State-level economic and technological development zones (ETDZs) are products of China‘s reform and opening-up policies and a new engine of growth for the Chinese economy. They have made tremendous contributions to the development of the Chinese economy. However,some problems have emerged in the course of this progress and new challenges are still lying ahead. Sustainable development is possible only when the strategy and objectives of development are adjusted, when the integrated investment environment is optimized, when industries are upgraded, when technical innovations are made, when independent innovation capabilities are lifted, when the mode of economic growth is changed, and when innovations are made in government management.

农民参加新农保的影响因素实证分析——基于重庆市25个区县的调查数据(英文)

Based on survey data from 334 farmers in 25 counties of Chongqing,this thesis analyzes empirically the influencing factors of farmers’participation in New Farmers’Insurance.The result of Probit regression demonstrates that(1)the degree of farmers’understanding of the New Farmers’Insurance is the most significant factor of their participation;(2)area of family plowland and distance to the city exert significant impact:the participation rate is higher when the area of plowland is larger;it is also higher when the village is farther from the city;(3)neighbors’insurance behaviors have important effects on farmers’decisions;(4)whether or not the farmer has joined other insurances has significant effects on his/her participation in New Farmers’Insurance.     

Market Response and Firms＇ Operating Performance Surrounding Actual Share Repurchases： Evidence from Hong Kong

Share repurchases have become a popular payout method to distribute cash flows to shareholders not only in the U.S. but also other countries. This study examines the firms＇ share price and operating performance surrounding actual share repurchases and the motivations behind share repurchases in the Hong Kong stock market. The empirical results show that, on average, firms engage in share repurchases when their stocks are under-valued andrepurchases are followed by abnormal positive returns. Among repurchases, the stock price performance varies across firms＇ size and market-to-book ratios. The market responds most favorably to repurchases that are made by small and ＂value＂ firms. This suggests that smaller firms are usually less analyzed and more likely to be undervalued; hence, the market reacts more favorably when they repurchase.

Why China Should Invest Its Foreign Exchange Reserves in the Major US Banks

The subprime mortgage crisis and the resultant inflationary monetary policy in the USA have left the Chinese economy subject to four risks in particular. First, China＇s exports to the USA might continue to decline. Second in the medium term, the higher US inflation rate will lead to a weak dollar, which will negatively affect China＇s exports. Third in the long term, when the US Federal Reserve decreases money supply to control inflation, the US economy might enter another recession, hurting China ＂s exports further. Fourth, China＇s foreign exchange reserve assets might suffer heavy losses when the US inflation rate rises. Conventional foreign exchange investment strategies are insufficient for dealing with these four risks. Investment by China in the major US banks is suggested in the present paper. This strategy would mitigate if not eliminate all four risks. China could gain considerable financial returns on investments with only moderate risk.

Population Aging and Housing Consumption： A Nonlinear Relationship in China

Mass migration of rural workers to cities will inevitably increase urban housing demand. However, the scale of vacant urban housing will increase in future as a result of the population aging and the rising number of empty nesters. Therefore, demographic transition may not only increase housing demand, but also increase housing supply. Using an overlapping generations model, the present paper investigates＇ the impact of demographic transition on housing consumption. We find that there is a nonlinear relationship between the elderly dependency ratio and housing consumption in China. With the deepening of population aging, housing consumption will increase; when the elderly dependency ratio reaches a turning point, housing consumption will decrease. The turning point of the nonlinear curve also depends on population mobility. A greater degree of population mobility will result in a delayed turning point. Furthermore, the turning point of the nonlinear curve will emerge when China＇s elderly dependency ratio reaches a value of 32 percent in 2025. This means that over the next decade, China should continue to increase the level of housing supply,
