The Influence of Green Innovation Performance on Corporate Advantage in Taiwan

The purpose of this study was to explore whether the performance of the green innovation brought positive effect to the competitive advantage. This study found that the performances of the green product innovation and green process innovation were positively correlated to the corporate competitive advantage. Therefore, the result meant that the investment in the green product innovation and green process innovation was helpful to the businesses. This study argued that the businesses should cognize the correct value and positioning of the green innovation.Dr. Chen is the assistant professor in the Department of Business Administration in National Yunlin University of Science & Technology in Taiwan. His research focused on management of technology, innovation management, corporate environmental management and intellectual capital. Dr. Lai is the professor in the Department of Business Administration in National Chengchi University in Taiwan. His research focused on management of technology, new product development and operation management. Dr. Lai is also the legislator in Taiwan. Dr. Wen is the professor in the Graduate Institute of Technology and Innovation Management in National Chengchi University in Taiwan. His research focused on corporate environmental management, marketing management of technology and entrepreneurship management. 贸易便利化能否通过贸易创造促进省际贸易——来自中国贸易便利化调研的证据

本文使用能够由企业判断反馈的、具有省域区分度的变量,通过问卷调查测度了中国的贸易便利化水平,并在此基础上使用开埠通商历史作为工具变量,从贸易创造和贸易转移的视角,用引力模型实证研究了贸易便利化对中国各省份国际贸易和省际贸易的影响及其作用机理。结果显示,在控制关税等因素的情况下,贸易便利化水平的提升能够大幅提升我国各省份的对外贸易;不同地区贸易便利化作用的差异也揭示了我国对外开放的节奏和效果;虽然贸易便利化会带来贸易转移效应,短期抑制省际贸易,但是它能够通过国际贸易促进省际贸易,从而提高国内经济相互融合的水平。     

Instructor quality affecting emergency medical technician (EMT) preparedness: a LEADS project*

This represents one of a series of studies of the Longitudinal Emergency Medical Technician Attributes and Demographics Study (LEADS) being undertaken by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This secondary analysis of the LEADS database, which provides a representative sampling of EMTs throughout the United States, examines the effects of instructor quality on the level of preparedness of emergency medical technicians (EMTs). Results showed significant differences, based on instructor quality, in the ratings on ten dimensions of EMT preparedness for both EMT Basics and EMT Paramedics. Implications for HRD practitioners, adult educators and researchers are discussed.     

An empirical study of moral reasoning among managers in Singapore

The study reported here sought to examine the ethical orientations of business managers and business students in Singapore. Data were obtained using Defining Issue Test. Analysis of Variance revealed that age, education and religious affiliation had influenced cognitive moral development stages of the respondents. Vocation, gender and ethnicity did not seem to have affected moral judgement of the subjects. Contrary to the general view, both business students and business managers demonstrated the same level of sensitivity to ethical dimensions of decision-making. Implications of the findings and limitations of the study are discussed. Jayantha S. Wimalasiri is Senior Lecturer of Business Policy at the National University of Singapore. The Role of Business Ethics in Merger and Acquisition Success: An Empirical Study

The purpose of this paper is to explore job performance, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) from an ethical perceptive. A great number of studies have extensively discussed the link between M&A and performance; however, most focused on the financial functions and strategy selections. Although ethical issues emerge in the M&A process, it is a less studied area. This study adopted the structural equation modeling approach to empirically test our hypotheses. Based on 264 samples from financial companies, data analyses indicated that ethical conduct in M&A is significantly correlated with employee job performance. Ensuring employment security and caring practices can significantly explain organizational commitment. Organizational commitment also plays a significant mediating role between a company’s ethical conduct and employee job performance. Managerial implications are also provided.Carol Yeh-Yun Lin is a Professor of the Department of Business Administration at National Chengchi University in Taiwan. She received her Ph.D. in Human Resource Development from the University of Texas at Austin in 1992. New Round of Petroleum Products Price Adjustment

Background
On December 18, 2008, a new petroleum products pricing mechanism was carried out in China. According to the Procedure for the Administration of Oil Price （Trial） issued last month by National Development and Reform Commission, if the moving average price for crude oil in international market changes more than 4% in 22 consecutive working days, the prices for gasoline and diesel in domestic market can be adjusted accordingly. So, the curtain for petroleum product price adjustment in domestic market was opened by the end of April.     

