SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION: A COMPARISON OF EAST ASIA AND EUROPE

Inspired by the observed contrasting patterns of geographical distribution of the electric machinery industry in East Asia and Europe, this paper conducts an empirical clarification of the difference in spatial relationships in industry sizes among countries within a region by use of spatial econometric techniques. The results indicate that, while the size of the electric machinery industry in a country is positively correlated with that of neighboring countries in East Asia, there is no significant spatial correlation in Europe. Such a difference in spatial interdependence has important implications for economic development in those regions.     

REGIONAL DIFFERENCES IN THE DISTRIBUTION OF INDUSTRIAL EMPLOYMENT IN JAPAN

With the rapid economic development from the Meiji era on, Japan has progressed from an agricultural nation at the beginnig of this century to a present-day advanced industrialized nation. However, because of a pronounced regional concentration of industry which exists despite Japan's small size, there have come to be wide regional differences in the structure of industry. I believe that this may be witnessed in the regional differences in the distribution of industrial empolyment.     

THE DISTRIBUTION OF MALE AND FEMALE EARNINGS 1973--91: EVIDENCE FOR BRITAIN

This paper analyses the major developments in the structureof male and female pay in Britain between 1973 and 1991 Theseare the narrowing of the gender pay gap and the increasing inequalityof male and female earnings The first innovation is decomposingthe changing gender pay gap into three components: prices, characteristics,and unmeasured (residual) effects at any percentile level ofinterest to the investigator. An important role for prices innarrowing the gender gap is found and the second innovationis a method to identify which prices are critical Qualificationsturn out to be the key factor.
