Keynes' Investments

Abstract . It is well known that in The General Theory, Keynes is very critical of the stock exchange market, an institution, he says, that “cannot be claimed as one of the outstanding triumphs of laissez-faire capitalism.” At the same time much of his income was derived from speculation in commodities, stocks and foreign exchange. Some questions raised by Keynes’ way of making a living are addressed. When did his market activities begin? Did he, as some detractors allege, take advantage of insider information? What principles of behavior did he follow in his buying and selling? What was his attitude toward his way of making a living? And, above all do the views expressed in The General Theory reflect the influence of Keynes’ market experience? It is suggested that there is, in fact, a close relation between Keynes’ financial experiences and some of his distinctive economic theories. His experiences, interpreted in the light of his Apostolic-Moorean beliefs, caused the deeply critical attiiude toward the whole financial system that one finds in The General Theory's chapter 12.

Investments and the holdup problem in a matching market

This paper studies the properties of the steady state equilibrium in a bilateral matching market with ex ante investments at the market entry stage. Investment incentives depend on search frictions because both parties in a match are partially locked-in when they bargain over the joint surplus from their sunk investments. The associated holdup problem is more important for the long side of the market. In the extreme case of perfectly substitutable investments only the agents on the short side make investments. When market frictions become negligible, the market equilibrium approaches the Walrasian outcome.

Probabilistic Evaluation for Commercial Real Estate Investments

Throughout the decision-making process, prudent investors must address questions regarding the probabilities of future profit gain. In this study, the probability-based discounted cash flow （DCF） method with net present value （NPV） as the indicator was adopted as an analysis tool. A probabilistic framework for measuring exceeding probability of annual rate of return on a commercial real estate investment under a specified holding period was developed. Based on the framework, the relation curves of annual rate of return versus the corresponding exceeding probability of return for available financing schemes were constructed. These curves were used as a tool to prioritize the schemes and inform decision-making. An example case is presented to demonstrate the decision-making process developed in this study. Through the proposed process, investors are given basic information on the return, probability that profit gain will occur, and feasibility of financial schemes for commercial real estate investments.

新型工业化的投资机制及政策选择

新型工业化的核心是“以人为本,全面、协调和可持续发展”。这要求我们在推进工业化进程中,将后代人的利益作为当代人利益的函数,以使当代人的决策避免最大的后悔。重视人力资本投资是走新型工业化道路的必然要求,它不仅对推进新型工业化进程有倍数效应,而且符合后代人利益最大化要求,能实现可持续发展。二元经济结构和区域发展不平衡是我国在新型工业化进程中面临的两大难题。通过提高城镇化率,将农村剩余劳动力不断向城镇转移,既缺乏足够的支撑基础,也不具备可持续发展性。城镇化首先是一种生活方式,而不是单纯的地理概念。大力推行“离土不离乡、进厂不进城”的政策,是缓解大中城市就业压力,解决“三农”问题,实现可持续发展的必然选择。     

多阶段人力资本投资:基于复合实物期权理论

在知识和信息时代,人力资本投资面临各种不确定因素的影响,往往具有复合实物期权特性.传统的DCF理论忽略了人力资本投资的柔性价值,并且连续型复合期权定价模型也无法适用于具有多标的资产变量和多重不确定性来源的投资.为此,本文以高等教育投资为例,借鉴决策树分析法,提出了一个基于二叉树网格法的多阶段人力资本投资的复合实物期权决策模型.实例应用表明:这一模型很好地弥补了DCF的不足,可以为不确定条件下个人人力资本投资决策提供非常清晰的逻辑分析框架和评价模型.高等教育投资蕴含着复合实物期权投资机会,因此个人接受高等教育投资是值得的.
