Although learning plays a pivotal role in the internationalization context of the firm, studies elaborating aspects of learning of early internationalizers (as opposed to late internationalizers) are largely missing. We address this deficit by examining the process of learning in the entry phase of internationalization. Our empirical results show that learning from direct experience is negatively related to early internationalization, whereas learning from others and learning from paradigms of interpretation have a positive impact on early internationalization. Furthermore, our results suggest that early internationalizers compared to late internationalizers continue to prefer cooperative modes of market penetration and show higher entry-mode stability in the same country.  相似文献

Using a large sample of 3,040 U.S. firms and 16,606 firm-year observations over the 1991–2010 period, we find strong evidence that firm internationalization is positively related to the firm’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) rating. This finding persists when we use alternative estimation methods, samples, and proxies for internationalization and when we address endogeneity concerns. We also provide evidence that the positive relation between internationalization and CSR rating holds for a large sample of firms from 44 countries. Finally, we offer novel evidence that firms with extensive foreign subsidiaries in countries with well-functioning political and legal institutions have better CSR ratings. Our findings shed light on the role of internationalization in influencing multinational firms’ CSR activities in the U.S. and around the world.  相似文献

This study uses institutional theory to explore the driving force for internationalization of firms in emerging economies. It posits that the internationalization practices of firms are driven not only by efficiency consideration, but also by the desire to conform to institutional isomorphic pressures exerted by the social environment. The impact of three types of institutional isomorphic pressures – coercive pressure, mimetic pressure and normative pressure – on the intensity of internationalization is investigated. Analysis using survey data collected from 174 Chinese firms shows that all three institutional pressures have positive and significant effects on the intensity of internationalization. We also examine the interaction between institutional pressure and firm capability. Results suggest that firm capabilities enhance the effect of coercive pressure on internationalization, and weaken the effect of normative pressure on internationalization.  相似文献

Although organizational learning plays a critical role in the internationalization of firms, researchers have largely focused on learning that occurs after a firm’s international entry (“learning by doing”). Few studies have discussed how a firm’s experiences prior to international entry affect its organizational learning after entry. Using a sample of Chinese internationalizers, we argue that pre-entry characteristics will influence organizational learning after international entry. We argue and show that prior experience with international companies in the domestic market is transferable and does affect an organization’s post-entry learning through a mechanism called analogical reasoning or “learning by analogy.”  相似文献

International Business research has focused attention on the role of the home country in firm internationalization. While this has produced insights as to how home countries condition firm internationalization, significant gaps remain. We focus on two. First, research on how and why countries differ in their internationalization support is limited. Second, research on how countries differ in the extension of their internationalization support into host countries is scant. Addressing these gaps, we develop a conceptual paper and put forward nine propositions. We theorize how differences in the dominant mode of economic coordination in home countries – in market-, business-, and state-led economies – relate to variation in their internationalization support. We explore the firm internationalization's impact on firm credit ratings in emerging economies. Adopting Chinese data from 2009 to 2018, we document that firm internationalization varies negatively with its credit ratings, indicating that emerging debt market participants are risk averse and prioritize the risks involved in firm internationalization endeavors. This association is amplified for firms operating in host countries with lower institutional quality, decreased cultural distance from home countries, and when firms do not hold tax haven subsidiaries. We observe that the main association is consistent when alternative dataset (India, Russia, and Brazil) or proxy (cost of debt) is applied.  相似文献

This article aims to contribute to the international and East-West business literature by discussing the nature of nonlinear internationalization based on a case study of an Italian firm, Meccanica Valle Metauro S.r.l., that had activities in Central and Eastern Europe and other countries and by identifying causes of nonlinearities. The study concludes that nonlinear internationalization may be caused by different internal and external factors and actors; that it can occur once or several times; that foreign market exit may be temporary (followed by re-entry) and permanent; and that de-internationalization does not always mean a failure for the firm.  相似文献

This paper explores how Facebook effectively used crowdsourced translation to accelerate its rapid internationalization. We apply the learning perspective of internationalization theory to unpack what the firm learned in order to mobilize crowd-based knowledge to facilitate internationalization in the virtual context, and how it did so. Increasingly, global activities are conducted in virtual space and virtual markets and thus the paper offers insights into successful expansion in this new terrain. The findings highlight two key points: (1) the firm used cognitive/explicit learning to acquire external and codified knowledge, rather than the experiential knowledge traditionally suggested in the literature on the process of internationalization, and (2) the firm's success rested on its ability to use virtual learning tools and incentive systems to acquire, articulate and integrate knowledge from communities of internationally dispersed users – the “crowd” – to accelerate its internationalization in cyberspace. This empirical study extends internationalization theory regarding knowledge and organizational learning.  相似文献

