This paper is a first attempt at examining the impact that Information Technology (IT) and enterprise reform have on the productivity of Chinese manufacturing firms by using large-scale firm level datasets from 1995 to 2002. It is found that enterprise reforms captured by the entry and exit of firms have had a positive impact on aggregated productivity growth. In addition, IT plays a relatively important role in the productivity performance of post-reform enterprises, as opposed to enterprises which are not affected by major restructuring in the course of Chinese state-owned enterprise reforms.  相似文献

This paper quantitatively assesses the impact of falling foreign direct investment (FDI) barriers on individual firms and its implications for intra-industry reallocation and aggregate productivity. We calibrate the firm-heterogeneity model of Eaton et al. (Econometrica 79(5):1453–1498, 2011) to match micro-level data on Japanese multinational firms facing fixed and variable costs of foreign production. We demonstrate that the calibrated model can be used to replicate the entry and sales patterns of Japanese multinationals. Counterfactual simulations show that declining FDI barriers lead to a disproportionate expansion of foreign production by more efficient firms relative to less efficient firms. A hypothetical 20 % reduction in FDI barriers is found to generate up to a 26.8 % improvement in industry-level productivity through global market-share reallocations within the industry. Compared with fixed entry barriers, reallocation effects and productivity gains are larger for a reduction of variable costs of foreign production.  相似文献

We observe a substantial increase in foreign ownership in Sweden in the 1990s. Did that have any effect on relative demand for skilled labor? Has technology transfers—often associated with inward FDI—led to an increased demand for skills due to skilled-biased technical change? Are there any grounds for the concerns in the public Swedish debate that more skilled activities have been moved to other countries where the headquarters are located? Estimating relative labor demand at the firm level and using propensity score matching with difference-in-difference estimation, we obtain support for that relative demand for skilled labor tend to rise in non-multinationals (non-MNEs)—but not in multinationals (MNEs)—that become foreign-owned. Other interesting findings are that larger presence of foreign MNEs in an industry appears to have a positive impact on the relative demand for skills in Swedish MNEs within the same industry and that the elasticity of substitution between skilled and less-skilled labor seems to be lower in MNEs than in non-MNEs.  相似文献

Export Behavior and Productivity Growth: Evidence from Italian Manufacturing Firms. — This paper provides econometric evidence supporting the hypothesis that exporting implies learning effects. Learning-by-exporting is modeled as a change, induced by export behavior, in the stochastic process governing firms’ productivity. Empirically, this is implemented by specifying cross-section regressions of labor productivity growth on measures of export behavior, controlling for past productivity growth and other firms’ characteristics. Using a sample of Italian manufacturing firms, it is found that exporters do not exhibit faster productivity growth. Nevertheless, growth in value added per worker has a positive and significant relation with firms’ export intensity. In other words, only firms substantially involved in exporting have a significantly higher rate of productivity growth. This result suggests that learning-by-exporting is by no means simply the outcome of the presence in the export market.  相似文献

This paper empirically investigates two dimensions of changes in firm behavior and performance before and after foreign direct investment (FDI). The first dimension is the difference between vertical and horizontal FDI. The second dimension is the effect of outward FDI on firms’ production and non-production activities in the home country. In our careful empirical analysis we use the propensity score matching method to show that the impact of outward FDI differs by dimension, that is, by FDI type and firms’ production and non-production activities. In particular, while horizontal FDI increases demand for non-production workers, vertical FDI increases demand for skilled production workers.  相似文献

Despite attempts to induce strong competitiveness in African manufacturing firms, poor productivity performances continue to hinder their ability to operate successfully in international markets. This paper argues that, while many plausible explanations can be put forward for this failing, analysis of the firms' social and institutional contexts can provide useful insights into why they have continued to perform badly. This paper examines productivity differences between internationally trading and non-trading firms using data on a sample of firms from 19 sub-Saharan African countries. The paper provides the first evidence of whether exporters, importers and two-way traders perform better than non-traders, and whether there are differences in performance between different types of trading firms in sub-Saharan Africa. Our results indicate that exporters, importers and two-way traders perform better than non-exporters, non-importers and non-two-way traders. We further find that two-way traders perform better than importers only or exporters only, results largely consistent with recent results for other countries and regions. Considering information on export starters, continuers and exiters we also present some evidence suggesting that there is no significant difference in performance between export continuers and starters.  相似文献

