This research study has two distinct steps: (1) a quantitative analysis to identify the citation classics in contemporary small enterprise research (CSER) and (2) a more qualitative discussion of the contributions of these classical articles. The motivation of the study is to reveal the evolution of thought in the relatively new field of entrepreneurship research.CSER is defined as all main articles published during 1986–1992 in the Journal of Small Business Management, International Small Business Journal, Entrepreneurship: Theory and Practice, Journal of Business Venturing, Small Business Economics, and the Asia Pacific International Management Forum. The resultant analysis encompasses 725 articles and approximately 16,720 of their citations. The quantitative analysis revealed that the source journals have been responsible for the publication of 35% of the most cited articles during the 18-year period of analysis, with each subperiod increasing the percentage of citations from these source journals. The qualitative analysis of the citation classics articles indicated that more than 50% of CSER articles are well grounded in observational and contemplative theory building with a view to developing convergent theories that provide an overall understanding of the entrepreneurial process. This is similar to the pattern of citations in other emerging fields. This citation classics analysis reveals a number of points. First, the main topic areas of inquiry in the citations classics were: personal characteristics of entrepreneurs, financing and venture capital, and entrepreneurial climate and its relation to society, and strategy and growth. Of these, the personal characteristics of entrepreneurs was a consistent topic over the entire CSER period. However, the general diversity of topic areas provides some empirical support for the “garbage can model” synthesized from earlier studies of emerging fields in which diversity in topic areas has been characterized as a loose collection of ideas rather than a coherent structure with a shared intellectual paradigm. A similar characterization can be made of the entrepreneurial research during the CSER period.Second, the most evident methodology was observational and contemplative theory building, although empirically based survey techniques were gaining favor in the latter two periods. Third, the dominant objective of most research was to improve the understanding of small enterprise theory. This dominance of the theory building literature has also been observed in other citation studies of emerging fields. Fourth, it appears that many of the most cited articles have drawn upon the literature of related and nonrelated disciplines. Many of these articles have been exploratory in nature and have attempted to rationalize concepts and variables used in small enterprise research. Finally, CSER citation classics have been impacted only by Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Small Business Management, and Entrepreneurship: Theory and Practice among the source journals.  相似文献

Currently, entrepreneurs and corporations overwhelmingly do not view the alleviation of global poverty as a strategic priority. Yet business activity can have a negative as well as a positive effect on each distinctive form of poverty. In order to reduce poverty, entrepreneurs have to find ways of limiting the negative aspects. This might be achieved by deliberately augmenting strategies so that they can achieve a synthesis, in partnership with governments and NGO’s. Alan E. Given increasing ethical problems in business, many organizations have tried to control these problems by institutionalizing ethics such as by creating new ethics positions and formulating and enforcing codes of ethics. In this study, the impact of implicit and explicit forms of institutionalization of ethics on job satisfaction, esprit de corps, and organizational commitment for marketing professionals is investigated. Additionally, the influence of organizational socialization, ethical relativism, and age relative to each of the above organizational climate constructs is examined. Results indicate that at least one of the forms of institutionalization of ethics is a significant determinant of all three organizational climate constructs. However, while organizational socialization is a significant determinant of all three organizational climate variables, relativism is only significant in determining organizational commitment (in a negative direction) and age is only significant in determining job satisfaction. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB International) is committed to its role in setting worldwide standards to enhance the quality of management education. The organization is expanding its brand presence in Europe, where business schools are beginning to seek AACSB International accreditation. In the United States, an increase in the number of business schools seeking AACSB International accreditation is also occurring. Business school leaders not only see the transcendent importance of AACSB International accreditation; they also realize the challenges that are involved in the accreditation process. The focus of our discussion is on the challenges confronted by business schools in both the United States and Europe. We compare and contrast the challenges on both continents. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

As foreign direct investment in the U.S. continues to become both more visible and controversial, the general public remains skeptical about the corporate citizenship of these foreign affiliates. Four dimensions of corporate citizenship — orientations, organizational stakeholders, issues, and decision-making autonomy — were used to compare the inclinations of foreign affiliates with the domestic firms operating in the U.S. chemical industry. The only significant differences between the U.S. sample and those firms headquartered in other countries-of-origin were found in the area of corporate citizenship decision making autonomy.Tammie Pinkston is Assistant Professor of Strategic Management at the University of Oklahoma.

This essay examines the current state of International Business education worldwide and comments on evolving trends. The degree of internationalization of curricula at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels is examined. In a world facing the contrary pulls of global consumerism versus the search for a local identity, what exactly should the manager learn about International Business in order to complete his or her education? The essay also examines alternative methods for organizing International Business studies at universities, as well as in the growing number of off-site and certificate programs. It also ventures opinions on the value of an International Business major in the job market for graduating students, on whether the International Business label confers an advantage on faculty, or whether it confers a stigma, and on academic orthodoxies which have slowed the internationalization of business curricula.  相似文献

This study has been designed to investigate whether Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) orientations have shifted in their priority in response to society's changing expectations. For this sample of U.S.-based multinational chemical subsidiaries, it appears that the top priority continues to be economic responsibilities, followed closely by legal responsibilities.

