The recent theoretical asset allocation literature has derived optimal dynamic investment strategies in various advanced models of asset returns. But how sensitive is investor welfare to deviations from the theoretically optimal strategy? Will unsophisticated investors do almost as well as sophisticated investors? This paper develops a general theoretical framework for answering such questions and applies it to three specific models of interest rate risk, stochastic stock volatility, and mean reversion and growth/value tilts of stock portfolios. Among other things, we find that growth/value tilts are highly valuable, but the hedging of time-varying stock risk premia is less important.  相似文献

This paper derives an optimal rule for hedging currency risk in a general utility framework. Ex ante hedging performance of the forward markets is examined using the optimal hedge ratio derived from the utility model and an optimal rule derived from another model (excess return per unit risk) suggested in the hedging literature. Results of this study indicate a naive (one-to-one) hedge performs similarly to the optimal hedge ratios under either model. An implication of this study is that financial managers of multinational firms should simply follow a one-to-one rule when hedging foreign exchange risk in the forward markets.  相似文献

We discuss utility maximization problems with exponential preferences in an incomplete market where the risky asset dynamics is described by a pure jump process driven by two independent Poisson processes. This includes results on portfolio optimization under an additional European claim. Value processes of the optimal investment problems, optimal hedging strategies and the indifference price are represented in terms of solutions to backward stochastic equations driven by the Poisson martingales. Via a duality result, the solution to the dual problems is derived. In particular, an explicit expression for the density of the minimal martingale measure is provided. The Markovian case is also discussed. This includes either asset dynamics dependent on a pure jump stochastic factor or claims written on a correlated non tradable asset.  相似文献

This paper derives optimal perfect hedging portfolios in the presence of transaction costs within the binomial model of stock returns, for a market maker that establishes bid and ask prices for American call options on stocks paying dividends prior to expiration. It is shown that, while the option holder's optimal exercise policy at the ex-dividend date varies according to the stock price, there are intervals of values for such a price where the optimal policy would depend on the holder's preferences. Nonetheless, the perfect hedging assumption still allows the derivation of optimal hedging portfolios for both long and short positions of a market maker on the option.  相似文献

We investigate the optimal hedging strategy for a firm using options, where the role of production and basis risk are considered. Contrary to the existing literature, we find that the exercise price which minimizes the shortfall of the hedged portfolio is primarily affected by the amount of cash spent on the hedging. Also, we decompose the effect of production and basis risk showing that the former affects hedging effectiveness while the latter drives the choice of the optimal contract. Fitting the model parameters to match a financial turmoil scenario confirms that suboptimal option moneyness leads to a non-negligible economic loss.  相似文献

权证发行人在存在交易成本时对冲风险,若按照B—S理论进行动态连续避险操作,将造成巨大的交易成本,致使B-S动态连续避险不可行。因此存在交易成本时,对避险的操作都采用间断性避险。本文在统一均值方差框架下,系统全面的比较了存在交易成本的五种避险策略。在比例交易成本情形下,Whalley—Wilmott避险策略优于其他所有策略,当避险误差的标准差相同时该策略的交易成本最小;其次分别是delta固定避险带避险策略,基于标的资产价格变化的避险策略,Leland避险模型和间断的B—S避险策略。随着波动率σ上升,无风险利率γ下降,基于变动的避险策略相对于基于时间的策略优势更大。  相似文献

This paper was to price and hedge a quanto floating range accrual note (QFRAN) by an affine term structure model with affine-jump processes. We first generalized the affine transform proposed by Duffie et al. (2000) under both the domestic and foreign risk-neutral measures with a change of measure, which provides a flexible structure to value quanto derivatives. Then, we provided semi-analytic pricing and hedging solutions for QFRAN under a four-factor affine-jump model with the stochastic mean, stochastic volatility, and jumps. The numerical results demonstrated that both the common and local factors significantly affect the value and hedging strategy of QFRAN. Notably,  the factor of stochastic mean plays the most important role in either valuation or hedging. This study suggested that ignorance of these factors in a term-structure model will result in significant pricing and hedging errors in QFRAN. In summary, this study provided flexible and easily implementable solutions in valuing quanto derivatives.  相似文献

I examine a continuous-time intertemporal consumption and portfolio choice problem under ambiguity, where expected returns of a risky asset follow a hidden Markov chain. Investors with Chen and Epstein's (2002) recursive multiple priors utility possess a set of priors for unobservable investment opportunities. The optimal consumption and portfolio policies are explicitly characterized in terms of the Malliavin derivatives and stochastic integrals. When the model is calibrated to U.S. stock market data, I find that continuous Bayesian revisions under incomplete information generate ambiguity-driven hedging demands that mitigate intertemporal hedging demands. In addition, ambiguity aversion magnifies the importance of hedging demands in the optimal portfolio policies. Out-of-sample experiments demonstrate the economic importance of accounting for ambiguity.  相似文献

Input price variability is an important source of risk for corporations that process raw commodities. Models of optimal input hedging are developed in this paper based on the maximization of managerial expected utility. The relationship between hedging strategies and output decisions is examined to assess the impact of the ability to set output prices on futures market participation. As a firm's ability to set output prices diminishes in the short run, input futures positions increase although the optimal hedge ratio may either increase or decrease. For a perfectly competitive firm, however, shifts in output price caused by input price changes provide a natural cash market hedge of input price risk and reduce the firm's optimal input futures position.  相似文献