Consumer policy for the third world

A large-scale representative field study in Thailand and much anecdotal evidence from other lands indicate that consumers in the less developed countries (LDC) are facing a high-risk marketplace. This is due to structural features of the market, seller chicanery, and buyer poverty. Consumers respond by intensive search, the value of which is greatly reduced by the ephemeral nature of local information. Clearly, the LDC are in dire need of aggressive consumer policy. A program of consumer emancipation is set forth in detail. The policy priorities postulated are consumer protection, education, and information — an order reverse from that earlier proposed for industrialized Western nations. The program is predicated on a concurrent transformation of cryptocapitalist markets into an open market sector where buyers and sellers are substantially equal partners.Hans B. Thorelli is the E. W. Kelley Professor of Business Administration in the Graduate School of Business at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana 47401, U.S.A. The field research project in Thailand from which this article emanates was codirected by the author and Dr. Gerald D. Sentell, presently the John F. The Women in Management Research Program at the national centre for management research and development

NCMRD initiated the Women in Management Research Program in January 1988. One of the objectives of the program is to help managers and policy makers deal with issues arising from women's increased participation in managerial and professional jobs backing research to help arrive at solutions to the problems being encountered both by institutions and by women themselves. Significant research funds have been raised from the private sector and ten projects have been funded to date. This article describes the early development of the Program and its research mandate.Ronald J. Burke is the Imperial Life Professor in Organizational Behavior and Senior Fellow at the National Centre for Research and Development, School of Business Administration, The University of Western Ontario. He conducts research in the areas of organizational behavior and human resources management.Dorothy Mikalachki is a researcher and case-writer working at the School of Business Administration. She served for three years on the Board of Directors of an employment counselling agency for women. She is the author and co-author of a number of business articles, the most recent ones being concerned with women's issues. She has just completed a series of eight cases on Significant Women's Issues in Business.

Small business formation by unemployed and employed workers

This paper uses data from the Current Population Surveys for 1968–1987 and from the National Longitudinal Survey of Young Men to examine the relationship among unemployment and small business formation and dissolution for white men and women. We find that self-employed workers are more likely to have experienced unemployment than are wage workers because their higher entry rate into self-employment offsets their higher exit rate out of self-employment. Unemployed men and women who enter self-employment experience a larger drop in their earnings than the unemployed who return to wage work.The authors are Vice President, National Economic Research Associates and Associate Professor, Fordham University, respectively. Local Responsiveness Pressure, Subsidiary Resources, Green Management Adoption and Subsidiary’s Performance: Evidence from Taiwanese Manufactures

This study aims to explore if local responsiveness pressure and subsidiary resources influence green management adoption of overseas subsidiaries, and to investigate the relationships between the level of green management adoption and performance. The 101 effective samples were collected from 583 Taiwanese firms, which are listed in the top 1000 manufactory firms and have invested in China. Through structural equation model (SEM) analysis’ empirical results indicate that local responsiveness pressure and subsidiary resources both have positive effects on the level of green management adoption of the subsidiary. This study also suggests that the level of green management adoption is positively related to the subsidiary’s performance. Product development benchmarking versus customer focus in applications of quality function deployment

The study explores the tradeoff between efforts to benchmark on product-development practices and be customer focused in the implementation of a quality-improvement method. The results of a survey of thirty-three firms' experience with quality function deployment (QFD) reveal that benchmarking on how competitors, peers, or role models develop products facilitates process improvement but hinders customer focus. Smaller firms are also shown to gain more customer focus and process-improvement benefits from QFD than larger firms.The authors gratefully acknowledge the support of the Office of Manufacturing Management Research, the National Quality Research Center, and the Manufacturing Forum at the University of Michigan's School of Business Administration as well as the kind assistance of the American Supplier Institute for making this study possible.     

