Economic crises and unemployment in Russia

This article considers changes in the number of unemployed individuals in conjunction with the dynamics of the production volume in Russia in 1991–2015. An assessment has been given for the quantitative relationship between crisis declines in production and the number of unemployed individuals. Long-term trends determining the dynamics of unemployment under the effect of direct factors of economic growth (labor resources, fixed capital, and scientific and technical progress) have been analyzed.

Economic Integration for Development in Eastern and Southern Africa: Assessment and Prospects

Abstract: In this paper we discuss regional economic integration schemes in Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA), their theoretical basis, current status and the actual and potential efforts to transform them into meaningful instruments for cross-border socio-economic change. This is done in the context of the changing regional dynamics in Southern Africa. (JEL: 055; FIS). Prospects for electricity generation and electrification in Russia till 2030

The results of modeling Russia’s electricity generation and electrification until 2030 are presented. Prospects were made out for two scenarios of socioeconomic development in relation to the dynamics of electricity generation and related industries of the country’s energy system. Electrification and energy generation/consumption levels are assessed together with installed power-plant capacities and greenhouse gas (GNG) emissions to the atmosphere. The consequences of expected risks arising from the possible prolongation of the Kyoto Protocol are analyzed.     

Korean Economic Developments and Prospects

South Korea's economic success is well-documented. It shows that a country can leap from being one of the poorest in the world to one of the richest (an OECD member) in just one generation. This paper first reviews the broad literature, both in English and Korean, on Korean economic developments and the major contributing factors over the last 33 years (1963–95). It then attempts to shed some light on the prospects for the Korean economy. Major contributing factors for Korea's rapid economic development include a high accumulation of physical and human capital, a high saving rate, an export-led development strategy, state intervention in the economy, efficient management and conducive culture. The prospects of the Korean economy appear bright but it would be difficult for other developing countries to emulate the Korean model.

The Impact of the Fuel and Energy Complex on the Economic Development of Russia

Using input-output analysis, the article considers possible ways to use the potential of the fuel and energy complex to implement structural and technological modernization of the Russian economy. Positive effects from changing the operational mode of the fuel and energy complex towards a solvent consumer of competitive domestic products in the context of import substitution processes, as well as a source of relatively cheap energy sources for domestic producers, are estimated.

冷战结束后,经济外交凭借经济性、和平式和高效率的特点,被许多国家、政府和组织运用到对外政策当中。中俄两国在发展国内经济和摆脱国际经济困境的双重考验下,选择和采用了经济外交,并不断扩展和充实经济外交的目标。经济外交为两国经贸关系的发展提供了机遇和挑战,而中俄经贸关系的深入发展也促进了两国经济外交战略目标的实现。但从对外贸易的角度来看,尽管中俄两国在彼此经济外交战略中的地位很重要,且这种重要性有进一步上升的趋势,但并不居于首要地位,经济外交仅是两国处理国家关系的一个手段,是总体外交的一个组成部分。同时,一些现实因素也影响着两国运用经济外交发展两国经贸关系。

China＇s Economic Prospects and Sino-US Economic Relations

A better comprehension of the mixed sentiment in the rest of world towards the rapid rise of the Chinese economy will depend on the understanding of some key features of the Chinese economy, such as those associated with its size, structure and institution. To further sustain its high growth, China is facing more challenges than it has encountered in the past 2 decades, including a gamut of material constraints. Although polices and technological progress might alleviate many of these constraints, the ultimate solution will still lie in continued institutional reform. China's recent move towards a more flexible exchange rate regime is in line with its broad reform and in accordance with the progress of its development. However, such a move will have limited immediate effects on the prodigious US trade deficit, which itself is a problem rooted in the flawed international reserve system, far beyond a Sino‐US trade issue. The paper elucidates the problems of market land turnover in the Russian Federation. It analyzes the dynamics of the main types of transactions and areas involved into them at the land market of the country. The differentiation in the prices for state and municipal lands depending on the factors influencing land supply and demand is determined. The special attention is given to lands with agricultural destination.

Economic conditions for the long-term development of metallurgy in Russia

Macroeconomic conditions define the effectiveness of the forecast variants of the metallurgical industry’s development. It is shown in the article that the results of the work of the Russian metallurgical industry in the 2000s were a consequence of changing conditions in the functioning of enterprises. An analysis of the principal factors defining the competitiveness of the metallurgical industry (raw material base, metal demand, and investment potential of development) is presented.     

The Philippines: Economic Developments and Prospects

The recent acceleration of economic growth in the Philippines is remarkable, especially in the context of the dramatic slide in its economic position relative to neighbouring East Asian economies since the early 1960s. It has stimulated discussion–both locally and overseas–of the contributing influences and of the economy's ability to sustain the growth momentum. This paper reviews the relevant literature, focusing on the following factors: political stability, macroeconomic balance, microeconomic efficiency, and equity. Past experience with boom-bust cycles warrants a cautious view of the longer-term prospects of the Philippine economy. Among other major obstacles, the poor state of public finance and low domestic saving rate stand in the way of a stable and self-sustained growth. In some respects, however, the recent performance holds promise as only the first step in the path being taken towards more rapid economic growth that is sustainable and equitable.