This paper examines the effect of foreign direct investment in Indonesian manufacturing on wages in locally owned Indonesian manufacturing plants. The issue is examined in a cross section of Indonesian manufacturing industries and provinces in one of the few years for which data on worker characteristics were available. Wages in locally owned plants were high in industries and industries within provinces with large foreign presence. Since the foreign plants also pay higher wages than locally owned ones, the two factors together imply that higher foreign presence raises the general wage level in a province and industry. JEL no. This paper first examines the rapid growth and changing composition of manufactured exports in Indonesia and Thailand, highlighting the rapid growth of office and computer machinery and electric machinery, somewhat slower growth of non-electric and transportation machinery, as well as the low growth of previously large exports of textiles apparel. Second, the important contributions of foreign multinational enterprises (MNEs) to export growth in the machinery industries, particularly in electric, office, and computing machinery, are documented. Third, the paper describes trade policies in all these industries in some detail, emphasizing how low protection was a key facilitator of rapid export growth in the MNEs that dominated the electric, office, and computing machinery industry, while high protection reduced incentives to export among MNEs in the transportation machinery industry.  相似文献

This paper investigates the effects of both R&D spillovers and trade patterns on productivity in Korean manufacturing, using industry-level data. The results show that domestic and foreign R&D capital stocks played an important R&D in improving the total factor productivity of Korean manufacturing. Moreover, productivity is higher in export industries and the more open industries, and the effects of foreign R&D capital are stronger in the industries with large import shares or large intra-industry trade shares. This paper examines the determinants of productivity in Japanese manufacturing industries, looking particularly at the impact of product market competition on productivity. Using a newly available panel data on around ten thousand firms in Japanese manufacturing for the years 1994–2000, I show that competition, as measured by lower level of industrial price–cost margin, enhances productivity growth, controlling for a broad range of industrial and firm-specific characteristics. Moreover, I suggest that market power, as measured by either individual firm's price–cost margin or market share, has negative impact on productivity level of R & D performing firms. J. Japanese Int. Efficiency and productivity analyses of Indonesian manufacturing industries   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
This study estimates the technical efficiencies and total factor productivity (TFP) growths in food, textile, chemical and metal products industries from 1993 to 2000 in Indonesia by using the stochastic frontier model. Furthermore, the determinants of inefficiency are also analyzed and TFP growth is decomposed into technological progress, a scale component, and efficiency growth. The results reveal that the food, textile, chemical and metal products sectors are on average 50.79%, 47.89%, 68.65% and 68.91% technically efficient, respectively. It is noted that ownership contributed to technical inefficiencies in the food sector; location and size contributed to technical inefficiencies in the textile sector, whereas size, ownership and age contributed to inefficiencies in the chemical and metal products sectors. We note that productivity in food, textile, and metal products sectors decreased at the rate of 2.73%, 0.26%, and 1.65%, respectively, but increased at a rate of 0.5% in the chemical sector. The decomposition of TFP growth indicates that the growths are driven positively by technical efficiency changes and negatively by technological progress in all four sectors.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Produktivit?t ausl?ndischer und inl?ndischer Unternehmen in der indischen Industrie. — In diesem Aufsatz wird untersucht, ob die ausl?ndischen Betriebe in Indien produktiver arbeiten als die einheimischen. Es zeigt sich, da\ in den meisten Industriezweigen, in denen ausl?ndische Unternehmen t?tig waren, die Kapital- sowie Gesamtproduktivit?t für die ausl?ndischen Unternehmen h?her war als für die einheimischen Unternehmen. Die durchgeführten Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks Tests haben die Null-Hypothese zugunsten der alternativen Hypothese zurückgewiesen, da\ die Unterschiede sowohl im Falle der Kapitalproduktivit?t als auch der Gesamtproduktivit?t statistisch signifikant sind. Gemessen an den gewichteten Durchschnittswerten der verarbeitenden Industrie insgesamt war die Kapitalproduktivit?t der ausl?ndischen Unternehmen um 60 vH und die Gesamtproduktivit?t um 55 vH h?her als die der einheimischen indischen Unternehmen. Diese Produktivit?tsdifferenzen sind jedoch auf mehrere Gründe und nicht allein auf die von ihnen angewandten unterschiedlichen Technologien zurückzuführen.
Résumé La productivité des entreprises étrangères et locales dans l’industrie indienne. — L’article examine si les entreprises étrangères en Inde travaillent plus productives que les entreprises locales. Il se montre que dans la plupart des secteurs industriels, dans lesquels les entreprises étrangères agissaient, la productivité de capitaux et la productivité totale étaient plus hautes pour les entreprises étrangères que pour les entreprises locales. Les tests faits (Wilcoxon matched-pairs signedranks) ont rejeté l’hypothèse nulle en faveur de l’hypothèse alternative, que les différences sont statistiquement significatives dans le cas de la productivité de capitaux aussi bien que de la productivité totale. Mesurée aux valeurs moyennes pondérées de l’industrie manufacturière totale, la productivité de capitaux et la productivité totale des entreprises étrangères excédaient celles des entreprises locales de 60 pourcent respectivement 55 pourcent. Ces différences de productivité cependant ont plusieurs raisons et ne peuvent pas être expliquées seulement avec les technologies différentes appliquées par les entreprises.

