Communications service providers (CSP) supply information, transport and passive infrastructure services that rely on the deployment of multiservice networks. To attain service cost reductions, the planning and design of those networks is essential, so that the total cost of the network ownership (TCO) is minimized. In this paper, we propose a bottom-up calculation framework for the allocation of the TCO cost components (i.e. capital and operational expenditures) to the services supplied by a CSP. For this, the framework is formulated within the context of the network life-cycle. Our method provides the level of abstraction required for the calculation of the three basic service cost contributors, namely, direct, shared and common costs. Moreover, it outlines the role of network planning in the design of an efficient network infrastucture, and in the calculation of the TCO. Based on this, we show how the stand alone, fully allocated and long-run incremental costs of a service can be calculated. Besides the determination of service cost drivers, the framework is useful to evaluate the cost-efficiency of competing technologies. To illustrate this, we study the allocation of the infrastructure costs for a CSP offering transport services with an optical network. By designing the infrastructure with fixed-grid and flex-grid technologies, it is shown that in both cases the main service cost driver is determined by the transponders installed. The results show that fixed-grid fits well for the provisioning of high speed constant bit-rate transport services, whereas flex-grid is a good candidate for transport services with bursty traffic patterns. 相似文献

This article develops a map to analyze the dynamic forces that influence the structure and development of 3G (third generation) wireless communications value networks. The analysis builds on the Strategic Value Assessment Model (Fine, et al. [Fine, Charles H., Vardan, Roger, Pethick, Robert, El Hout, Jamal. Rapid-Response Capability in value chain Design. MIT Sloan Manage Rev 2002, 43(Winter): 69–75.]) and utilizes a qualitative System Dynamics mapping approach. The map focuses on the driving forces affecting user adoption of 3G services, focusing on customer dynamics, competitive dynamics, and technology dynamics. To analyze adoption of 3G services by customers, the articles maps the dynamics of (1) network investment and user population, (2) entry of service innovators as well as price competitors, (3) the effects of positive network externalities arising from a larger user population, (4) price compression as lower willingness-to-pay users adopt 3G services, (5) scale economies in terminal costs and prices, and (6) new content development as a draw to new users. Applying inductive systems diagrams hypotheses are integrated into a causal loop map and tested with data collected at 15 communications-industry workshops attended by 190 participants in Europe. The map aims to deepen the understanding of the possible evolutionary paths of the 3G wireless value network. The article seeks also to assess which future scenarios are plausible and what dynamic triggers might make them likely. 相似文献

Investment planning for rural mobile networks is critically dependant on the local conditions. There are geographical limits beyond which network deployment is not economically justified. Methodology to assess these limits is presented in this paper. Two different network deployment scenarios are assessed for rural deployment. The scenarios differ technically – one uses well known radio technologies, while the other employs advanced radio link enhancement technologies. Radio link enhancement technologies have evolved to a point where the new technology should be used in early network planning scenarios to maximize investment efficiency. Investment efficiency is also subject to environmental and demographic conditions. A better understanding of the conditions will guide mobile network operators to successful investment planning. A simple cash flow model is created to estimate the success of the investment. Rural conditions in South Africa are used as a case study to assess the feasibility of the selected approach to investment planning. 相似文献
