We provide a new framework for estimating the systematic and idiosyncratic jump tail risks in financial asset prices. Our estimates are based on in-fill asymptotics for directly identifying the jumps, together with Extreme Value Theory (EVT) approximations and methods-of-moments for assessing the tail decay parameters and tail dependencies. On implementing the procedures with a panel of intraday prices for a large cross-section of individual stocks and the S&P 500 market portfolio, we find that the distributions of the systematic and idiosyncratic jumps are both generally heavy-tailed and close to symmetric, and show how the jump tail dependencies deduced from the high-frequency data together with the day-to-day variation in the diffusive volatility account for the “extreme” joint dependencies observed at the daily level.  相似文献

This research is concerned with the response of the NASDAQ Financial 100 index to macroeconomic news. The paper employs the newly developed technique of generalized impulse response analysis to examine how macroeconomic shocks affect the performance of the financial sector. The results identify the magnitude and persistence of the response of financial companies stock returns arising from shocks to the stance of monetary policy, real output, inflation, and risk. The findings add to the literature on the determinants of financial sector stocks and on the relationship between the stock market and the macroeconomy. Motivated by the common problem of constructing predictive distributions for daily asset returns over horizons of one to several trading days, this article introduces a new model for time series. This model is a generalization of the Markov normal mixture model in which the mixture components are themselves normal mixtures, and it is a specific case of an artificial neural network model with two hidden layers. The article uses the model to construct predictive distributions of daily S&P 500 returns 1971–2005 and one‐year maturity bond returns 1987–2007. For these time series the model compares favorably with ARCH and stochastic volatility models. The article concludes by using the model to form predictive distributions of one‐ to ten‐day returns during volatile episodes for the S&P 500 and bond return series. Volatility proxies like realised volatility (RV) are extensively used to assess the forecasts of squared financial returns produced by volatility models. But are volatility proxies identified as expectations of the squared return? If not, then the results of these comparisons can be misleading, even if the proxy is unbiased. Here, a tripartite distinction is introduced between strong, semi-strong, and weak identification of a volatility proxy as an expectation of the squared return. The definition implies that semi-strong and weak identification can be studied and corrected for via a multiplicative transformation. Well-known tests can be used to check for identification and bias, and Monte Carlo simulations show that they are well sized and powerful—even in fairly small samples. As an illustration, 12 volatility proxies used in three seminal studies are revisited. Half of the proxies do not satisfy either semi-strong or weak identification, but their corrected transformations do. It is then shown how correcting for identification can change the rankings of volatility forecasts.  相似文献

This paper studies a ‘factor cost in advance’ model with increasing returns in production. In the model both partial equilibrium and general equilibrium may exist since working capital of firms limit their input demand. We provide a sufficient condition for the existence of partial equilibrium of a firm operating on a non-convex choice set. Furthermore we establish the existence and uniqueness of competitive equilibrium in the special case of logarithmic utility.  相似文献

We propose a new conditionally heteroskedastic factor model, the GICA-GARCH model, which combines independent component analysis (ICA) and multivariate GARCH (MGARCH) models. This model assumes that the data are generated by a set of underlying independent components (ICs) that capture the co-movements among the observations, which are assumed to be conditionally heteroskedastic. The GICA-GARCH model separates the estimation of the ICs from their fitting with a univariate ARMA-GARCH model. Here, we will use two ICA approaches to find the ICs: the first estimates the components, maximizing their non-Gaussianity, while the second exploits the temporal structure of the data. After estimating and identifying the common ICs, we fit a univariate GARCH model to each of them in order to estimate their univariate conditional variances. The GICA-GARCH model then provides a new framework for modelling the multivariate conditional heteroskedasticity in which we can explain and forecast the conditional covariances of the observations by modelling the univariate conditional variances of a few common ICs. We report some simulation experiments to show the ability of ICA to discover leading factors in a multivariate vector of financial data. Finally, we present an empirical application to the Madrid stock market, where we evaluate the forecasting performances of the GICA-GARCH and two additional factor GARCH models: the orthogonal GARCH and the conditionally uncorrelated components GARCH.  相似文献

One of the main arguments of behavioral finance is that some properties of asset prices are most probably regarded as deviations from fundamental value and they are generated by the participation of traders who are not fully rational, thus called noise traders. Noise trader theory postulates that sentiment traders have greater impact during high-sentiment periods than during low-sentiment periods, and sentiment traders miscalculate the variance of returns undermining the mean-variance relation. The main objective of this research is to construct a model to evaluate the returns and conditional volatility of various stock market indexes considering the changes in the investor sentiment by measuring the effects of noise trader demand shocks on returns and volatility. EGARCH model is used to determine whether earning shocks have more influence on the conditional volatility in high sentiment periods weakening the mean–variance relation. This paper takes an international approach using weekly market index returns of U.S., Japan, Hong Kong, U.K., France, Germany, and Turkey. Weekly trading volumes of these indexes are regressed against a group of macroeconomic variables and the residuals are used as proxies for investor sentiment and significant evidence is found that there is asymmetric volatility in these market indexes and earning shocks have more influence on conditional volatility when the sentiment is high.  相似文献

Evaluating value at risk (VaR) for a firm’s returns during periods of financial turmoil is a challenging task because of the high volatility in the market. We propose estimating conditional VaR and expected shortfall (ES) for a given firm’s returns using quantile regression with cross-sectional (CSQR) data about other firms operating in the same market. An evaluation using US market data between 2000 and 2020 shows that our approach has certain advantages over a CAViaR model. Identification of low-risk firms and a reduction in computing times are additional advantages of the new method described.  相似文献

