Cash prizes and mail survey response rates: A threshold analysis

In a study involving the mailing of some 3,150 questionnaires, the ability of six kinds of incentives to augment survey responses was tested against a no-incentive control condition. Two of the incentives were small prepaid monetary amounts (25￠ and $1.00), while the remaining four consisted of the opportunity for respondents to win cash prizes valued at either $50, $100, $150, or $200. The use of such cash prizes enabled an approximate test of the just-noticeable-difference principle in terms of both its absolute and differential threshold hypotheses. The 25￠ and $1.00 incentives yielded response rates that were significantly larger than that of the control group. No confirmation of the differential threshold hypothesis was evidenced, at least over the range of cash prizes employed in the present study. In contrast, the absolute threshold hypothesis received support. Suggestions for further research in this area were also identified.

THE GEOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ULTRAMAFIC ROCKS IN NORTHERN HEBEI

Uhramafic rock area in Northern Hebei is situated in the northern margin of the North China Platform, along Chongli-Longhua deep major fracture zone which is the boundary of Inner Mongolia Anteclise and Yanshan subsidence Zone.In this region,Archeozoic eonothem darkcolor metamorphic rock(mainly plagio-hornblende gneiss) and ultramafic rock outcrops developed widely; Fractures are very developed;magmatism is very intensive and frequent.Along the deep fracture zone, various types of magmatism of an immense tectonic-magrnetic zone have provided favorable conditions for the mineralization of gold. In 1984,a gold ore deposit was discovered in Xiaozhangjiakou ultramafic massif,Chicheng county and another gold deposit had been discovered in Bulaotun ultramafic massif,Miyun county,in 1990.More and more people realized that ultramafic rocks have an important significance for the gold mineralization and began to pay more attention to the scientific research of ultramafic rocks in Northern Hebei province.

Abstract： In recent years, with the rapid economic development, China＇s environmental problems are becoming increasingly prominent, and pressure on energy saving is increasing. Carbon tax as an effective tool of energy saving has got increasing attention. Based on the need for energy conservation, according to the level of tax collection and management, drawing on international experience, China should follow the ＂polluter pays＂ principle to determine tax payer on the basis of estimated amount of carbon dioxide emissions, use a fixed carbon tax rate, consider environmental protection and industrial competitiveness protection, rationally design a carbon tax incentives, make full use of the carbon tax in promoting economic, social and environmental sustainable development.
