This paper investigates the accuracy of forecasts from four dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) models for inflation, output growth and the federal funds rate using a real‐time dataset synchronized with the Fed's Greenbook projections. Conditioning the model forecasts on the Greenbook nowcasts leads to forecasts that are as accurate as the Greenbook projections for output growth and the federal funds rate. Only for inflation are the model forecasts dominated by the Greenbook projections. A comparison with forecasts from Bayesian vector autoregressions shows that the economic structure of the DSGE models which is useful for the interpretation of forecasts does not lower the accuracy of forecasts. Combining forecasts of several DSGE models increases precision in comparison to individual model forecasts. Comparing density forecasts with the actual distribution of observations shows that DSGE models overestimate uncertainty around point forecasts. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Multivariate GARCH (MGARCH) models are usually estimated under multivariate normality. In this paper, for non-elliptically distributed financial returns, we propose copula-based multivariate GARCH (C-MGARCH) model with uncorrelated dependent errors, which are generated through a linear combination of dependent random variables. The dependence structure is controlled by a copula function. Our new C-MGARCH model nests a conventional MGARCH model as a special case. The aim of this paper is to model MGARCH for non-normal multivariate distributions using copulas. We model the conditional correlation (by MGARCH) and the remaining dependence (by a copula) separately and simultaneously. We apply this idea to three MGARCH models, namely, the dynamic conditional correlation (DCC) model of Engle [Engle, R.F., 2002. Dynamic conditional correlation: A simple class of multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity models. Journal of Business and Economic Statistics 20, 339–350], the varying correlation (VC) model of Tse and Tsui [Tse, Y.K., Tsui, A.K., 2002. A multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity model with time-varying correlations. Journal of Business and Economic Statistics 20, 351–362], and the BEKK model of Engle and Kroner [Engle, R.F., Kroner, K.F., 1995. Multivariate simultaneous generalized ARCH. Econometric Theory 11, 122–150]. Empirical analysis with three foreign exchange rates indicates that the C-MGARCH models outperform DCC, VC, and BEKK in terms of in-sample model selection and out-of-sample multivariate density forecast, and in terms of these criteria the choice of copula functions is more important than the choice of the volatility models.  相似文献

We introduce a new class of stochastic volatility models with autoregressive moving average (ARMA) innovations. The conditional mean process has a flexible form that can accommodate both a state space representation and a conventional dynamic regression. The ARMA component introduces serial dependence, which results in standard Kalman filter techniques not being directly applicable. To overcome this hurdle, we develop an efficient posterior simulator that builds on recently developed precision-based algorithms. We assess the usefulness of these new models in an inflation forecasting exercise across all G7 economies. We find that the new models generally provide competitive point and density forecasts compared to standard benchmarks, and are especially useful for Canada, France, Italy, and the U.S.  相似文献

In this paper we test whether the key metals prices of gold and platinum significantly improve inflation forecasts for the South African economy. We also test whether controlling for conditional correlations in a dynamic setup, using bivariate Bayesian-Dynamic Conditional Correlation (B-DCC) models, improves inflation forecasts. To achieve this we compare out-of-sample forecast estimates of the B-DCC model to Random Walk, Autoregressive and Bayesian VAR models. We find that for both the BVAR and BDCC models, improving point forecasts of the Autoregressive model of inflation remains an elusive exercise. This, we argue, is of less importance relative to the more informative density forecasts. For this we find improved forecasts of inflation for the B-DCC models at all forecasting horizons tested. We thus conclude that including metals price series as inputs to inflation models leads to improved density forecasts, while controlling for the dynamic relationship between the included price series and inflation similarly leads to significantly improved density forecasts.  相似文献

It has been argued that volatility in nominal macroeconomic aggregates has had a negative effect on real output, in particular that such volatility contributed to slow output growth in the early 1980s. This paper reexamines the effects of volatility in nominal macroeconomic aggregates in the context of a modern simultaneous equation framework where the volatility of, nominal macroeconomic variables is modeled as the conditional variance of two variables of interest: the federal funds rate and inflation. The empirical framework is the recently developed multivariate GARCH-in-mean vector autoregressive model. We confirm evidence that inflation volatility and tight monetary policy have directly affected output growth, but find that volatility in the federal funds rate has not.  相似文献

Forecasting economic and financial variables with global VARs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper considers the problem of forecasting economic and financial variables across a large number of countries in the global economy. To this end a global vector autoregressive (GVAR) model, previously estimated by Dees, di Mauro, Pesaran, and Smith (2007) and Dees, Holly, Pesaran, and Smith (2007) over the period 1979Q1–2003Q4, is used to generate out-of-sample forecasts one and four quarters ahead for real output, inflation, real equity prices, exchange rates and interest rates over the period 2004Q1–2005Q4. Forecasts are obtained for 134 variables from 26 regions, which are made up of 33 countries and cover about 90% of the world output. The forecasts are compared to typical benchmarks: univariate autoregressive and random walk models. Building on the forecast combination literature, the effects of model and estimation uncertainty on forecast outcomes are examined by pooling forecasts obtained from different GVAR models estimated over alternative sample periods. Given the size of the modelling problem, and the heterogeneity of the economies considered–industrialised, emerging, and less developed countries–as well as the very real likelihood of possibly multiple structural breaks, averaging forecasts across both models and windows makes a significant difference. Indeed, the double-averaged GVAR forecasts perform better than the benchmark competitors, especially for output, inflation and real equity prices.  相似文献

