist carbon emission performance index (GMCPI), which can measure dynamic changes in total factor carbon emissions performance over time using a production frontier framework. The study then applied the proposed index to evaluate carbon emission performance of 12 Chinese airlines from 2007 to 2013; the study also proposed bootstrapping GMCPI to perform statistical inferences on the GMCPI results. The empirical study generated in three meaningful findings. First, the carbon emission performance of the airlines improved by 11.93%, mainly through technological progress. Second, there were carbon emission performance differences among three different airline types; there was also a convergence of carbon emission performance. Third, the most important factor influencing carbon emission performance was the air routes distribution. Chinese airlines should consider improving carbon emission performance further, by establishing an evaluation system, enhancing communication and coordination among different airlines, adjusting the scale of airline development, and optimizing the air routes distribution.  相似文献

Alliances in the airline industry operate as a basic strategy to stimulate competition and both the number and the types of alliances have increased over time. Each airline maintains alliances simultaneously with a variable number of partners. The set of airline's alliance partners constitutes its alliance portfolio. A central theme of these portfolios is the way in which partner selection improve performance. Is the alliance portfolio configuration based on either similar or different partners? We examine how the differences can arise from differences between the partners themselves, from resource complementarity, and from the partners structural positions in the network. The relations between these types of differences and whether they affect firm performance are studied. Codeshare alliances established between airline companies at a global level are analyzed to establish their effects on performance. In particular, the study comprises 135 alliance portfolios all of which from major airlines. The results suggest that structural homogeneity and complementarity improve performance and that alliance portfolio diversity favors network resource complementarity.  相似文献

In this paper, airline efficiency is divided into three stages: Operations Stage, Services Stage and Sales Stage. The new three-stage strategic operating framework of airline efficiency is a modification of existing models. A new model, Virtual Frontier Network SBM, is proposed to evaluate the efficiency of 22 international airlines from 2008 to 2012. The results demonstrate the following: 1. The new model can apply to a new benchmarking airline such as Scandinavian Airlines. 2. Although passenger traffic, cargo traffic and revenue decreased from 2008 to 2009, most airlines’ overall efficiency increased in the period.  相似文献

The advent of global airline alliances in the 1980s gave rise to concerns that increased monopoly power of major carriers would lead to large and sustained producer surpluses. These global alliances now enjoy dominant market shares in the industry. This review examines some 15 years of alliance experience and finds no conclusive evidence that alliance membership has yielded monopoly profits to the airlines. Improvements in terms of load factors and general productivity levels have, for the most part, been accompanied by fare reductions of similar magnitude, resulting in only modest gains to the carriers.  相似文献

Communication via air routes is an important issue in a world organized around a web city network. In this context, the robustness of network infrastructures, e.g. air transport networks, are a central issue in transport geography. Disruption of communication links by intentional causes (e.g., terrorist attack on an airport) or unintentional (e.g., weather inclemency) could be crucial for countries, regions and even the airlines affected themselves. Policymakers and the management of airlines and alliances should be able to reduce the effects of such interruptions in order to ensure good communication through air transport (i.e., maximize the robustness of their network at a reasonable cost). The literature review of the study of air transport route networks through an analysis of complex networks has highlighted a lack of contributions to the study of the topology and the robustness of such networks which contrasts, with advances undertaken for other transport networks or communication systems. This survey suggests areas in which research should be undertaken, based on the existing literature in other areas and from three different perspectives: global route networks, airline alliances, airlines and airports so as to help towards a better understanding of air traffic and, therefore, to be able to assess the potential damage of any airport being inoperative for a continent, country or airline.  相似文献

The evaluation, acquisition and use of newly available big data sources has become a major strategic and organizational challenge for airline network planners. We address this challenge by developing a maturity model for big data readiness for airline network planning. The development of the maturity model is grounded in literature, expert interviews and case study research involving nine airlines. Four airline business models are represented, namely full-service carriers, low-cost airlines, scheduled charter airlines and cargo airlines. The maturity model has been well received with seven change requests in the model development phase. The revised version has been evaluated as exhaustive and useful by airline network planners. The self-assessment of airlines revealed low to medium maturity for most domains. Organizational factors show the lowest average maturity, IT architecture the highest. Full-service carriers seem to be more mature than airlines with different business models.  相似文献

