To support and promote the interests of communtites within the City. To act as the Ceremonial head of Brighton & Hove City Council. My principal accountabilities are: To acqrire and maintian knowledge and understanding of Brighton & Hove and its communities, and the economic , social and cultural history and life of the City. To represent the City without party political partisanship.

‘Our daily bread’: Maurice Potron,from Catholicism to mathematical economics

Abstract

Maurice Potron (1872–1942) is a French Jesuit and mathematician whose main source of inspiration in economics is the encyclical Rerum Novarum. With virtually no knowledge in economic theory, he wrote down a linear model of production in which he formalized the notions of just prices and just wages. As early as 1911, he used the Perron–Frobenius theorem to prove the existence of a positive solution and established a duality result between the quantity side and the price side of the model. He returned to economics in the 1930s, but in both periods he failed to make a lasting impression upon economists.

The Positive Research of Human Capital Structure and the Disparity Problem of Area in Our Country

The factors that influence the economic growth are various and complicated.This paper has especially probed into calculating and impact on regional economic growth of the human capital structure. First, on the basis of considering human capital quality, we use Gini coefficient law to calculate human capital structure coefficient of our country＇s each province （municipal or district）; Second, according to the result of calculating of human capital structure coefficient, considering input of material capital, average education level and so on at the same time, we set up regional economic growth model and use the panel data to examine the model. The result indicates the human capital structure coefficient of each province （municipal or district）in inverse proportion to economic growth （- 0. 108）. The last is the conclusion of this text.     

“This Marvelous Symbol of Our Identity”: The Czech Republic in American Practical Geopolitics

This paper analyses the practical geopolitical representations of the Czech Republic in American presidential materials between 1989 and 2009. Using structured discourse analysis, it highlights the impact of identity construction on policymaking and draws on critical geopolitics to highlight conceptualisations and geopolitical representations connected with the Czech Republic over four American presidential administrations. The article demonstrates the power of practical geopolitics in constructing images and cementing certain preconceived notions about a given place. Five main representations are identified, presenting the Czech Republic as: interconnected with American identity, a symbol of democracy and freedom, a victim of tyranny, a loyal ally, and as interchangeable with other countries in Central Europe. The article concludes that such multifaceted conceptualisations not only define the United States’ relationship with the Czech Republic, but also have strategic value. These conceptualisations helped to justify certain American policies and to reinforce a particular interpretation of American identity.