This study compares forecasts of US international message telephone service (IMTS) traffic using several relative mean squared error statistics. The forecasts are obtained from time-series extrapolation, univariate autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), error correction and vector autoregressive models. The models are estimated on annual US IMTS outgoing traffic data for six US–Asia bilateral markets for the period 1964 to 1993. No single approach provides best forecasts. However, forecast evaluation statistics indicate that econometric models generally outperform the alternatives.  相似文献

Abstract.  This paper provides an up-to-date survey of the main theoretical developments in autoregressive conditional duration (ACD) modeling and empirical studies using financial data. First, we discuss the properties of the standard ACD specification and its extensions, existing diagnostic tests, and joint models for the arrival times of events and some market characteristics. Then, we present the empirical applications of ACD models to different types of events, and identify possible directions for future research.  相似文献

We use numerous high-frequency transaction data sets to evaluate the forecasting performances of several dynamic ordinal-response time series models with generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH). The specifications account for three components: leverage effects, in-mean effects and moving average error terms. We estimate the model parameters by developing Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms. Our empirical analysis shows that the proposed ordinal-response GARCH models achieve better point and density forecasts than standard benchmarks.  相似文献

Accurate solar forecasts are necessary to improve the integration of solar renewables into the energy grid. In recent years, numerous methods have been developed for predicting the solar irradiance or the output of solar renewables. By definition, a forecast is uncertain. Thus, the models developed predict the mean and the associated uncertainty. Comparisons are therefore necessary and useful for assessing the skill and accuracy of these new methods in the field of solar energy. The aim of this paper is to present a comparison of various models that provide probabilistic forecasts of the solar irradiance within a very strict framework. Indeed, we consider focusing on intraday forecasts, with lead times ranging from 1 to 6 h. The models selected use only endogenous inputs for generating the forecasts. In other words, the only inputs of the models are the past solar irradiance data. In this context, the most common way of generating the forecasts is to combine point forecasting methods with probabilistic approaches in order to provide prediction intervals for the solar irradiance forecasts. For this task, we selected from the literature three point forecasting models (recursive autoregressive and moving average (ARMA), coupled autoregressive and dynamical system (CARDS), and neural network (NN)), and seven methods for assessing the distribution of their error (linear model in quantile regression (LMQR), weighted quantile regression (WQR), quantile regression neural network (QRNN), recursive generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCHrls), sieve bootstrap (SB), quantile regression forest (QRF), and gradient boosting decision trees (GBDT)), leading to a comparison of 20 combinations of models.None of the model combinations clearly outperform the others; nevertheless, some trends emerge from the comparison. First, the use of the clear sky index ensures the accuracy of the forecasts. This derived parameter permits time series to be deseasonalized with missing data, and is also a good explanatory variable of the distribution of the forecasting errors. Second, regardless of the point forecasting method used, linear models in quantile regression, weighted quantile regression and gradient boosting decision trees are able to forecast the prediction intervals accurately.  相似文献

We compare a number of methods that have been proposed in the literature for obtaining h-step ahead minimum mean square error forecasts for self-exciting threshold autoregressive (SETAR) models. These forecasts are compared to those from an AR model. The comparison of forecasting methods is made using Monte Carlo simulation. The Monte-Carlo method of calculating SETAR forecasts is generally at least as good as that of the other methods we consider. An exception is when the disturbances in the SETAR model come from a highly asymmetric distribution, when a Bootstrap method is to be preferred. An empirical application calculates multi-period forecasts from a SETAR model of US gross national product using a number of the forecasting methods. We find that whether there are improvements in forecast performance relative to a linear AR model depends on the historical epoch we select, and whether forecasts are evaluated conditional on the regime the process was in at the time the forecast was made.  相似文献