This study analyses the effect of asset-light strategy on the dynamic efficiency of global airlines from 2008 to 2013. First, a dynamic data envelopment analysis is employed to estimate the dynamic efficiency of global airlines. Second, the degree of asset-lightness is computed by combining the concepts of the DuPont equation and financial ratios. Third, a multivariate analysis is performed to analyze the association between asset-light strategy and dynamic efficiency. The findings show that asset-light strategy significantly enables global airlines to have better corporate performance. Overall, this study suggests that global airlines should efficiently manage and allocate their light resources to sustain challenges in the dynamic global airline industry.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis is used to examine inter-temporal and peer group airline efficiency. Results for the US for 1985–2006 indicate that airline performance is converging over time. In particular, airlines inter-temporal inefficiency peaked earlier and then converged. Furthermore, using Tobit specifications it is seen that while demand intensity matters less in determining airlines inter-temporal inefficiency, their influence is stronger in determining peer group inefficiency. Block time, a representative of operational factors, tends to negatively impact airlines efficiency by imposing burdens on airline operations. Among the structural cost and revenue factors, fuel cost tends to affect inter-temporal inefficiency more robustly than it does to peer group efficiency. Labor pay tends to reduce inefficiency in case of inter-temporal while increasing peer group inefficiency. The events of September 11th had little or no impact on inter-temporal inefficiency but tended to reduce peer group inefficiency in a significant way. Finally, airlines efficiency tends to be robustly affected by block hours; reducing them increases efficiency.  相似文献

This study examines the influences of airline global alliances on the purchase intention of international air passengers in Taiwan. The findings indicate positive relationships between global airline alliances, brand equity, brand preference and purchase intention with a moderation effect of involvement impacting on the relationship between global airline alliances and brand equity, and the relationship between brand preferences and purchase intention. In particular, for highly involved passengers, the effect of global airline alliances on brand equity, and brand preference on purchase intention, is significant.  相似文献

This paper examines the formation of alliances in the contemporary airline industry, comparing this with developments in business collaboration in industry generally. It identifies the main forces driving airlines into alliances, before considering the strategies that airlines are adopting in marketing joint services, and the policies that governments are pursuing in relation to the impact of alliances on the intensity of competition. One of the main arguments advanced is that alliances increase competition in through-markets via hubs, and that they can be expected to have pro-competitive effects in narrowing price-cost margins on long-haul services, something that can be traded against any lessening of competition in short-haul hub-to-hub markets.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the code-share connectivity of carriers from the three global alliances: Star Alliance, Sky Team and oneworld. We generate 2-leg online and code-share connections to evaluate the existing connectivity. Additionally, we generate all potential interline connections between members of the same alliance that are not yet supported with existing code-shares and analyze what share of the potential connectivity remains unused. We find that code-share connections account to about one-fourth of the total number of international connections offered by alliance members. 73% of those code-share connections are with partners from the same alliance, 6% with carriers from competing alliances and the rest with other carriers, which means that airlines seek partnerships not only within their own global alliance but even with members of competing alliances. At the same time, over 25% of the total potential code-share connections between members of the same alliance remain unused. This connectivity potential is better utilized within the network of Sky Team and oneworld than within Star Alliance. American and European carriers show a higher degree of code-share partnership with their alliance partners than Asian carriers. Overall, code-share partnerships are strongly driven by strategic decisions on bilateral airline level. Many airline-pairs fully utilize their connectivity potential (almost half of the total existing code-share connections) but some cooperate only on selected routes or not at all. Over one-third of the remaining code-share connectivity potential within alliances is attributed to airline-pairs that don't partner at all.  相似文献

This article discusses the financial efficiency of 42 airlines from 25 countries, in 2001 (the year of the September 11 terrorist attack in the United States), and their profitability in the following year. The Malmquist index was used to indicate the airlines’ capital structure changes from 2001 to 2002. The results show airline capital structure management and profitability dynamics following the unexpected event of 2001. The main conclusion is that airlines which moved more intensively to reduce their indebtedness showed improved profitability, given their size, fleet and intangible assets.  相似文献

The competitive environment of the Chinese airline industry has experienced rapid change since non-state-owned airlines entered the market in 2004. We focus on measuring the productivity changes in the Chinese airlines, especially state-owned ones after this change. The results show that non-state-owned airlines are performing better than state-owned airlines. The productivity changes of state-owned airlines are mainly driven by technical changes before or after the entries of non-state-owned airlines. They have little efficiency improvement. However, the productivity changes of private airlines are mainly due to efficiency improvement. The changes associated with international joint venture cargo carrier are due to its significant improvement in both the efficiency and technical changes.  相似文献

This paper examines the forms and effects of vertical relationships between airports and airlines with a focus on the North American and European aviation markets. We find that such vertical relationships enables those participating to achieve various benefits and may be formed as a competitive response to other competing airport–airline alliances. In some cases, vertical airport–airline relationships strengthen the hub status of major airports, leading to increased employment and service quality in local markets. On the other hand, preferential treatment of a particular airline by an airport may enhance that airline’s market power, allowing it to dominate the airport and charge hub premiums. The competition and welfare implications of airport–airline vertical alliances can be complicated and two-sided, subject to the influences of other factors such as the market structures of the airline and airport markets.  相似文献
