Many estimation methods of truncated and censored regression models such as the maximum likelihood and symmetrically censored least squares (SCLS) are sensitive to outliers and data contamination as we document. Therefore, we propose a semiparametric general trimmed estimator (GTE) of truncated and censored regression, which is highly robust but relatively imprecise. To improve its performance, we also propose data-adaptive and one-step trimmed estimators. We derive the robust and asymptotic properties of all proposed estimators and show that the one-step estimators (e.g., one-step SCLS) are as robust as GTE and are asymptotically equivalent to the original estimator (e.g., SCLS). The finite-sample properties of existing and proposed estimators are studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations.  相似文献

Two-stage-least-squares (2SLS) estimates are biased towards the probability limit of OLS estimates. This bias grows with the degree of over-identification and can generate highly misleading results. In this paper we propose two simple alternatives to 2SLS and limited-information-maximum-likelihood (LIML) estimators for models with more instruments than endogenous regressors. These estimators can be interpreted as instrumental variables procedures using an instrument that is independent of disturbances even in finite samples. Independence is achieved by using a ‘leave-one-out’ jackknife-type fitted value in place of the usual first stage equation. The new estimators are first-order equivalent to 2SLS but with finite-sample properties superior, in terms of bias and coverage rate of confidence intervals, compared to those of 2SLS and similar to those of LIML, when there are many instruments. Instrumental variable estimation in the presence of many moment conditions   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper develops shrinkage methods for addressing the “many instruments” problem in the context of instrumental variable estimation. It has been observed that instrumental variable estimators may behave poorly if the number of instruments is large. This problem can be addressed by shrinking the influence of a subset of instrumental variables. The procedure can be understood as a two-step process of shrinking some of the OLS coefficient estimates from the regression of the endogenous variables on the instruments, then using the predicted values of the endogenous variables (based on the shrunk coefficient estimates) as the instruments. The shrinkage parameter is chosen to minimize the asymptotic mean square error. The optimal shrinkage parameter has a closed form, which makes it easy to implement. A Monte Carlo study shows that the shrinkage method works well and performs better in many situations than do existing instrument selection procedures.  相似文献

Central limit theorems are developed for instrumental variables estimates of linear and semiparametric partly linear regression models for spatial data. General forms of spatial dependence and heterogeneity in explanatory variables and unobservable disturbances are permitted. We discuss estimation of the variance matrix, including estimates that are robust to disturbance heteroscedasticity and/or dependence. A Monte Carlo study of finite-sample performance is included. In an empirical example, the estimates and robust and non-robust standard errors are computed from Indian regional data, following tests for spatial correlation in disturbances, and nonparametric regression fitting. Some final comments discuss modifications and extensions.  相似文献

We propose a class of distribution-free rank-based tests for the null hypothesis of a unit root. This class is indexed by the choice of a reference densityg, which need not coincide with the unknown actual innovation density f. The validity of these tests, in terms of exact finite-sample size, is guaranteed, irrespective of the actual underlying density, by distribution-freeness. Those tests are locally and asymptotically optimal under a particular asymptotic scheme, for which we provide a complete analysis of asymptotic relative efficiencies. Rather than stressing asymptotic optimality, however, we emphasize finite-sample performances, which also depend, quite heavily, on initial values. It appears that our rank-based tests significantly outperform the traditional Dickey-Fuller tests, as well as the more recent procedures proposed by Elliott et al. (1996), Ng and Perron (2001), and Elliott and Müller (2006), for a broad range of initial values and for heavy-tailed innovation densities. Thus, they provide a useful complement to existing techniques.  相似文献

We explore the validity of the 2-stage least squares estimator with l1-regularization in both stages, for linear triangular models where the numbers of endogenous regressors in the main equation and instruments in the first-stage equations can exceed the sample size, and the regression coefficients are sufficiently sparse. For this l1-regularized 2-stage least squares estimator, we first establish finite-sample performance bounds and then provide a simple practical method (with asymptotic guarantees) for choosing the regularization parameter. We also sketch an inference strategy built upon this practical method.  相似文献

