Fundraising as a theatrical event

This paper introduces and elaborates the notion of fundraising as a theatrical event. By exploring the theatrical setup, as well as social context, of two elite fundraising events that took place at almost the same time and place and for the same cause, the authors disentangle different components that are at play in a fundraising event. The paper shows that a fundraising event needs to align sensory, artistic, and symbolic theatrical levels to convey the desirability of the fundraising cause. In addition, not only the economic but also the social and cultural capitals of the hosts of the event may be of relevance to the fundraising.     

Career attitudes and success of managers: the impact of chance event,protean, and traditional careers

We propose a career model that focuses on the antecedents of career success for managers and professionals within organizations. The model includes constructs rarely represented in the literature, and is based on conservation of resources theory. Testing our model with a sample of 545 managers, we found significant effect of positive and negative social capital, perception of organizational politics, professional vitality, and protean career attitude on internal and external career success, mediated by organizational commitment and met expectations, and moderated by chance event effect. This original contribution includes incorporating new constructs and concentrates upon factors enabling support for successful careers.

Project management's ultimate measurement is the successful integration of new technology into the culture of the organization. The first and most crucial step in any implementation is the specification and subsequent selection of the equipment or technology. It is important to make the "right" choice--one where the technology provides value-added services to the users so it helps them do their jobs better now and in the future. Making a "wrong" choice can severely impact even the best-managed implementation (and project managers' careers). There is simply no margin for error--so getting it right the first time is not merely an option, it is a prerequisite for success.

The Cox–Aalen model for recurrent‐event data with a dependent terminal event

Recurrent events with a dependent terminal event arise frequently in a wide variety of fields. In this paper, we propose a new joint model to analyze these data and model the dependence between recurrent and terminal events through shared gamma frailty. Specifically, a Cox–Aalen rate frailty model is specified for the recurrent event, and an additive hazards frailty model is specified for the terminal event. An estimating equation approach is developed for the parameters in the joint model, and the asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators are established. Simulation studies demonstrate that the proposed estimators perform well with finite samples. An application to a medical cost study of chronic heart failure patients is illustrated.     

Testing a model of long-term alliance success.

The remarkable consistency of buyer and supplier perspectives was the most striking feature of this research. Although significant differences did exist, the dominant perspective illustrated a strong cohesion between partners. AS such, it would appear that these alliances do represent "best in class" relationships and thus may provide valuable insight for academics and practitioners into what makes alliances succeed--or fail.

Developing personal attachment to a physically active charity event

• Given the commonplace of physically active charity events, it is increasingly important for charitable organizations to understand how participants form personal attachments to their events so that marketers can maximize the amount of funds raised and achieve an attractive return on marketing expenditures. This exploratory study examines the ways in which participants at a walk/run for multiple sclerosis form personal attachments to the event. The limited work that has been conducted in this area has focused on cycling events, which may not include all types of participants (e.g., people with physical restrictions tied to the cause) and their experiences. Data were collected through an online questionnaire that employed open‐ended qualitative questions. The findings suggest three ways in which participants form attachments to the event, including being known as a fundraiser, aligning self and cause, and developing social bonds.

Manufacturing backshoring: a systematic literature review

The purpose of this research is to review and analyze in a systematic manner the current research published in peer-reviewed international scientific journals on the backshoring of manufacturing. We identify 20 articles published from 2009 to early 2016. We classify and discuss the literature according to publication year, research methodology, industry type, and firm size. Using content analysis, we identify 25 factors that are relevant for backshoring decision-making and categorize them into seven clusters that influence the decision to move manufacturing back. These clusters are: cost, quality, time and flexibility, access to skills and knowledge, risks, market, and other factors. Further, we provide a research agenda for further research on the phenomenon of moving manufacturing back.

Project success as a topic in project management journals

This article highlights the characteristics of articles on project success published between 1986 and 2004 in the Project Management Journal (PMJ) and the International Journal of Project Management (IJPM). The analysis covers references, concepts like project management success, project success, success criteria, and success factors; features of the samples, data collection, and analysis techniques used; and professional disciplines. The results show that research on project success is characterized by diversity except in epistemological and methodological perspectives. The article suggests a shift to project, portfolio, and program success and concludes with a discussion on the traditional state of the research, criticizes its assumptions, and offers alternative metaphors and recommendations for future research.

Measuring program success

Growth in the use of programs has led to a requirement of understanding what constitutes program success. A measurement construct for program success, which comprises four dimensions—delivery capability, organizational capability, marketing capability, and innovative capability—was developed based on 172 responses to a web‐based questionnaire to program managers. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and canonical correlation analysis were applied to test for the relationship between program success and program context. Results showed that the measurement construct for program success was stable over different types of program contexts. It provides a tool for further investigation into program success assessment.
