This article outlines a development strategy for the next 30 years, with income targets. It calls for a new type of “civil rights” leadership that has a managerial, problem solving attitude. It offers a set of objectives that emphasize internal discipline.     

Nea presidential address, 1990: Africa,the development challenge of the 1990s

Much of Africa has been excluded from the considerable social and economic progress made in most regions of the world over the past several decades. Disheartening trends in Africa include budget and trade deficits, debt accumulation, inflation, overvalued currency and foreign exchange shortages. However, about half of African nations have courageously implemented structural adjustment programs since the early 1980s. The author examines the economic problems facing Africa and builds a case for responding to the crisis, proposing efforts to increase donor support and coordination and encouraging sustainable adjustment. She strongly advocates research leading to a more productive dialogue with policymakers.     

Nea presidential address, 1991: Sixteenth-century European expansion and the economic decline of Africa (in honor of Walter Rodney)

Prior to the sixteenth century, the Indian Ocean trading network was one of the wealthiest commercial regions in the world. It included states of East Africa, the Arabian peninsula, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, China and Japan. By circumnavigating Africa, Portugal was the first European nation to gain access to the region. Through the exercise of naval superiority, blockading of strategic shipping lanes, imposition of duties and expulsion of Swahili and Muslim merchants, Portugal exercised a mercantile monopoly which ultimately led to the region’s rapid economic decline. Using rare historical documents from Po rtugal and Africa, this study traces the effects of Portuguese expansion on the economies of East Africa and trade in the Indian Ocean.     

NEA presidential address, 1992: Policy issues in the postsecondary education of African Americans

Few goods and services are as important to socioeconomic outcomes as education. Participation rates of African Americans in postsecondary education are much lower than those for whites. The disparities in college attendance and graduation rates have potentially grave consequences for African Americans and for the larger society. This article addresses some of the policy influences that determine educational outcomes for this population subgroup and raises some of the issues that should be addressed if proportionate participation rates are to be generated.     

普通高等学校后勤服务社会化改革刍议

一是目前高校后勤服务仍沿用传统的“一体化”模式,即：每个学校行政管理部门均设有后勤管理处,先例除教学工作以外所有的后勤服务职能,既是管理者,又骒执行者,校领导既要管教学工作,又要抽出大部分的精力和时间来管理后勤服务工作,必然顾比失彼,影响学校的正常教育工作,影响教学质量,由于目前的后勤服务管理是行政式管理,缺乏经营管理,缺乏成本核算,容易造成大量资源的亲置与浪费。     

关怀:增强高校德育实效性的合理选择

提升高校德育实效性是不断增强和改进高校德育的关键,也是高校德育工作者必须严肃思考和面对的问题。在课堂教学过程中,老师和学生作为最重要的活动主体,他们的关系和谐与否直接影响教学活动能否顺利进行。与此同时,教师和学生也是教学活动顺利进行的重要载体,因此,构建良性和谐的师生关系变的至关重要。以诺丁斯的关怀理论为指导,通过确立高校德育关怀教育新理念,构建高校德育关怀教学的合理路径,从而达到增强高校德育实效性的目的。

国际化和现代化是我国高校发展的两个维度,这需要高校的行政效能与之相匹配。行政部门是否能够提供与国际一流大学相当的服务,能否充分利用现代科技促进行政部门的办公效能极为关键。SVN系统具有强大的在线文件共享和互动功能,通过差异存储机制在有效节省存储空间的同时提供版本差异回溯,解决版本差异对比、责任归属、资源共享与同步等问题,因此,SVN系统在实现高校各级机关与人员之间的文件共享和互动方面具有更加便捷的优点,其在进一步挖掘信息化环境下的高校办公自动化潜力方面有着显著的适用性和可行性。文章就SVN系统在高校行政管理工作中的应用进行了研究与分析,旨在进一步促进SVN系统在我国高校中的普及。     

高校在毕业生就业中的宏微观作用发挥研究

高校毕业生就业已是广受关注的社会问题。首先,文章从社会环境、教育制度、家庭以及毕业生自身角度分析了高校毕业生就业难的原因;然后,从宏观和微观两个层面,探讨高校在氛围营造、就业服务、毕业生就业能力提升方面所起到的积极作用。文章就提升毕业生就业能力方面,从引导学生树立主体意识、创新培养模式、加快课程体系改革3个方面进行阐述。     

高校大型多功能演播系统的设计与应用

伴随多媒体技术发展,教学改革和校园文化发展的要求,大型多功能演播系统的建设已经成为高校发展必须考虑的一个重要因素,多功能演播室在课件制作、互动教学、校园文化宣传以及校企合作等方面发挥了重要的作用。文章以演播室的应用研究为出发点,分析了演播系统设计原则、设计原理,提出了一个初步的大型多功能演播室的建设方案,包括多路视音频切换系统、虚拟演播室系统、媒体资产管理系统、非线性编辑系统、流媒体直播点播系统、舞美灯光设计等6个子系统。     

院校科研团队创新发展的认识

院校是人才培养的摇篮,科研团队作为院校科研的核心力量,对提升院校综合竞争力而言至关重要。当前由于历史问题、理念滞后、文化因素等原因,院校科研团队建设存在人员构成单一、团队凝聚力不足等问题,文章认为可以通过优化团队组织结构、建立完善的管理机制等促进团队创新发展。