This paper analyzes the MNC subsidiaries’ trade-off between the need for knowledge creation and the need for knowledge protection, and relates it to the extent of knowledge outflows generated within the host location. Combining research in International Business with Social Theory, we build a conceptual framework suggesting that subsidiaries that extensively draw on external knowledge sources are also more likely to generate knowledge outflows to local firms. We argue that this may be explained by the subsidiaries’ willingness to build the trust that facilitates the establishment of reciprocal knowledge linkages. However, when the value of the subsidiary's knowledge stock is very high, the need for knowledge protection restrains reciprocity mechanisms in knowledge exchanges, thus reducing the extent of knowledge outflows to the host location. This study contributes to the literature on the firm-level antecedents of FDI-mediated local knowledge outflows, as well as to the broad IB literature on the relationship between subsidiaries and their host regions. The implications for managers and policy-makers are also discussed.  相似文献

In this paper I argue that the poker analogy is unsuitable as a model for collective bargaining negotiations. Using the poker game analogy is imprudent, its use undermines trust and ignores the cooperative features of business, and its use fails to take into account the values of dignity and fairness which should characterize labor-management negotiations. I propose and defend a model of ideal family decision-making as a superior model to the poker game. Norman E. Bowie is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Delaware. This paper presents the technoeconomic evaluation of a third generation rollout scenario followed by the identification of the market conditions for two operators in a simple game theory model. The considered scenarios reflect the point of view of both dominant operators and new entrants. Technoeconomic results are presented in terms of net present value (NPV), acting like the pay-off function in the proposed theoretical Game Theory model. The business case presented here was studied by using a tool, developed by European Projects IST-25172 TONIC/ECOSYS, a model developed by the EURESCOM P901 project and the Game Theory Tool named Gambit.  相似文献

We investigate whether and how digitization may affect the power relationships that constrain the upgrading of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in global value chains (GVCs). Combining GVC literature and Resource Dependency Theory, we examine the three features that shift upgrading constraints: asset-specificity, market disintermediation, and innovation sources. The outcomes of a multiple case study encompassing Brazilian firms intentionally sampled from the Digital Games Industry refine our propositions, leading to the concept of digital power as the potential difference in the power imbalance that a supplier may experience in relation to lead firms when performing similar functions in value chains with different digitization degrees. We contribute to International Business literature regarding the relatively unaddressed effects of digital technologies on power relationships in value chains, and deepen the extant understanding of value chain upgrading as a phenomenon. For practitioners, our results inform ways of benefiting from digital industries.  相似文献

Scholars and executives have expressed concern over the growing frequency of unethical practices in companies' conduct of competitive analysis — the process by which a firm gathers, analyzes, and interprets data about its rivals. This article reports the results of an exploratory study of 137 senior executives' perceptions of unethical competitive analysis practices, their causes, and their potential effect on industries, companies and individuals. The article discusses the implications of the results for developing guidelines to safeguard against ethical violations in competitive analysis.Dr. Shaker A. This conceptual paper contributes to the internationalization literature in response to previous criticisms by enabling the integration of apparently contradictory strands of the literature and incorporation of the potential role of the Internet. Knowledge is at the core of received wisdom on internationalization. This is consistent with the notion that internationalization represents an innovation of the firm and often entails decision-making under conditions of uncertainty, for both of which knowledge is vital. Given the link between knowledge and internationalization, apparent tensions in the literature can be resolved by recognizing its different types, consequently varying roles and diverse sources. Furthermore, network relationships—of growing significance in the literature—yield social capital, which in turn leads to knowledge acquisition and creation; thus it is worthwhile to integrate knowledge and social capital perspectives. Finally, consistent with the knowledge-based approach adopted in the paper, the application of Internet technology is conceptualized in terms of information effects viz., information dissemination, acquisition and sharing which could lead to, respectively, enhanced internationalization, knowledge and social capital. An earlier version of this paper was presented at the 2004 Academy of International Business Conference in Stockholm and the 2003 European Academy of International Business Conference in Copenhagen; the author thanks the respective discussants, Professors Jongmoo Jay Choi and Jan-Erik Vahlne, for their encouraging and helpful comments  相似文献

This paper starts off from what seems to be a difficulty of ethics in African Business today. For several years now Transparency International has placed some African countries high on its list of most corrupt countries of the world. The conclusion one draws from this assessment is that either African culture has no regard or concern for ethics, or that there has been a gradual loss of the concept of the ethical and the moral in contemporary African society. Equally problematic is the teaching and promotion of Business ethics in organizations. Western philosophical theories and systems alone have not succeeded in providing access to ethical life of people in modern Africa. This paper is an attempt to inject an orientation that takes into account African manners and customs, their religious convictions and their understanding of the world as a whole, in the teaching of Business Ethics. East and Central Africa have been selected due to their common lingua franca, Kiswahili, and the fact that the author has more teaching experience within that region.  相似文献

Information Ethics across Information Cultures   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Information cultures consist of the values, beliefs and behaviour relating to information ownership and management, while information ethics applies to the moral application of data. The author's experience of Russia and its information culture provides a striking case study of the disastrous social and business consequences of an absence of information ethics. This paper was delivered in its original form at the First World Congress of Business, Economics and Ethics of the International Society of Business, Economics and Ethics (ISBEE), held in Reitaku University, Tokyo, in July 1996. The author is Associate Professor of Information Systems in the School of Business, Fairfield University, Fairfield, Connecticut 06430–5195.  相似文献

Attitudes towards Business Ethics: A Five Nation Comparative Study   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Increasingly the business environment is tending toward a global economy. The current study compares the results of the Attitudes Towards Business Ethics Questionnaire (ATBEQ) reported in the literature for samples from the United States of America, Israel, Western Australia, and South Africa to a new sample (n = 125) from Turkey. The results indicate that while there are some shared views towards business ethics across countries, significant differences do exist between Turkey and each of the other countries in the study. Similarities and differences are discussed in terms of the countries' ratings on the Corruption Perceptions Index (as reported by the Internet Center for Corruption Research) and Hofstede's Theory of International Cultures. Recommendations for managers interacting with employees from differing countries are provided.  相似文献
