The place and role of Russian railways in external ties as well as the transit potential for increasing their competitiveness under conditions of stronger competition and realization of alternative projects on the part of the neighboring states are shown.

Urban population in late medieval England: the evidence of the lay subsidies

Was there a growth in the proportion of the population living in England's towns in the later middle ages? Uncertainty about national population trends and about the taxation multipliers needed to arrive at population totals has made it difficult to answer this question. A direct comparison of the proportion of taxpayers that was urban in 1377 and 1524 suggests that the urban share of population was static or may even have declined in this period. However, such decline provides no simple index of urban prosperity or decay: a decline in urbanization could be the product of rural buoyancy rather than of urban recession.

The right pharmaceuticals at the right prices: Consumer perspectives

This article describes the general concerns which have led the consumer movement to become increasingly active and vocal on health issues at the international level. Several surveys carried out by consumer organizations into the promotional activities of drug companies revealed that an enormous quantity of bad information was being given to the developing countries at rather heavy cost. The international consumer movement has thereby become increasingly involved in lobbying and campaigning to protect consumer interests, while continuing its vital work in consumer education and research. An action coalition - the Health Action International (HAI) - was set up in 1981 to act as a spearhead of this campaign. It is to ensure a sort of quality control over the activities of the bodies interested in health and health-related issues, such as drug supplies. This paper describes the studies, reports and activities of HAI, including a draft code which they have issued in response to the IFPMA's own code.
