This paper examines the use of sparse methods to forecast the real (in the chain-linked volume sense) expenditure components of the US and EU GDP in the short-run sooner than national statistics institutions officially release the data. We estimate current-quarter nowcasts, along with one- and two-quarter forecasts, by bridging quarterly data with available monthly information announced with a much smaller delay. We solve the high-dimensionality problem of monthly datasets by assuming sparse structures of leading indicators capable of adequately explaining the dynamics of the analyzed data. For variable selection and estimation of the forecasts, we use LASSO together with its recent modifications. We propose an adjustment that combines LASSO cases with principal components analysis to improve the forecasting performance. We evaluated the forecasting performance by conducting pseudo-real-time experiments for gross fixed capital formation, private consumption, imports, and exports over a sample from 2005–2019, compared with benchmark ARMA and factor models. The main results suggest that sparse methods can outperform the benchmarks and identify reasonable subsets of explanatory variables. The proposed combination of LASSO and principal components further improves the forecast accuracy.  相似文献

Nonlinear deterministic forecasting of daily dollar exchange rates   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We perform out-of-sample predictions on several dollar exchange rate returns by using time-delay embedding techniques and a local linear predictor. We compared our predictions with those by a mean value predictor. Some of our predictions of the exchange rate returns outperform the predictions of the same series by the mean value predictor. However, these improvements were not statistically significant. Another interesting result in this paper which was obtained by using a recently developed technique of nonlinear dynamics is that all exchange rate return series we tested have a very high embedding dimension. Additionally, evidence indicates that these series are likely generated by high dimensional systems with measurement noise or by high dimensional nonlinear stochastic systems, that is, nonlinear deterministic systems with dynamic noise.  相似文献

A decomposition clustering ensemble (DCE) learning approach is proposed for forecasting foreign exchange rates by integrating the variational mode decomposition (VMD), the self-organizing map (SOM) network, and the kernel extreme learning machine (KELM). First, the exchange rate time series is decomposed into N subcomponents by the VMD method. Second, each subcomponent series is modeled by the KELM. Third, the SOM neural network is introduced to cluster the subcomponent forecasting results of the in-sample dataset to obtain cluster centers. Finally, each cluster's ensemble weight is estimated by another KELM, and the final forecasting results are obtained by the corresponding clusters' ensemble weights. The empirical results illustrate that our proposed DCE learning approach can significantly improve forecasting performance, and statistically outperform some other benchmark models in directional and level forecasting accuracy.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to examine the pure and fundamentals-based contagion effects in ASEAN-5 exchange rates during Covid-19 period using daily exchange rates from June 2019 to December 2020. We adopt VECM within the structural VAR framework and higher time–frequency wavelet analysis. The VECM findings show that ASEAN-5 exchange rates are cointegrated during this pandemic and should there be any disequilibrium, daily rate of adjustments in the Indonesian rupiah, Malaysian ringgit and Singapore dollar are 6.58%, 1.47% and 2.45% respectively. The wavelet power spectrum implies that Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore experience prolonged high degree of exchange rates volatility, Thailand experiences mild volatility in the short run and high volatility in the long run and only Philippines experiences mild volatility in the short run and no heightened long run volatility. The wavelet coherence shows Indonesian rupiah reacts first to the Covid-19 shock leading to fundamentals- based contagion to Malaysia and Thailand, and temporary pure contagion based on sentimental to Philippines and Singapore. Only the Philippine peso that insulates itself from the long run shocks. These findings are important as it gives insights into the nature of contagion among ASEAN-5 exchange rates due to global shock of Covid-19 and the need for timely intervention to prevent the short run contagion turning into the long run.  相似文献

This paper examines whether the explanatory power of exchange rate models can be improved by allowing for cross-country asymmetries and non-linear effects of fundamentals. Both appear to be crucial. The samples include the USD versus pound and yen from 1982:10 to 2013:10, and automated model selection is conducted with indicator saturation. Several non-linear effects are significant at 1%. Further, many of the indicators present in the linear models are eliminated once allowing for non-linearities; suggesting some of the structural breaks found in previous work were an artifact of the misspecified linear functional form. These conclusions are robust to estimation using principal components.  相似文献

To improve the predictability of crude oil futures market returns, this paper proposes a new combination approach based on principal component analysis (PCA). The PCA combination approach combines individual forecasts given by all PCA subset regression models that use all potential predictor subsets to construct PCA indexes. The proposed method can not only guard against over-fitting by employing the PCA technique but also reduce forecast variance due to extensive forecast combinations, thus benefiting from both the combination of information and the combination of forecasts. Showing impressive out-of-sample forecasting performance, the PCA combination approach outperforms a benchmark model and many related competing models. Furthermore, a mean–variance investor can realize sizeable utility gains by using the PCA combination forecasts relative to the competing forecasts from an asset allocation perspective.  相似文献