This paper examines the optimal futures hedging decision of a firm facing uncertain income that is subject to asymmetric taxation with no loss‐offset provisions. All futures contracts are marked to market and require interim cash settlement of gains and losses. The firm is liquidity constrained in that it is forced to prematurely close its futures position on which the interim loss incurred exceeds a threshold level. The liquidity risk created by the interim funding requirement of a futures hedge is shown to proffer the firm perverse incentives, thereby making an under‐hedge optimal. This under‐hedging result holds irrespective of whether the firm is risk neutral or risk averse. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We explicitly compute closed formulas for the minimal variance hedging strategy in discrete time of a European option and for the variance of the corresponding hedging error under the hypothesis that the underlying asset is a martingale following a geometric Brownian motion. The formulas are easy to implement, hence the optimal hedge ratio can be employed as a valid substitute of the standard Black–Scholes delta, and the knowledge of the variance of the total error can be a useful tool for measuring and managing the hedging risk.  相似文献

The problem of option hedging in the presence of proportional transaction costs can be formulated as a singular stochastic control problem. Hodges and Neuberger [1989. Optimal replication of contingent claims under transactions costs. Review of Futures Markets 8, 222–239] introduced an approach that is based on maximization of the expected utility of terminal wealth. We develop a new algorithm to solve the corresponding singular stochastic control problem and introduce a new approach to option hedging which is closer in spirit to the pathwise replication of Black and Scholes [1973. The pricing of options and corporate liabilities. Journal of Political Economy 81, 637–654]. This new approach is based on minimization of a Black–Scholes-type measure of pathwise risk, defined in terms of a market delta, subject to an upper bound on the hedging cost. We provide an efficient backward induction algorithm for the problem of cost-constrained risk minimization, whose associated singular stochastic control problem is shown to be equivalent to an optimal stopping problem. This algorithm is then modified to solve the singular stochastic control problem associated with utility maximization, which cannot be reduced to an optimal stopping problem. We propose to choose an optimal parameter (risk-aversion coefficient or Lagrange multiplier) in either approach by minimizing the mean squared hedging error and demonstrate that with this “best” choice of the parameter, both approaches have similar performance. We also discuss the different notions of risk in both approaches and propose a volatility adjustment for the risk-minimization approach, which is analogous to that introduced by Zakamouline [2006. The mean-variance hedging approach for pricing and hedging claims in incomplete markets was originally introduced for risky assets. The aim of this paper is to apply this approach to interest rate models in the presence of stochastic volatility, seen as a consequence of incomplete information. We fix a finite number of bonds such that the volatility matrix is invertible and provide an explicit formula for the density of the variance-optimal measure which is independent of the chosen times of maturity. Finally, we compute the mean-variance hedging strategy for a caplet and compare it with the optimal stategy according to the local risk minimizing approach. Using the five-minute interval price data of two cryptocurrencies and eight stock market indices, we examine the risk spillover and hedging effectiveness between these two assets. Our approach provides a comparative assessment encompassing the pre-COVID-19 and COVID-19 sample periods. We employ copula models to assess the dependence and risk spillover from Bitcoin and Ethereum to stock market returns during both the pre-COVID-19 and COVID-19 periods. Notably, the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the risk spillover from Bitcoin and Ethereum to stock market returns. The findings vis-à-vis portfolio weights and hedge effectiveness highlight hedging gains; however, optimal investments in Bitcoin and Ethereum have reduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, while the cost of hedging has increased during this period. The findings also confirm that cryptocurrencies cannot provide incremental gains by hedging stock market risk during the COVID-19 pandemic.  相似文献

We consider the optimal capital accumulation policy of a competitive firm operating in the presence of decreasing returns to scale, price uncertainty, and costly reversibility of investment. We characterize the optimal accumulation policy and derive the value of the firm by focusing on the marginal investment decision and solving the associated optimal timing problem characterizing the option value of the associated opportunity to either disinvest or acquire a marginal unit of capacity. We also characterize the required exercise premia associated with the optimal policies and demonstrate that hysteresis prevails within this class of accumulation problems as well.  相似文献

An implicit partial differential equation (PDE) method is used to determine the cost of hedging for a Guaranteed Lifelong Withdrawal Benefit (GLWB) variable annuity contract. In the basic setting, the underlying risky asset is assumed to evolve according to geometric Brownian motion, but this is generalised to the case of a Markov regime switching process. A similarity transformation is used to reduce a pricing problem with K regimes to the solution of K coupled one dimensional PDEs, resulting in a considerable gain in computational efficiency. The methodology developed is flexible in the sense that it can calculate the cost of hedging for a variety of different withdrawal strategies by investors. Cases considered here include both optimal withdrawal strategies (i.e. strategies which generate the highest possible cost of hedging for the insurer) and sub-optimal withdrawal strategies in which the policy holder׳s decisions depend on the moneyness of the embedded options. Numerical results are presented which demonstrate the sensitivity of the cost of hedging (given the withdrawal specification) to various economic and contractual assumptions.  相似文献

In this article we consider the measure of hedging effectiveness proposed by Howard and D' Antonio (HD) when there are multiple cash and futures markets. It is found that the HD measure can be decomposed into two components: one solely determined by the futures market conditions, the other affected by both cash and futures markets as well as the hedger's cash portfolio. We then analyze the impacts of optimal cash portfolios on the HD measure. Although the Ederington hedging effectiveness is bounded over all cash portfolios, the conclusion does not apply to the HD measure.  相似文献