Several nonnested fat-tailed distributions have been advocated for modelling exchange rate returns. Instead of directly estimating these nonnested distributions we investigate the extremal distribution of the returns. The advantage is that the parameter which characterizes the amount of tail fatness can be estimated without maintaining a specific distribution, and hence enables one to test hypotheses. The parameter of the limit law is estimated by employing nonparametric procedures based on order statistics. The appropriateness of these procedures is assessed. Given this estimate one can derive bounds on the returns for very low probabilities on an excess. Such information is useful in evaluating the volatility of exchange rates.  相似文献

We demonstrate that causality-in-variance test could be employed to model the direction and lags in information flow between two variables and to avoid misspecifications. We apply this methodology to test the causality between the financial sector returns and interest rates of the G7 countries and show that the direction and the lead/lag structure of causality in the mean and the variance are more complex and dynamic than that have previously been reported. In most cases, we found two-way information flow both at the mean and the volatility level. Causality results give us insights into (i) how and when information is impacted on different market segments, and (ii) design more objective bi-variate models with the appropriate lag structure.  相似文献

This paper explores the asymptotic distribution of the cointegrating vector estimator in error correction models with conditionally heteroskedastic errors. Asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of the cointegrating vector, which estimates the cointegrating vector and the multivariate GARCH process jointly, are provided. The MLE of the cointegrating vector follows mixture normal, and its asymptotic distribution depends on the conditional heteroskedasticity and the kurtosis of standardized innovations. The reduced rank regression (RRR) estimator and the regression-based cointegrating vector estimators do not consider conditional heteroskedasticity, and thus the efficiency gain of the MLE emerges as the magnitude of conditional heteroskedasticity increases. The simulation results indicate that the relative power of the t-statistics based on the MLE improves significantly as the GARCH effect increases.  相似文献

This paper investigates the predictability of foreign exchange (FX) volatility and liquidity risk factors on returns to the carry trade, an investment strategy that borrows in currencies with low interest rates and invests in currencies with high interest rates. Previous studies have suggested that this predictability could have been spuriously accounted for due to the persistence of the predictors. The analysis uses a predictive quantile regression model developed by Lee (2016) that allows for persistent predictors. We find that predictability changes remarkably across the entire distribution of currency excess returns. Predictability weakens substantially in the left tail once persistence is accounted for, implying a moderate negative predictive relation between FX volatility risk and carry trade returns. By contrast, it becomes stronger in the right tail. Furthermore, we provide evidence that FX volatility risk still dominates liquidity risk after controlling for persistence. These findings suggest that the persistence of the predictors needs to be taken into account when one measures predictability in currency markets. Finally, out-of-sample forecast performance is also presented.  相似文献

Financial market participants are interested in knowing what events can alter the volatility pattern of financial assets and how unanticipated shocks determine the persistence of volatility over time. The present paper studies these issues by detecting time periods of sudden changes in volatility by using the iterated cumulated sums of squares (ICSS) algorithm. Examining five major sectors from January 1992 to August 2003, we found that accounting for volatility shifts in the standard GARCH model considerably reduces the estimated volatility persistence. We model the stochastic evolution of the probability density functions (PDFs) of Ibovespa intraday returns over business days, in a functional time series framework. We find evidence that the dynamic structure of the PDFs reduces to a vector process lying in a two-dimensional space. Our main contributions are as follows. First, we provide further insights into the finite-dimensional decomposition of the curve process: it is shown that its evolution can be interpreted as a dynamic dispersion-symmetry shift. Second, we provide an application to realized volatility forecasting, with a forecasting ability that is comparable to those of HAR realized volatility models in the model confidence set framework.  相似文献

Due to the fact that there has been only little research on some essential issues of the Variance Gamma (VG) process, we have recognized a gap in literature as to the performance of the various estimation methods for modeling empirical share returns. While some papers present only few estimated parameters for a very small, selected empirical database, Finaly and Seneta (Int Stat Rev 76:167–186, 2008) compare most of the possible estimation methods using simulated data. In contrast to Finaly and Seneta (2008) we utilize a broad, daily, and empirical data set consisting of the stocks of each company listed on the DOW JONES over the period from 1991 to 2011. We also apply a regime switching model in order to identify normal and turbulent times within our data set and fit the VG process to the data in the respective period. We find out that the VG process parameters vary over time, and in accordance with the regime switching model, we recognize significantly increasing fitting rates which are due to the chosen periods.  相似文献

In the past, stock returns are often assumed to be normally distributed. Potential gains from international portfolio diversification are thus based on a mean-variance framework. However, numerous empirical results reveal that stock returns are actually not normally distributed. Although previous studies found that both skewness and kurtosis can be rapidly diversified away, these results are only valid for a random sample of a given portfolio size. This paper studies the joint effect of diversification and intervaling on the skewness and kurtosis of eleven international stock market indexes with a holding period spanning from one to six months. A complete set of all possible combinations of portfolios is used. It is found that diversification does not reduce either skewness or kurtosis. As the portfolio size increases, portfolio returns become more negatively skewed and more leptokurtic. As a result, a rational investor may not gain from international diversification.  相似文献

Nonparametric estimation and inferences of conditional distribution functions with longitudinal data have important applications in biomedical studies. We propose in this paper an estimation approach based on time-varying parametric models. Our model assumes that the conditional distribution of the outcome variable at each given time point can be approximated by a parametric model, but the parameters are smooth functions of time. Our estimation is based on a two-step smoothing method, in which we first obtain the raw estimators of the conditional distribution functions at a set of disjoint time points, and then compute the final estimators at any time by smoothing the raw estimators. Asymptotic properties, including the asymptotic biases, variances and mean squared errors, are derived for the local polynomial smoothed estimators. Applicability of our two-step estimation method is demonstrated through a large epidemiological study of childhood growth and blood pressure. Finite sample properties of our procedures are investigated through simulation study.  相似文献
