This paper examines the diffusion of digital switches from 1983 to 1996. It expands upon the existing literature by extending
the data available back an additional six years and by adding independent companies such as Frontier, SNET and Cincinnati
Bell. The data (graciously provided by DataQuest) indicate that the early period of adoption, which previous papers have been
unable to examine due to lack of data, is significantly different than the later period of adoption. In the early period the
installed base and the ability of larger networks to internalize more of the total benefits are the primary determinants of
adoption, while the distribution of population becomes important in the later period as firms finish building out their densest
areas. Overall, independents adopted earlier than the RBOCs, although this difference appears to be driven by the fact that
independents were still using primarily electromechanical switches in 1983, while RBOCs had already invested heavily in analog
technology. The data suggest that new technologies such as internet telephony will be adopted most rapidly by newly built
networks such as Qwest and Level 3. 相似文献

The stationary distribution of a birth and death process may not be approximated by a diffusion. The general situation is
illustrated on the “musical chairs” model by Binmore et al. (1995).
This model is shown to generate outcomes which are not captured by the concept of the ultralong run equilibrium selection
introduced in Binmore et al. (1995). 相似文献

An evolutionary model of the size distribution of firms 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Fariba Hashemi 《Journal of Evolutionary Economics》2000,10(5):507-521
An analytical study of the evolution of the distribution of firm size in an industry is presented. A drift-diffusion model
is proposed to express the time-evolution of density of firm size within the industry. The model blends the conventional,
more or less static, determinants with the kinds of dynamic considerations introduced by stochastic processes of evolutionary
dynamics. The steady-state distribution as well as the dynamic behavior of the model are derived. Parameters in the resulting
analytical expressions are then fit to a population of firms in the non-manufacturing service sector. The empirical portion
of the paper validates the proposed evolutionary model. 相似文献

Formal rationality plays a limited role in human cognition, which originated in the creation of patterns to interpret phenomena
and link phenomena with action. The creation of new patterns rests on imagination, not logic, typically stimulated by a perceived
inadequacy in established patterns. Internal routines of the brain and external institutions form structures of cognitive
capital; the institutions of markets, including money prices, aid the development of consumption capital, which simplifies
most choices and provides scope for selective experiment and innovation in creating goods. Such innovation depends on differences
between individuals and changes in their circumstances. 相似文献

A simple framework is presented in which, each period, each of N individuals chooses among K alternatives. Individual actions are interrelated through a social network which arrays the strength of influence of each
person on each other person. Emphasis is on the role of the network. The framework accommodates a variety of particular contexts,
suggests theorems, and unifies a sizable part of the fragmented literature on network interaction. 相似文献

A resource-based view of Schumpeterian economic dynamics 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
John A. Mathews 《Journal of Evolutionary Economics》2002,12(1-2):29-54
This paper seeks to offer a theoretical platform where the modern “resource-based view” of the firm might meet with evolutionary
economics and the study of entrepreneurship, and with the economics of industrial organization. It does so by proposing the
concept of the “resource economy” within which productive resources are produced and exchanged between firms. This is presented
as the dual of the mainstream goods and services economy – where the “resource economy” captures the dynamic capital structure
of the economy. The paper is concerned to bring out the distinctive principles governing resource dynamics in the resource
economy, capturing competitive dynamics in such categories as resource creation, replication, propagation, exchange and leverage;
evolutionary dynamics in terms of resource variation, selection and retention; entrepreneurial dynamics in terms of resource
recombination and resource imitation, transfer and substitution; and industrial organizational dynamics in terms of resource
configuration, resource complementarities and resource trajectories. 相似文献

Government is studied as supporter of science and of the transformation of scientific discoveries into new technology and
firm formation. The importance of scientific discovery outside academe is recognized as is the experimental nature of the
transformation process entailing frequent business failure. Competence bloc theory is used to understand the minimum set of
actors with competence needed for the incentive structure to be complete and the risk of losing the winners minimized. Competence
bloc analysis also helps clarify the theoretical foundations of industrial policy and useful roles for science parks. I find
that to succeed as a catalyst for industrial competitiveness park management should be less concerned with science and technology
and more with the economics of the transformation process. 相似文献

The central theme of this address is the complicated relationship between the growth of the economy and the growth of knowledge.
This theme is explored with the help of a single concept “restless capitalism” which is used to capture the idea that capitalism
in equilibrium is a contradiction in terms precisely because the growth of knowledge cannot be meaningfully formulated as
the outcome of a constellation of equilibrating forces. This theme is explored through a discussion of growth accounting,
the relationship between innovation, markets and institutions and, as an example, the development of innovation in the field
of ophthalmology. We also discuss some pioneering contributions made by Simon Kuznets and Arthur Burns to the discussion of
evolutionary growth. From this Schumpeterian perspective we see the economy as an ensemble not an aggregate entity and so
see more clearly the importance of microdiversity in the relationship between growth of knowledge and growth of the economy. 相似文献

