The Select Committee on the Treasury & Civil Service has been lobbying for improvements in the Government's presentation of public expenditure information to Parliament At last, it looks as though changes will be made. But will the House of Commons — and, in particular, the select committees — be able to seize the opportunity?

Pay awards, in the public as well as the private sector, are coming down faster than the rate of inflation. But the means by which this has been achieved could lead to widespread and lasting resentment. The only way forward in the long run is an acceptable, and accepted, incomes policy.
