Strategic development of third-party logistics providers (TPLs): “Going under the floor” or “raising the roof”?

Contemporary (third-party logistics providers) TPLs are in danger of being stuck in the middle, unable to perform customer adaptation as well as before and unable to achieve sufficient economies of scale. This conceptual paper aims to explore challenges facing the strategic development of TPLs within a context of increased digitalization, e-commerce and servitization.There are two apparent strategic paths. Under circumstances of strong price pressure, there is demand for standardized TPL services offering simplicity, minimalism and functionality based on digitalization, e-commerce and servitization. Alternatively, with market developments responsive to supply chain complexity, digitalization, e-commerce and servitization enable development towards innovation and change.We conclude that these developments do not invalidate existing frameworks for TPL strategies but contribute alternative strategies. We formulate three propositions for each strategic path. To avoid being stuck in the middle, TPLs are encouraged to either develop efficient services through servitized logistics chains and digital solutions or develop advanced solutions to integrate the consumer into the logistics network system through competencies to control increased levels of complexity.     

What determines the performance of strategic alliance managers? Two lens model studies

Given the increasingly frequent call—often from macro, strategy researchers—for more micro-level probes into the drivers of strategic alliance performance, this article has responded to such a call by leveraging the organizational behavior (OB) and human resource (HR) literature on competencies. Based on two studies drawing on the lens model (Brunswik, 1954), we take on an important but little explored question: “What determines the performance of strategic alliance managers?” In Study 1 (a laboratory study), double system policy capturing results show a positive relationship between alliance competencies and performance judgments. In Study 2 (a field study), we investigate the evaluative behavior of alliance supervisors. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) results suggest that some structural, functional, and social competencies are evaluated as more important than other competencies in determining alliance managers’ performance.     

Regional differences in business ethics in the People’s Republic of China: A multi-dimensional approach to the effects of modernisation

This paper investigates the influence of modernisation on the moral judgements of 211 managers in the People’s Republic of China, based on their responses to a series of vignettes depicting potentially unethical behaviour in organisations. Since modernisation can take many forms, this paper takes a multi dimensional approach to examining levels of modernisation in different provinces in China. Three different measures are used, believed to represent different aspects of the modernisation process. These include the level of industrialisation of various provinces, the level of marketisation, or progress toward a market-based economy, and a new measure of Westernisation, or the extent to which individuals adopt aspects of Western lifestyle and materialism. This latter measure is developed and tested in the present study. Statistically significant associations between these three measures of modernisation and managers’ moral judgements were observed and the implications of these findings are discussed.

美众议院拒绝布什提高战略石油储备的拨款要求 美国众议院拨款委员会6月6日拒绝了布什政府关于将战略石油储备提高一倍的拨款要求.但该委员会同意拨款资助清洁能源技术的研发.美国能源部2007年初开始分两个步骤提高战略石油储备,以使美国的战略石油储备从目前的7.27亿桶提高到2027年的15亿桶.

新加坡加大投资力度推进清洁能源发展 3月初,新加坡政府宣布,将在今后5年投入1.7亿新加坡元,以推动清洁能源尤其是太阳能的研究与发展,目标是让清洁能源在2015年为新加坡带来17亿新加坡元的经济收入.3月26日,该国经济发展局宣布再拨款1.8亿新加坡元,用于今后5年开发新的清洁能源产品,重点培养清洁能源方面的人才.新加坡希望吸引世界各地的清洁能源企业来新加坡研究开发相关技术.