General dynamic factor models have demonstrated their capacity to circumvent the curse of dimensionality in the analysis of high-dimensional time series and have been successfully considered in many economic and financial applications. As second-order models, however, they are sensitive to the presence of outliers—an issue that has not been analyzed so far in the general case of dynamic factors with possibly infinite-dimensional factor spaces (Forni et al. 2000, 2015, 2017). In this paper, we consider this robustness issue and study the impact of additive outliers on the identification, estimation, and forecasting performance of general dynamic factor models. Based on our findings, we propose robust versions of identification, estimation, and forecasting procedures. The finite-sample performance of our methods is evaluated via Monte Carlo experiments and successfully applied to a classical data set of 115 US macroeconomic and financial time series.  相似文献

Detecting structural changes in volatility is important for understanding volatility dynamics and stylized facts observed for financial returns such as volatility persistence. We propose modified CUSUM and LM tests that are built on a robust estimator of the long-run variance of squared series. We establish conditions under which the new tests have standard null distributions and diverge faster than standard tests under the alternative. The theory allows smooth and abrupt structural changes that can be small. The smoothing parameter is automatically selected such that the proposed test has good finite-sample size and meanwhile achieves decent power gain.  相似文献

The difference and system generalized method of moments (GMM) estimators are growing in popularity. As implemented in popular software, the estimators easily generate instruments that are numerous and, in system GMM, potentially suspect. A large instrument collection overfits endogenous variables even as it weakens the Hansen test of the instruments’ joint validity. This paper reviews the evidence on the effects of instrument proliferation, and describes and simulates simple ways to control it. It illustrates the dangers by replicating Forbes [American Economic Review (2000) Vol. 90, pp. 869–887] on income inequality and Levine et al. [Journal of Monetary Economics] (2000) Vol. 46, pp. 31–77] on financial sector development. Results in both papers appear driven by previously undetected endogeneity.  相似文献

This article studies inference of multivariate trend model when the volatility process is nonstationary. Within a quite general framework we analyze four classes of tests based on least squares estimation, one of which is robust to both weak serial correlation and nonstationary volatility. The existing multivariate trend tests, which either use non-robust standard errors or rely on non-standard distribution theory, are generally non-pivotal involving the unknown time-varying volatility function in the limit. Two-step residual-based i.i.d. bootstrap and wild bootstrap procedures are proposed for the robust tests and are shown to be asymptotically valid. Simulations demonstrate the effects of nonstationary volatility on the trend tests and the good behavior of the robust tests in finite samples.  相似文献

Censored regression quantiles with endogenous regressors   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper develops a semiparametric method for estimation of the censored regression model when some of the regressors are endogenous (and continuously distributed) and instrumental variables are available for them. A “distributional exclusion” restriction is imposed on the unobservable errors, whose conditional distribution is assumed to depend on the regressors and instruments only through a lower-dimensional “control variable,” here assumed to be the difference between the endogenous regressors and their conditional expectations given the instruments. This assumption, which implies a similar exclusion restriction for the conditional quantiles of the censored dependent variable, is used to motivate a two-stage estimator of the censored regression coefficients. In the first stage, the conditional quantile of the dependent variable given the instruments and the regressors is nonparametrically estimated, as are the first-stage reduced-form residuals to be used as control variables. The second-stage estimator is a weighted least squares regression of pairwise differences in the estimated quantiles on the corresponding differences in regressors, using only pairs of observations for which both estimated quantiles are positive (i.e., in the uncensored region) and the corresponding difference in estimated control variables is small. The paper gives the form of the asymptotic distribution for the proposed estimator, and discusses how it compares to similar estimators for alternative models.  相似文献

Two of the most widely used statistical techniques for analyzing discrete economic phenomena are discriminant analysis (DA) and logit analysis. For purposes of parameter estimation, logit has been shown to be more robust than DA. However, under certain distributional assumptions both procedures yield consistent estimates and the DA estimator is asymptotically efficient. This suggests a natural Hausman specification test of these distributional assumptions by comparing the two estimators. In this paper, such a test is proposed and an empirical example involving corporate bankruptcies is provided. The finite-sample properties of the test statistic are also explored through some sampling experiments.  相似文献

