This article began life as a debate for MSc students in a public management class at Queen Mary, University of London, convened by the authors. In seeking to explain the significance of consumerism in contemporary public service reform, the authors took different positions on the normative appeal of consumer-oriented public service reforms. In this article George Jones begins by setting out the advantages of consumerism in public services. In the second part of the article, Catherine Needham sets out to rebut some of these purported advantages. In the conclusion, the authors identify some points of consensus and the key points of disagreement.

Critical reading in accounting

The wave of postmodernism has reached accounting studies. With it that wave has brought new thought provoking and inspiring ideas such as: the local determination of meaning and the proposition that meaning of signs comes from other signs, not from reality. However, if these ideas are left abstract, they may not inspire accounting education with their full potential. Hence, this paper offers a three-stage framework of analysis, the so-called strategy of critical reading, which draws upon ideas of postmodernism and hermeneutics. The framework suggests how the reading of accounting texts could find new insights from postmodern ideas, without lapsing into a linguistic idealism that would deny the world any external reality independent of language.     

Student perceptions on using guided reading questions to motivate student reading in the flipped classroom

Although upper-level accounting majors tend to be more motivated than introductory-level students, or non-accounting majors, it is still challenging to motivate such students to complete and understand assigned readings. The purpose of this study is to assess student perceptions on the implementation of guided reading questions to motivate and enhance student reading to help flip the intermediate accounting classroom. Without essential preparation, students may be unable to adequately participate during class discussions or perform well across other course dimensions, especially in a flipped classroom setting. We assigned guided reading questions related to two required intermediate financial accounting textbook presentations (one course specifically for accounting majors and the other for non-accounting majors). Student perception results indicate that the guided reading questions positively impact student motivation, reading comprehension, effort level, and understanding of the material before attending class. The results are strongest for non-accounting majors.

Bursting bubbles: Further results

It is widely recognized that simple perfect foresight maximizing models often allow a continuum of hyperinflationary equilibria in the presence of a fixed money supply. Various attempts have been made to restrict the number of equilibria in such models. This paper illustrates some new aspects of a recent proposal.