This paper examines the rapid growth of the polymer-based and biomedical clusters in Ohio and Sweden – two regions of similar
size and with similar traditions undergoing similar industrial restructuring.
Two issues are addressed: First, why has growth been so strong in these particular clusters, i.e., can we identify the sources
of the growth and dynamics in these sectors? Second, why do these two clusters differ in Ohio and Sweden in terms of size,
level and type of activity, number and composition of actors, size structure of firms and growth patterns over the last couple
of decades? In particular, what is the role of public policies as well as cultural, historical, and geographic factors?
Our main conclusions are (1) that there is strong path dependence in both clusters in both countries, and (2) that the key
to rapid development is a high absorptive capacity combined with rapid diffusion to new potential users. Our policy discussion
addresses these issues. 相似文献

Schumpeter and the revival of evolutionary economics: an appraisal of the literature 总被引:4,自引:1,他引:4
Jan Fagerberg 《Journal of Evolutionary Economics》2003,13(2):125-159
During the last two decades we have seen a revival of interest in the works of Joseph Schumpeter and “evolutionary” ideas
in economics more generally. A professional society honouring Schumpeter's name has been founded, and linked to it we have
had for more than fifteen years now a professional journal devoted to this stream of thought. However, it has been argued
that, despite these developments, the link between Schumpeter's own work and the more recent contributions to evolutionary
economics is in fact rather weak. This paper considers this claim. Based on an analysis of Schumpeter's contribution to economics
the paper presents an overview and assessment of the more recent literature in this area. It is argued that although there
are important differences between Schumpeter's work and some of the more recent contributions, there nevertheless remains
a strong common core that clearly distinguishes the evolutionary stream from other approaches (such as, for instance, so-called
“new growth theory”).

ID="*" Many people have contributed to this paper in various ways. Jon Hekland at the Norwegian Research Council started it
all by asking me to make an overview of the contribution from “evolutionary economics” to our understanding of contemporary
economies. Several people helped me on the way by supplying written material, comments and suggestions, and I am indebted
to all of them. Brian Arthur, Stan Metcalfe, Keith Pavitt, Erik Reinert, Paolo Saviotti and Bart Verspagen may be particularly
mentioned. A preliminary version was presented at the conference “Industrial R&D and Innovation Policy Learning – Evolutionary
Perspectives and New Methods for Impact Assessment” organised by the Norwegian Research Council (“SAKI”) at Leangkollen, Asker,
April 18–19.2002. I wish to thank the discussant, Tor Jakob Klette, and the participants at the conference for useful feedback.
Moreover I have benefited from comments and suggestions from the editors and referees of this journal. The final responsibility
is mine, however. Economic support from the Norwegian Research Council (“SAKI”) is gratefully acknowledged. 相似文献

Theoretical perspectives on strategic environmental management 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Don Goldstein 《Journal of Evolutionary Economics》2002,12(5):495-524
Strategic Environmental Management (SEM) incorporates into firms' core strategies the transformation of products and processes
that they believe an environmentally concerned society will increasingly demand. Significant threads have to do with the discovery
of cost savings and market opportunities from reducing environmental impacts. SEM, like the environmental regulation hypothesis
associated with Michael Porter, implies that society's efforts to reduce external environmental costs often lead to identification
of hitherto-ignored or undeveloped profit possibilities. This would be surprising from the standpoint of neoclassical economic
theory, to the extent that SEM utilizes available information about the potential costs and benefits of projects. Within the
framework of evolutionary, capabilities-based theories of the firm, however, this discovery and its exploitation in SEM make
perfect sense. Capabilities theory would imply that firms' intrinsic path dependence may previously have obscured such opportunities.
This paper examines the theory of SEM, its implications for neoclassical and capabilities theories of the firm, and survey
results drawn from the author's work with member companies in a regional pollution prevention roundtable.

