This article discusses the transformation of the Japanese consumer electronics industry since the late 1990s. Based on an analysis of the three largest watch companies (Seiko, Citizen, and Casio), it demonstrates that these firms shifted from technology-driven management to a new model focused on marketing (brand management and distribution) and upper-positioning targeting. The change has been only partial, however, as technological innovation remains the basis of branding and product development. This case study thus contributes to the discourse on the transformation of Japanese manufacturing.  相似文献

The rise of the phenomenon referred to as “Swatch Fever,” collectors' seemingly insatiable desire for Swatch watches during the late 1980s to early 1990s, can be considered an allegory for collecting behavior in general. Using the dynamic progression of Swatch Fever, this article explores what motivates consumers to engage in collecting behavior. Based on this analysis as well as the current literature on collecting, the authors examine the paradoxical nature of collecting in order to add to the understanding of collecting as a phenomenon that is both rational and irrational, deliberate and uncontrollable, cooperative and competitive, passive and aggressive, and tension producing and tension reducing. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

World demand for refractory products—heat-resisting ceramic materials used in metal refining, glass making, and other high-temperature industrial applications—will be slowing down considerably from an annual rate of 10.8 percent during 2002–07 to 3.5 percent during 2007–12. Such slower growth reflects many factors, but is due primarily to: unsettled economic conditions; better efficiencies in steelmaking (which accounts for about half of all end uses of refractories); and the preference of end-users for maintenance rather than new facilities. The four key markets or end uses for refractory materials are: iron and steelmaking; other metal-making; nonmetallic materials such as glass; and an all-other category. In 2007, world refractory demand was 38.1 million metric tons valued at $22.9 billion; the corresponding figures for 2012 are projected at about 45.2 million metric tons valued at $28.5 billion. The Asia-Pacific region accounted for about 45 percent of total weight in 2007; its share by 2012 should rise to about 69 percent, with China becoming the dominant producer and consumer of refractory materials.  相似文献

Selling as a profession and sales management as an organizational function have undergone major changes that were driven by the evolutionary journey of the marketing discipline. The extant value cocreation paradigm is recrafting the purpose of selling. This paper explores the conceptual development of a selling paradigm that is more responsible to its customers. Specifically, in Business-to-Business (B2B) context, the cost of any selling behavior that compromises customer interest could be of disastrous proportions. Building on the theoretical foundations of self-regulation and job demands-resources theory, this paper develops a conceptual model of responsible selling by integrating self-leadership literature with the emerging paradigm of value-based selling. The conceptual model outlines several research propositions for empirical validation and discusses its potential implications for sales managers and sales organizations.  相似文献

This article first presents the challenges involved in constructing consistent, timely, and reliable short-term measures of national, regional, and global industry activity. The chemical industry is used as a case study. Second, this article presents the comparison of the movement or fluctuations in industrial production indices and chemical production indices that aid in determining if production in the chemical industry can be used as a proxy for total production in an economy. The American Chemistry Council publishes chemical production regional indices for 33 key nations, regions, and subregions, all aggregated to the world total.  相似文献

The study investigates how firms adjusted their export commitment in response to the recent global financial crisis. Findings based on New Zealand wine companies suggest that firms' commitment to exporting is influenced by both their export performance achieved before the crisis and the negative effect that the crisis exerted on their subsequent export performance. These two performance‐induced influences can be further moderated by managerial attitude toward exporting and managers' perceptions of export market uncertainty. Theoretically, the study builds on the behavioral theory of the firm and extends the past performance–strategy relationship to the situation of exporting in a financial crisis.  相似文献

伴随着世界贸易格局的多极化发展,尤其在制造业层面,自由与多样化分工的产业制造与要素资源的流动特性,正逐步取代传统贸易体系。在推行制造业升级与新兴产业发展的背景下,我国制造业如何在全球价值链体系下实现价值链地位的攀升,得到了学界的广泛关注。基于全球价值链核算理论,利用世界投入产出数据库,测算我国制造业生产长度,研究发现:我国制造业整体在全球价值链中参与度持续增加;技术密集型制造业生产长度要高于劳动密集型;从制造业生产所创造的增加值流向来看,技术密集型行业生产专业化程度有所提升,而劳动密集型行业则相对较弱。在数字化发展背景下,提出创新制造业技术,引领制造业服务化转型等对策建议。  相似文献

Despite the proliferation of Internet usage both by retailers and by retail customers, little is know about the impact of the Internet on the retail salesperson's ability to add value to customer encounters. This article identifies and discusses Internet-related factors that potentially enable and/or limit the salesperson's successful execution of the personal selling process and also considers the effects of limitations of Internet retailing on achievement of desired retailer performance. The growth of socially responsible investment (SRI) on public financial markets has drawn considerable academic attention over the last decade. Discarding from the previous literature, this article sets up to analyze the Private Equity channel, which is shown to have the potentiality to foster sustainable practices in unlisted companies. The fast integration of the environmental, social and governance issues by mainstream Private Equity investors is unveiled and appears to have benefited from the maturation of SRI on public financial markets and the impetus of large conventional actors. Hypotheses on the characteristics and drivers of this movement are proposed and tested on a unique database covering the French Private Equity industry in 2011. Empirical findings support that Private Equity socially responsible investing is characterized by investor engagement and strategically driven by a need for new value creation sources, increased risk management and differentiation. In particular, results show that independent funds, which need to attract investors, are more likely than captive funds to develop socially responsible practices. Evolution of the movement and future research paths are proposed.  相似文献

我国建筑业走过了资源驱动、投资驱动的产业发展阶段,具有了相当的经济与技术基础,但目前产品供大于求,竞争激烈,大部分没有进入创新驱动产业阶段,需求增长趋缓、宏观调控下发展速度下降.同时,我国对外投资严重落后于利用外资,服务贸易创汇严重落后于货物创汇,以对外工程承包为主体的建筑业所创外汇与经济大国、货物贸易大国、建筑业大国极不相称.大力支持以对外工程承包为主体的建筑业走出国门,推动建筑业的继续高速增长及带动产品和劳务的出口创汇是经济与出口贸易增长的现实和长期选择.  相似文献

目前国有企业的出售机制大多采用管理层收购,并且在具体实施中大多采用政府与企业的在任管理层双方非公开议价的方式进行。收购过程不透明,且收购价格过低,这是人们对管理层收购的两大质疑之处。允许管理层参加拍卖是解决这两方面问题的有效途径。因此,拍卖是国有企业的最优出售机制。考察了四种标准拍卖方式在各种环境下的效率,以及不同拍卖方式对政府出售企业收入的影响,并确定最优拍卖。  相似文献

The outsourcing of medical research has become a strategic imperative in the global pharmaceutical industry. Spurred by the challenges of competition, the need for speed in drug development, and increasing domestic costs, pharmaceutical companies across the globe continue to outsource critical parts of their value chain activities, namely contract clinical research and drug testing, to sponsors across the globe, typically into emerging markets. While it is clear that important ethical issues arise with this practice, unraveling moral responsibility and the allocation of responsibility is not so clear, considering that contracts, by their very definition transfer responsibility from the principal to the agent. This research provides a framework for exploring some of the ethical issues, including attributions of moral responsibility associated with Contract Medical Research. Using a theory of strategic and moral behavior, the research shows that both clients and sponsors in contract research have individual and collective responsibility to ensure that due care and diligence is exercised in the performance of clinical research. The research suggests some guidelines for stakeholder action.  相似文献