We extend Diebold and Li’s dynamic Nelson-Siegel three-factor model to a broader empirical prospective by including the evaluation of the state space approach and by using nine different ratings for corporate bonds. We find that the dynamic Nelson-Siegel factor AR(1) model outperforms other competitors on the out-of-sample forecast accuracy, especially on the investment-grade bonds for the short-term forecast horizon and on the high-yield bonds for the long-term forecast horizon. The dynamic Nelson-Siegel factor state space model, however, becomes appealing on the high-yield bonds in the short-term forecast horizon, where the factor dynamics are more likely time-varying and parameter instability is more probable in the model specification.  相似文献

We assess the marginal predictive content of a large international dataset for forecasting GDP in New Zealand, an archetypal small open economy. We apply “data-rich” factor and shrinkage methods to efficiently handle hundreds of predictor series from many countries. The methods covered are principal components, targeted predictors, weighted principal components, partial least squares, elastic net and ridge regression. We find that exploiting a large international dataset can improve forecasts relative to data-rich approaches based on a large national dataset only, and also relative to more traditional approaches based on small datasets. This is in spite of New Zealand’s business and consumer confidence and expectations data capturing a substantial proportion of the predictive information in the international data. The largest forecasting accuracy gains from including international predictors are at longer forecast horizons. The forecasting performance achievable with the data-rich methods differs widely, with shrinkage methods and partial least squares performing best in handling the international data.  相似文献

在考察前人油价预测模型研究情况后,文章一方面,从油价序列长记忆性和异方差性着手,将ARFIMA模型和GARCH模型进行结合,构建ARFIMA-GARCH模型;另一方面,还对油价模型构建中的一大难题——影响因素的筛选进行适当探索,尝试结合主成分分析,提取若干主成分,加入ARFIMA-GARCH模型中,形成基于PCA的ARFIMA-GARCH模型。在与其他模型进行比较好,发现基于PCA的ARFIMA-GARCH模型要好于其他模型,文章的研究和改进是有效的和成功的。  相似文献

This paper presents static and dynamic versions of univariate, multivariate, and multilevel functional time-series methods to forecast implied volatility surfaces in foreign exchange markets. We find that dynamic functional principal component analysis generally improves out-of-sample forecast accuracy. Specifically, the dynamic univariate functional time-series method shows the greatest improvement. Our models lead to multiple instances of statistically significant improvements in forecast accuracy for daily EUR–USD, EUR–GBP, and EUR–JPY implied volatility surfaces across various maturities, when benchmarked against established methods. A stylised trading strategy is also employed to demonstrate the potential economic benefits of our proposed approach.  相似文献

Short-Term Load Forecasting (STLF) is a fundamental instrument in the efficient operational management and planning of electric utilities. Emerging smart grid technologies pose new challenges and opportunities. Although load forecasting at the aggregate level has been extensively studied, electrical load forecasting at fine-grained geographical scales of households is more challenging. Among existing approaches, semi-parametric generalized additive models (GAM) have been increasingly popular due to their accuracy, flexibility, and interpretability. Their applicability is justified when forecasting is addressed at higher levels of aggregation, since the aggregated load pattern contains relatively smooth additive components. High resolution data are highly volatile, forecasting the average load using GAM models with smooth components does not provide meaningful information about the future demand. Instead, we need to incorporate irregular and volatile effects to enhance the forecast accuracy. We focus on the analysis of such hybrid additive models applied on smart meters data and show that it leads to improvement of the forecasting performances of classical additive models at low aggregation levels.  相似文献

In this paper we consider estimating an approximate factor model in which candidate predictors are subject to sharp spikes such as outliers or jumps. Given that these sharp spikes are assumed to be rare, we formulate the estimation problem as a penalized least squares problem by imposing a norm penalty function on those sharp spikes. Such a formulation allows us to disentangle the sharp spikes from the common factors and estimate them simultaneously. Numerical values of the estimates can be obtained by solving a principal component analysis (PCA) problem and a one-dimensional shrinkage estimation problem iteratively. In addition, it is easy to incorporate methods for selecting the number of common factors in the iterations. We compare our method with PCA by conducting simulation experiments in order to examine their finite-sample performances. We also apply our method to the prediction of important macroeconomic indicators in the U.S., and find that it can deliver performances that are comparable to those of the PCA method.  相似文献

Factor modeling is a powerful statistical technique that permits common dynamics to be captured in a large panel of data with a few latent variables, or factors, thus alleviating the curse of dimensionality. Despite its popularity and widespread use for various applications ranging from genomics to finance, this methodology has predominantly remained linear. This study estimates factors nonlinearly through the kernel method, which allows for flexible nonlinearities while still avoiding the curse of dimensionality. We focus on factor-augmented forecasting of a single time series in a high-dimensional setting, known as diffusion index forecasting in macroeconomics literature. Our main contribution is twofold. First, we show that the proposed estimator is consistent and it nests the linear principal component analysis estimator as well as some nonlinear estimators introduced in the literature as specific examples. Second, our empirical application to a classical macroeconomic dataset demonstrates that this approach can offer substantial advantages over mainstream methods.  相似文献