Abstract. The system of denominations of US coins, which the paper treats as a quasi-genetic trait of the US monetary system, has not
been constant since inception but rather has evolved over time in the sense of being subject to innovation and selection.
However, all the innovations have disappeared, as have a number of the original denominations. Abstract theories of optimal
systems of denominations provide a good explanation of one selection factor, but other important influences include limiting
the number of separate denominations and accommodating the requirements of decimal counting. However, even some innovations
that ultimately disappeared survived for decades. 相似文献

This paper studies the demand for a distinction good – the prestige car – and examines how this demand for distinction influences
the evolution of the product. We focus on two very different sorts of distinction car: the Rolls Royce and the Ferrari. These
two examples help us to articulate two polar approaches to the demand for distinction: distinction through antiquity and distinction
through novelty. The paper sets out a model of the demand for distinction, and uses it to describe two trajectories along
which the prestige car – and the demand for it – may evolve. 相似文献

Bringing institutions into evolutionary growth theory 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Richard R. Nelson 《Journal of Evolutionary Economics》2002,12(1-2):17-28
Classical economics was both evolutionary and institutional. With the rise of neoclassical economics, both the evolutionary
and the institutional aspects were squeezed out of main line economic theory. The last quarter century has seen a rebirth
of both traditions, but as minority intellectual positions, and to a considerable extent separate ones. This essay argues
the need for a rejoining of evolutionary and institutional economics, and suggests a way to bring the two strands together
in a coherent way. 相似文献

This paper compares and contrasts the contributions of Joseph Alois Schumpeter and Josef Steindl to the competitive paradigm.
Both reject the static nature of traditional profit maximizing analysis and the analytical device of a representative firm.
Instead they both opt for a dynamic framework in which there is a key role for innovation. Differences emerge in terms of
the characteristics of individual firms that nurture the competitive struggle and are responsible for technical change.
The maturation process of a capitalist economy, whereby a natural progression will involve an increase in concentration, as
prescribed by Schumpeter and Steindl is also explored, as is criticism of their analyses. Finally the holistic approach to
competitive modelling, a legacy of these two economists, is expounded and challenges for the future identified. 相似文献

Knowledge and markets 总被引:6,自引:3,他引:3
Jason Potts 《Journal of Evolutionary Economics》2001,11(4):413-431
An economy is a coordinated system of distributed knowledge. Economic evolution occurs as knowledge grows and the structure
of the system changes. This paper is about the role of markets in this process. Traditionally, the theory of markets has not
been a central feature of evolutionary economics. This seems to be due to the orthodox view of markets as information-processing
mechanisms for finding equilibria. But in economic evolution markets are actually knowledge-structuring mechanisms. What then
is the relation between knowledge, information, markets and mechanisms? I argue that an evolutionary theory of markets, in
the manner of Loasby (1999), requires a clear formulation of these relations. I suggest that a conception of knowledge and
markets in terms of a graphical theory of complex systems furnishes precisely this. 相似文献

Market institutions and economic evolution 总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
Brian J. Loasby 《Journal of Evolutionary Economics》2000,10(3):297-309
Our cognitive limitations cause us to rely on institutions to guide reasonable behaviour; market institutions reduce the
costs of search, negotiation, and monitoring entailed in making single transactions. The making of markets requires an investment
of immaterial capital, the major share of which typically is provided by those who expect to be very active on one side of
the market. This `external organisation' provides producers with information for the development of new products; by simplifying
transactions it also allows consumers greater scope for developing consumption capabilities. Thus the evolution of institutions
guides the evolution of goods and services. 相似文献

Evidence of falling wages in Catholic cities and rising wages in Protestant cities between 1500 and 1750, during the spread
of literacy in the vernacular, is inconsistent with most theoretical models of economic growth. In The Protestant Ethic, Weber suggested an alternative explanation based on culture. Here, a theoretical model confirms that a small change in the
subjective cost of cooperating with strangers can generate a profound transformation in trading networks. In explaining urban
growth in early-modern Europe, specifications compatible with human-capital versions of the neoclassical model and endogenous-growth
theory are rejected in favor of a “small-world” formulation based on the Weber thesis. 相似文献

The artificial context “Target the Two” has been used in experiments to explore some of the features of routinization and
learning. Two agents must learn to coordinate their actions to achieve a common goal, without being allowed to use verbal
communication. This article reports an experiment, in which we compare the degree of routinization and the performance of
players in two treatments. Each treatment submits players to the same sequence of starting configurations, but differs in
terms of the payoff function. In the first treatment (A), the payoff is based on the number of moves required to achieve the
goal, whereas in the second treatment (B) the payoff depends on the time required for completion. We observe that (1) in treatment B subjects tend to play in a more “routinized” way and (2) treatment B reduces the time spent on play, but does not decrease the resources (the number of moves) used, relative to treatment A. 相似文献

The new geography of corporate research in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In the new ICT-based paradigm MNCs have increasingly locationally dispersed competence-creating activities. Using patent
data granted in the US to the largest European-owned electronic corporations and all the largest companies in other industries
for their ICT research in the European regions, this paper investigates the regional dispersion of such research. We find
that co-specialised electronic companies do not tend to develop related R&D in the same regional location, but non-electronic
firms undertake related ICT development in a common centre of excellence. Thus, intra-industry competition encourages the
geographical separation of co-specialised research, while inter-industry cooperation entails the co-location of related research. 相似文献