This paper examines the effects of the degree and geographic diversification of a firm’s R&D internationalization on its innovative performance. We use an unbalanced panel dataset of 401 observations from 110 multinational firms operating in the energy industry over a period of six years to support the argument that both the degree and the geographic diversification of a firm’s R&D internationalization have an inverted U-shaped relationship with a firm’s innovative performance. Our results also show that collaboration among R&D units located in different countries moderates this relationship by reducing both the positive effects and the challenges of the degree of R&D internationalization. This paper extends the emerging innovation focus in the headquarters–subsidiary literature by contributing to our understanding of the implications of the international R&D activities of firms and supports the utilization of social exchange theory in order to identify the moderating influence of the collaboration among a firm’s R&D units located in different countries.  相似文献

The importance of experiential knowledge for small firm internationalization has been emphasized in the process model of internationalization, the international new venture or born-global frameworks and the management characteristics perspective in the exporting literature. However, none examines in detail under what conditions experiential learning is more important for internationalization. We borrow insights from the socialization tactics literature to theorize how the context, content and social aspects of a foreign sojourn offer different opportunities for the acquisition of experiential knowledge to support the internationalization of small firms. We suggest that socialization tactics moderate the relationship between individual international experiential knowledge and small firm internationalization. We propose that the opportunities for international experiential learning are superior when the socialization context is individual and formal (rather than collective and non-formal), the socialization content is sequential and fixed (rather than random and variable) and when socialization involves serial and investiture (rather than disjunctive and divestiture) social aspects.  相似文献

We investigate the process by which firms become participants in official programmes of public support designed to promote outward internationalization. This study builds on previous research that has established the distinct factors associated with firms’ awareness and use of public support measures. These earlier studies have also shown that deficiencies within programmes manifest in low participation rates. However, scholars have not extended this reasoning to focus on the underlying processes involved, and have paid little attention to the steps through which firms elect to use public support, and how support operates upon, and within, the firm. In particular, the link between awareness of public incentives towards internationalization and the use of these incentives has been overlooked. General failure to understand this link is a potential source of policy inefficiency, reducing the effectiveness of those public programmes that employ incentives. We pose three research questions to examine the concept of such a link: (1) Do firms select public incentives that compensate for a lack of resources or capabilities in their possession? (2) Do firms react primarily to internal or external exigencies, for example, internal financial constraints or, rather, are they responding to unfolding circumstances, such as the more demanding market conditions experienced on internationalization? And (3) do firms use public support to “externalize” the increased risk to which they are exposed as internationalization proceeds, and thereby protect their external activities and investments from loss?The process that firms go through to apply for any type of public support is normally two-staged. Firms first become aware of incentives and then decide whether or not to use them. This process can be handled empirically using a Heckman Selection Model, which we apply to explore our research questions using survey data collected from a sample of Portuguese firms. We find that the greater are the internal limitations of these firms with respect to resources and capabilities and the more demanding are the conditions in which internationalization takes place, then the greater is the use made of public support. We find that awareness of the availability of support is promoted by firms’ in-house resources and capabilities and, at the same time, is positively associated with more demanding conditions of internationalization. The use of public support appears to be associated with the opportunity cost to the firm of public incentives, and with the increased risk inherent with internationalization. These results point to the existence of important sources of inefficiency within the process of application for policy measures, particularly with respect to the link between awareness and use. The use of public support is inversely associated with the opportunity cost to the firm of the resources deployed to apply for public incentives and, for firms with greater resources and capabilities, associated positively with the increased inherent risk of internationalization. We find evidence that it is the firms with greater resources and capabilities that predominate in the application for public incentives, allowing us to infer from the data that the typical recipient pursues more risky modes of entry, or selects locations with higher levels of risk, because of the availability of public support. These results point to the possible existence of important sources of inefficiency within the process of application for policy measures, particularly with respect to the link between awareness and use. This behaviour is quite distinct from the search for return on commercial investments and, therefore, is indicative of the possibility of social loss within this public policy intervention.  相似文献

This paper develops and tests a framework for the determinants of early internationalization by drawing on transaction cost economics supplemented with structural embeddedness reasoning. We theoretically explore how asset specificity, prior international experience of the management team, and international network contacts impact early internationalization of the firm. Furthermore, we elaborate how early internationalization is related to foreign market performance. Our results show that asset specificity is negatively related to early internationalization, whereas prior international experience of the management team and international network contacts have a positive impact on early internationalization. Furthermore, our results suggest that early internationalizers are more successful in respect to foreign market performance than companies that have internationalized in later years.  相似文献