This paper studies the asymptotic properties of partitioning estimators of the conditional expectation function and its derivatives. Mean-square and uniform convergence rates are established and shown to be optimal under simple and intuitive conditions. The uniform rate explicitly accounts for the effect of moment assumptions, which is useful in semiparametric inference. A general asymptotic integrated mean-square error approximation is obtained and used to derive an optimal plug-in tuning parameter selector. A uniform Bahadur representation is developed for linear functionals of the estimator. Using this representation, asymptotic normality is established, along with consistency of a standard-error estimator. The finite-sample performance of the partitioning estimator is examined and compared to other nonparametric techniques in an extensive simulation study.  相似文献

We study the scope of local indirect least squares (LILS) methods for nonparametrically estimating average marginal effects of an endogenous cause X on a response Y in triangular structural systems that need not exhibit linearity, separability, or monotonicity in scalar unobservables. One main finding is negative: in the fully nonseparable case, LILS methods cannot recover the average marginal effect. LILS methods can nevertheless test the hypothesis of no effect in the general nonseparable case. We provide new nonparametric asymptotic theory, treating both the traditional case of observed exogenous instruments Z and the case where one observes only error-laden proxies for Z.  相似文献

It is well-known that size adjustments based on bootstrapping the tt-statistic perform poorly when instruments are weakly correlated with the endogenous explanatory variable. In this paper, we provide a theoretical proof that guarantees the validity of the bootstrap for the score statistic. This theory does not follow from standard results, since the score statistic is not a smooth function of sample means and some parameters are not consistently estimable when the instruments are uncorrelated with the explanatory variable.  相似文献

This article analyses exponential tilting estimator with weak instruments in a nonlinear framework. Our paper differs from the previous literature in the context of consistency proof. Tests that are robust to the identification problem are also analysed. These are Anderson–Rubin and Kleibergen types of test statistics. We also conduct a simulation study wherein we compare empirical likelihood and continuous updating‐based tests with exponential tilting (ET)‐based ones. The designs involve GARCH(1,1) and contaminated structural errors. We find that ET‐based Kleibergen test has the best size among these competitors.  相似文献

We propose a finite sample approach to some of the most common limited dependent variables models. The method rests on the maximized Monte Carlo (MMC) test technique proposed by Dufour [1998. Monte Carlo tests with nuisance parameters: a general approach to finite-sample inference and nonstandard asymptotics. Journal of Econometrics, this issue]. We provide a general way for implementing tests and confidence regions. We show that the decision rule associated with a MMC test may be written as a Mixed Integer Programming problem. The branch-and-bound algorithm yields a global maximum in finite time. An appropriate choice of the statistic yields a consistent test, while fulfilling the level constraint for any sample size. The technique is illustrated with numerical data for the logit model.  相似文献

This paper considers the specification and estimation of social interaction models with network structures and the presence of endogenous, contextual, correlated, and group fixed effects. When the network structure in a group is captured by a graph in which the degrees of nodes are not all equal, the different positions of group members as measured by the Bonacich (1987) centrality provide additional information for identification and estimation. In this case, the Bonacich centrality measure for each group can be used as an instrument for the endogenous social effect, but the number of such instruments grows with the number of groups. We consider the 2SLS and GMM estimation for the model. The proposed estimators are asymptotically efficient, respectively, within the class of IV estimators and the class of GMM estimators based on linear and quadratic moments, when the sample size grows fast enough relative to the number of instruments.  相似文献

We characterize the robustness of subsampling procedures by deriving a formula for the breakdown point of subsampling quantiles. This breakdown point can be very low for moderate subsampling block sizes, which implies the fragility of subsampling procedures, even when they are applied to robust statistics. This instability arises also for data driven block size selection procedures minimizing the minimum confidence interval volatility index, but can be mitigated if a more robust calibration method can be applied instead. To overcome these robustness problems, we introduce a consistent robust subsampling procedure for M-estimators and derive explicit subsampling quantile breakdown point characterizations for MM-estimators in the linear regression model. Monte Carlo simulations in two settings where the bootstrap fails show the accuracy and robustness of the robust subsampling relative to the subsampling.  相似文献
