Mathematical programming applications in educational planning

The specific aim of this article is to examine recent developments in the applications of mathematical programming techniques to problems encountered in educational planning. Applications are given for selected problems at national, state, regional and local levels of planning and the implications of this work for educational research methodology is noted. Special attention is given to applications at the microanalytic or school district level, since most applications in this domain are of recent origin and have been developed in disciplines other than education, e.g. industrial engineering, econometrics, public administration, business and operations research.Applications are discussed in light of their relationship to theoretical and empirical research on educational production functions. The final section contains some directions and implications for future research which are discussed in terms of recent developments in socio-economic and public sector planning and the emerging major research needs in educational policy planning.

Implicit markets and the demand for housing characteristics

Important methodological problems in applying Rosen's (1974) model of implicit markets to housing characteristics are inadequately addressed in the literature. This paper summarizes these methodological issues and discusses advantages and disadvantages of various means of coping with these problems in empirical applications. Structural housing characteristics demand estimates are presented, along with an assessment of their accuracy. The results generally are insensitive to specification choices, suggesting the findings are plausible.

Solution of macromodels with Hansen–Sargent robust policies: some extensions

We summarize some methods useful in formulating and solving Hansen–Sargent robust control problems, and suggest extensions to discretion and simple rules. Matlab, Octave, and Gauss software is provided. We illustrate these extensions with applications to the term structure of interest rates, the time inconsistency of optimal monetary policy, the effects of expectations on the variances of inflation and output, and on whether central banks should make their forecasts public.     

Realizing the full potential of psychometric meta-analysis for a cumulative science and practice of human resource management

This might be the most opportune time for Human Resource Management (HRM) to benefit from psychometric meta-analysis. Explosion of empirical research, often with conflicting results, hide important takeaways that can guide evidence-based applications of HRM. The science of HRM can turn to meta-analyses and meta-analytic thinking as the antidote to the so-called replication crisis afflicting social sciences in general. In this paper, we focus on issues and potential problems that may threaten the veracity and usefulness of contemporary meta-analyses in HRM. We contend that these problems must be correctly tackled for meta-analyses to realize their full potential in advancing HRM science and practice. We address the problems of identification and inclusion of all relevant effect sizes, as well as appropriate corrections for unreliability and range restriction. We offer concrete proposals to enable inclusion of unpublished, practitioner research and data in HRM meta-analyses.