Resumen La productividad de empresas extranjeras y nacionales en la industria india. — En este artículo se investiga, si las empresas extranjeras en la India trabajan en forma más productiva que las nacionales. Se mostró, que en la mayoría de las ramas industriales donde operaban empresas extranjeras, la productividad del capital era mayor en las empresas extranjeras que en las nacionales. Las pruebas de rangos se?alados de pares semejantes de Wilcoxon efectuadas rechazaron la hipótesis nula a favor de la hipótesis alternativa, que las diferencias tanto en la productividad del capital como en la productividad general son estadísticamente significativas. Medidas por medio de los valores promedio ponderados de la industria manufacturera en conjunto, la productividad del capital de las empresas extranjeras fue en un 60% y la productividad total en un 55% mayor que la de las empresas nacionales indias. Estas diferencias en la productividad se deben, sin embargo, a diferentes causas y no solo a las tecnologías diferentes empleadas por ellas.

Innovation and exporting: evidence from Spanish manufacturing firms   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
This paper investigates the relationship between innovation and the export behavior of firms using data from a representative panel of Spanish firms over 1991–2002. It presents a simple theoretical model of the firm decision to export and innovate that guides the econometric analysis. Consistent with the predictions of the theoretical model, the econometric results suggest a positive effect of firm innovation on the probability of participation in export markets. The results further reveal the heterogeneous effects of different types of innovations on the firm export participation. In particular, product upgrading appears to have a larger effect on the firm export participation than the introduction of cost-saving innovations. These findings are robust to firm unobserved heterogeneity, dynamic specifications, and to the use of instrumental variables to control for the potential endogeneity between innovation and exporting.  相似文献

In this paper we examine empirically the effect of market competition on firm productivity improvements using data drawn from the Japanese manufacturing sector. We find that a non-linear relationship between competition and productivity growth induced by R&D activity as suggested by Aghion et al. (2005) holds for Japanese manufacturing firms. We also show that greater market competition widens technology differences across firms, and firms facing more intense competition are more productive than other firms. Our empirical results imply that productivity improvement through R&D activity depends on not only a competitive environment but also technological differences between firms.  相似文献

We investigate the effects of bank distress on the productivity of borrowing firms by using data on listed companies in the Japanese manufacturing industry during the 1990s. We find that deterioration in the financial health of banks, which is measured by a decline in the capital-asset ratio, decreased the productivity of their borrowers during the period of the severe financial crisis (FY1997–1998). Our finding empirically confirms the theoretical view that an increase in financial friction negatively affects the productivity of the corporate sector.  相似文献

This paper examines the relationship between corporate governance and productivity performance, focusing on family ownership and capital structure. Paying particular attention to chaebols, or large business groups with entrenched family control, diversified business structure, and heavy debt-dependence, we find the positive relationship between family ownership concentration and productivity performance to be much stronger in chaebol firms than in non-chaebol firms. Moreover, high debt reliance (or low equity–asset ratio) is shown to be negatively related to productivity performance in non-chaebol firms but positively in chaebol firms. J. Japanese Int. This study uses a market structure framework to analyze the presence of black-owned businesses in manufacturing sectors of the U.S. economy in 1972. Tobit analysis reveals that black-owned firms tend to be concentrated in those industries with a relatively large small-business presence. High advertising expenditures are a significant barrier to black presence in a given industry. The amount of government purchases from an industry is found to have no significant relationship to black presence.  相似文献