Internationalization is, by nature, a dynamic and continuous process that unfolds over time. However, the extant literature on international entrepreneurship primarily focuses on the antecedents that influence the initiation of internationalization and downplays its post-entry process. Specifically, little research has examined how early internationalization relates to subsequent geographic expansion. To bridge this gap, we draw upon Penrose’s theory of firm growth and a judgment-based view of entrepreneurship. We posit that earlier resource commitment to foreign countries enables entrepreneurs to quickly start managerial learning based on their experience of experimentation activities in foreign markets, facilitating entry into new foreign markets. Especially, we hypothesize that the operational experience acquired through earlier foreign direct investment is positively associated with subsequent geographic expansion, and the location where to accumulate operational experience moderates the association. The results of our longitudinal 19-year (2000–2018) study on 75 Japanese early internationalizing firms provide evidence for our hypotheses.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate a sample of 122 Italian manufacturing small to medium-sized family firms, and analyse the effects of the degree of family involvement on their decisions to invest in psychically distant countries. Our findings indicate that higher family involvement tends to correspond to a lower number of foreign direct investments in psychically distant countries. Additionally, the firm’s age has a moderating effect on the relationship between family involvement and investments in psychically distant countries. When we analyse younger firms, family involvement turns out to be negatively associated with these investments, while this relationship is slightly positive when we consider older firms. These results allow us to move beyond family/non family owned comparative studies and provide a more nuanced view of family firm internationalization.  相似文献

Using panel data of 1080 multinational corporations (MNCs) from the United States, we examine the effects of environmental sustainability practices on the degree of firms’ offshoring activities. In addition, we disaggregate offshoring activities into their core components depending on whether or not the firm buys (inputs) or sells (outputs) and/or owns assets in a given country and examine the extent to which sustainability practices influence the different components of offshoring decisions. The results indicate that sustainability practices significantly affect offshoring activities of MNCs. In particular, we found that sustainable business practices matter when the firm sells goods or owns assets in the given host nation. Additionally, the results show that the sustainability–degree of the internationalization relationship is crucial for MNCs that have offshoring activities in advanced economies relative to those firms that have activities in emerging markets. This study draws on the behavioral theory of the firm to the postulate relationships between organizational slack and performance aspirations, and internationalization processes. Based on longitudinal data (2000–2008) from 772 publicly listed firms in Taiwan, the findings indicate that organizational slack significantly influences the internationalization processes. Specifically, firms with high organizational slack that have performance that falls below aspirations managers are more likely to exhibit (1) a rapid pace, (2) a wider scope, and (3) an irregular rhythm in their internationalization processes. In addition, we observed an interaction effect between performance feedback and different levels of slack on the internationalization processes.  相似文献

Integrating the behavioral theory of the firm and the OLI paradigm, this paper studies how performance feedback affects the location choice of emerging market firms between developed countries (DCs) and less developed countries (LDCs) during the process of internationalization. Using the sample of 1,306 Chinese public listed firms which established new foreign subsidiaries between 2008 and 2019, we find that the further a firm’s performance is below aspiration, the more likely it will invest in LDCs than DCs, whereas the further a firm’s performance is above aspiration, the more likely it will invest in DCs than LDCs. In addition, technology-based capability and labor intensive production capability have moderating effects on the relationship between performance feedback and location choice between DCs and LDCs. This paper complements and extends the OLI paradigm by injecting dynamic and non-economic factors to explain OFDI location choice.  相似文献

We explore the factors influencing the internationalization of small family firms. Based on interviews with six family firms in Singapore, we highlight the importance of (1) family harmony, (2) trust in external relationships, (3) social and business networks, and (4) organizational resources and capabilities in the internationalization process. We show how the socioemotional wealth factors of trust and harmony affect networking and resources, which in turn affect internationalization. We find that initial internationalization through exports is enabled through trust in family networks, but the typical family characteristics of a desire to maintain family harmony and distrust of outsiders have a negative impact on network creation and resource development, which constrains the extent to which the firm internationalizes beyond exporting. In order to move from the first stage (exports/similar markets) to the second stage (joint ventures/different markets) of internationalization, less emphasis on trust and family harmony accompanied by more emphasis on building external networks and resources may be necessary. In international entrepreneurship literature, entrepreneurs moving across borders have received less attention than other entrepreneurs. Also, only scant attention has been paid to immigrant entrepreneurs’ contributions to their organizations. This paper aims to contribute to the emerging international immigrant entrepreneurship literature by studying Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs’ roles in their firms’ international and innovative activities in Canada, China, and other countries. It is based on three cases of Chinese entrepreneurs who established businesses in Canada. We conclude that these immigrants’ experience of doing business in China and Canada, their network relationships and knowledge of these markets quickened their firms’ internationalization considerably. Moreover, these firms became active in product or service innovation as the case immigrants also involved other immigrants and locals. Consequently, immigrant entrepreneurs should actively use their connections both in their new country of residence and also in their previous home country, but to become even more successful, they should also reach beyond their ethnic ties.  相似文献
