China's trade surplus has been on the rise since 2005.The surplus hit US＄32.1 billion in 2004,and has soared to US＄177.5 billion in 2006.The Chinese government has made the reduction of the trade surplus one of its major macro-economic goals since last September.It has actively sought to rein in the surplus by simultaneously making several adjustments in finance rates,taxation,exchange rates,and export policies.However,the surplus has not shown any signs of slowing down or reversing its growth trend.In the first eight months of this year,China's trade surplus has already reached US＄161.758 bil- lion,already close to the US＄177.5 billion total for all of 2006.The following is a brief analysis of the internal and external factors behind the surplus increase.

The Chinese mainland recorded US$1.4 trillion in foreign trade volume last year, helping China to remain the third largest tradcr in the world. Behind the big figures though, a widening trade surplus is arousing the concerns of trade partners.

China′s trade surplus in August rose 14.9 percent from a year earlier,as imports growth decelerated sharply on lower commodi- ties prices. The surplus last month was US＄28.69 billion,posting gains for the second month in a row.The figure was US＄25.28 billion in July and US＄24.97 billion last August.

China's foreign trade in January 2012 According to statistics of the Customs,China's exports and imports in the first month of 2012 reached $272.6 billion,down 7.8％ over last year.Specifically,exports stood at $149.94 billion,down 0.5％ year on year;imports $122.66 billion,down 15.3％.The month saw a trade surplus of $27.28 billion.The 2012 Chinese Spring Festival,which fell on January,factored into the data.