Many forecasts are conditional in nature. For example, a number of central banks routinely report forecasts conditional on particular paths of policy instruments. Even though conditional forecasting is common, there has been little work on methods for evaluating conditional forecasts. This paper provides analytical, Monte Carlo and empirical evidence on tests of predictive ability for conditional forecasts from estimated models. In the empirical analysis, we examine conditional forecasts obtained with a VAR in the variables included in the DSGE model of Smets and Wouters (American Economic Review 2007; 97 : 586–606). Throughout the analysis, we focus on tests of bias, efficiency and equal accuracy applied to conditional forecasts from VAR models. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Since the introduction of the Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (ARCH) model, the literature on modeling the time-varying second-order conditional moment has become increasingly popular in the last four decades. Its popularity is partly due to its success in capturing volatility in financial time series, which is useful for modeling and predicting risk for financial assets. A natural extension of this is to model time variation in higher-order conditional moments, such as the third and fourth moments, which are related to skewness and kurtosis (tail risk). This leads to an emerging literature on time-varying higher-order conditional moments in the last two decades. This paper outlines recent developments in modeling time-varying higher-order conditional moments in the economics and finance literature. Using the Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (GARCH) framework as a foundation, this paper provides an overview of the two most common approaches for modeling time-varying higher-order conditional moments: autoregressive conditional density (ARCD) and autoregressive conditional moment (ARCM). The discussion covers both the theoretical and empirical aspects of the literature. This includes the identification of the associated skewness–kurtosis domain by using the solutions to the classical moment problems, the structural and statistical properties of the models used to model the higher-order conditional moments and the computational challenges in estimating these models. We also advocate the use of a maximum entropy density (MED) as an alternative method, which circumvents some of the issues prevalent in these common approaches.  相似文献

Forecasting the term structure of government bond yields   总被引:7,自引:1,他引:6
Despite powerful advances in yield curve modeling in the last 20 years, comparatively little attention has been paid to the key practical problem of forecasting the yield curve. In this paper we do so. We use neither the no-arbitrage approach nor the equilibrium approach. Instead, we use variations on the Nelson–Siegel exponential components framework to model the entire yield curve, period-by-period, as a three-dimensional parameter evolving dynamically. We show that the three time-varying parameters may be interpreted as factors corresponding to level, slope and curvature, and that they may be estimated with high efficiency. We propose and estimate autoregressive models for the factors, and we show that our models are consistent with a variety of stylized facts regarding the yield curve. We use our models to produce term-structure forecasts at both short and long horizons, with encouraging results. In particular, our forecasts appear much more accurate at long horizons than various standard benchmark forecasts.  相似文献

This paper compares two alternative one-day-ahead forecasts of tomorrow's federal funds rate. The first forecast is a simple random walk forecast in which the forecast of tomorrow's federal funds rate is taken to be today's federal funds rate. The second forecast is an ARIMA model forecast that was allowed to vary with changes in the Federal Reserve System's operating procedures. These two forecasts are compared in terms of their general forecast accuracy and the decision support they provide to a financial institution hypothesized to be borrowing $7 million a week in the federal funds market. Even in cases felt to be most favorable to the ARIMA forecasts, the degree of forecast accuracy and decision support superiority of the ARIMA forecasts is found to be quite small.  相似文献

This paper reviews the recent literature on conditional duration modeling in high‐frequency finance. These conditional duration models are associated with the time interval between trades, price, and volume changes of stocks, traded in a financial market. An earlier review by Pacurar provides an exhaustive survey of the first and some of the second generation conditional duration models. We consider almost all of the third‐generation and some of the second‐generation conditional duration models. Notable applications of these models and related empirical studies are discussed. The paper may be seen as an extension to Pacurar.  相似文献

In this paper, we examine the forecast accuracy of linear autoregressive, smooth transition autoregressive (STAR), and neural network (NN) time series models for 47 monthly macroeconomic variables of the G7 economies. Unlike previous studies that typically consider multiple but fixed model specifications, we use a single but dynamic specification for each model class. The point forecast results indicate that the STAR model generally outperforms linear autoregressive models. It also improves upon several fixed STAR models, demonstrating that careful specification of nonlinear time series models is of crucial importance. The results for neural network models are mixed in the sense that at long forecast horizons, an NN model obtained using Bayesian regularization produces more accurate forecasts than a corresponding model specified using the specific-to-general approach. Reasons for this outcome are discussed.  相似文献

A new framework for the joint estimation and forecasting of dynamic value at risk (VaR) and expected shortfall (ES) is proposed by our incorporating intraday information into a generalized autoregressive score (GAS) model introduced by Patton et al., 2019 to estimate risk measures in a quantile regression set-up. We consider four intraday measures: the realized volatility at 5-min and 10-min sampling frequencies, and the overnight return incorporated into these two realized volatilities. In a forecasting study, the set of newly proposed semiparametric models are applied to four international stock market indices (S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nikkei 225 and FTSE 100) and are compared with a range of parametric, nonparametric and semiparametric models, including historical simulations, generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH) models and the original GAS models. VaR and ES forecasts are backtested individually, and the joint loss function is used for comparisons. Our results show that GAS models, enhanced with the realized volatility measures, outperform the benchmark models consistently across all indices and various probability levels.  相似文献

We propose a class of observation‐driven time series models referred to as generalized autoregressive score (GAS) models. The mechanism to update the parameters over time is the scaled score of the likelihood function. This new approach provides a unified and consistent framework for introducing time‐varying parameters in a wide class of nonlinear models. The GAS model encompasses other well‐known models such as the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity, autoregressive conditional duration, autoregressive conditional intensity, and Poisson count models with time‐varying mean. In addition, our approach can lead to new formulations of observation‐driven models. We illustrate our framework by introducing new model specifications for time‐varying copula functions and for multivariate point processes with time‐varying parameters. We study the models in detail and provide simulation and empirical evidence. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