Electrical deaths in the US construction: an analysis of fatality investigations

Electrocution is among the ‘fatal four’ in US construction according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Learning from failures is believed to be an effective path to success, with deaths being the most serious system failures. This paper examined the failures in electrical safety by analysing all electrical fatality investigations (N = 132) occurring between 1989 and 2010 from the Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation programme that is completed by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. Results reveal the features of the electrical fatalities in construction and disclose the most common electrical safety challenges on construction sites. This research also suggests the sociotechnical system breakdowns and the less effectiveness of current safety training programmes may significantly contribute to worker's unsafe behaviours and electrical fatality occurrences.     

光平方事件及其对“北斗”系统发展应用的若干启示

光平方事件是首次出现合法的地面移动通信系统大规模大范围干扰全球卫星导航系 统（GPS）的事例。美国光平方公司的地面移动通信网在得到联邦通信管理委员会（FCC）批 准后,经评估认为对GPS系统会产生有害干扰,得到了美国PNT委员会、联邦航空管理局（FA A）以及国会的高度重视,进行了大量的测试评估,量化分析了光平方系统对GPS的有害干扰 。分析探讨了光平方事件深层次的原因是频率资源的争夺,结合我国对“北斗”系统发展, 提出需要深入分析研究第四代移动通信系统对“北斗”系统S频段下行信号潜在有害干扰。     

基于GIS的甘肃省A级旅游景区空间分布特征研究

本文选取国家旅游局评定的甘肃省131处A级景区,利用GIS空间分析方法和工具,定量分析了各景区间的欧式距离、分布均衡性以及与人口分布之间的均衡、配合程度等。结果表明,从宏观角度,甘肃A级景区的空间分布属均匀型,呈略有集中趋势的平均分布;从微观角度,甘肃A级景区地域与客源市场关系非常密切;景区密度相对较高的区域为酒泉-嘉峪关、平凉和兰州地区。     

Recalls and the Remediation of Hazardous or Defective Consumer Products: The Experiences of the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

There have been many analyses of the nation's safety, health, and environmental programs, but relatively few studies of consumer protection programs. The present study attempts to add to the literature in this area by examining, through early 1982, the recall programs for hazardous or defective consumer products of two federal agencies: the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The analysis focuses on an evaluation of existing recall methods and their success in repairing hazardous products or in removing them from the marketplace. A review of several indicators of “success” suggests that a large gap exists between the set of all such hazardous products and the subset identified as hazardous and effectively acted upon by the two agencies. Some suggestions for closing this gap are noted and discussed.     

Bhopal,India and Union Carbide: The second tragedy

The paper examines the legal, ethical, and public policy issues involved in the Union Carbide gas leak in India which caused the deaths of over 3000 people and injury to thousands of people. The paper begins with a historical perspective on the operating environment in Bhopal, the events surrounding the accident, then discusses an international situation audit examining internal strengths and weaknesses, and external opportunities and threats faced by Union Carbide at the time of the accident. There is a discussion of management of the various interests involved in international public relations and ethical issues. A review of the financial ratio analysis of the company prior and subsequent to the accident follows, then an examination of the second tragedy of Bhopal — the tragic failure of the international legal system to adequately and timely compensate victims of the accident.The paper concludes with recommendations towards public policy, as well as a call for congressional action regarding international safety of U.S. based multinational operations.Clayton Trotter is a graduate of the University of Texas School of Law and College of Business Administration. Provisions on the Administration of Foreign Exchange in Domestic Securities Investments of Qualified Foreign Institutional Investors

In accordance with the Regulations on the Foreign Exchange Administration of the People＇s Republic of China and the Measures for the Administration of Domestic Securities Investment by Quafified Foreign Institutional Investors, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange has formulated the Provisions on the Administration of Foreign Exchange in Domestic Securities Investments of Qualified Foreign Institutional Investors, which came into effect on the date of its promulgation.
