Corporate Social Responsibility: Views from the Frontline 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Lisa Whitehouse 《Journal of Business Ethics》2006,63(3):279-296
This paper offers an evaluation of corporate policy and practice in respect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) deriving
from an analysis of qualitative data, obtained during semi-structured interviews with the representatives of 16 companies
from a variety of UK sectors including retail, mining, financial services and mobile telephony. The findings of the empirical
survey are presented in five sections that trace chronologically the process of CSR policy development. The first identifies
the meaning attributed to CSR by the respondent companies followed in the second section by the factors that are driving them
to implement the CSR agenda. The third examines the use of the language of CSR and the concept’s role as either a substantive
concept or simple label. The fourth identifies the criteria used for determining CSR policies and the objectives underlying
them. The fifth and final section offers an analysis of the respondents’ predictions as to the future development of CSR.
On the basis of the findings of the survey, this paper argues that, despite genuine attempts on the part of those responsible
for CSR policy development to address stakeholder concerns, the context within which CSR has been implemented hinders its
potential to offer stakeholders sufficient information by which to evaluate corporate performance in respect of CSR and the
ability of CSR to operate as a meaningful and systematic constraint on corporate behaviour.

The results of a survey of 272 practicing accountants and 374 accounting students enrolled in six universities are analyzed.
Differences and similarities between the two groups with regard to their attitudes toward corporate social responsibility
are examined. The results indicate that the students exhibit greater concern about the ethical and discretionary components
of corporate responsibility and a weaker orientation toward economic performance. No significant differences between the two
groups were observed with respect to the legal dimension of corporate social responsibility. Some explanations as well as
limited generalizations and implications are developed.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the attitudes of Brazilian managers toward Corporate Social Responsibility, defined as their willingness to simultaneously meet the economic, legal, and ethical commitments that bind business companies to society. A Managers' Social Commitment Index (SCI) is proposed and a new scale is presented and confirmed as a reliable research instrument in a field study involving 252 Brazilian business managers. Results revealed that managers prioritize economic commitment, even though as they get older and more experienced they tend to sacrifice this commitment to comply with the law. Women showed greater willingness to integrate ethical interests in management decision making, revealing a higher degree of social commitment. 相似文献

The relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and business ethics (BE) is both a practical and theoretical issue. Unlike the traditional way of clarifying the relationship through identifying and comparing the extant definitions of the two terms, this study addresses and compares CSR and BE from three perspectives (basic concepts, academic fields, and social movements) in two analytical dimensions (in practice and in theory). This study indicates that: The relationship between the concept of CSR and BE is different from either the relationship between CSR as an academic field and BE as another academic field or the relationship between CSR as a movement and BE as another movement; within the relationships of the two concepts, fields and movements, the relationship between them in practice is different from that in theory; and CSR and BE are neither totally independent nor one of mutual inclusion, rather, they have similarities and differences. 相似文献

This article focuses on the changing nature of market competition and on responsible business conduct on the global stage. The article explores the concept of creative capitalism and seeks to address whether or not corporate social responsibility (CSR) is better realized under creative capitalism. This study is conceptual in nature. While it identifies the forces that facilitate and sustain creative capitalism and strengthen executives' commitment to CSR, it proposes a model that can enhance the possibility of a thriving CSR under creative capitalism. The article advocates that under creative capitalism it is more likely to easily channel executives' passion into broad and purposefully driven endeavors; thereby strengthening executives' capacity for understanding how CSR creates value both for their organizations and for society. 相似文献

This study explored several proposed relationships among professional ethical standards, corporate social responsibility,
and the perceived role of ethics and social responsibility. Data were collected from 313 business managers registered with
a large professional research association with a mailed self-report questionnaire. Mediated regression analysis indicated
that perceptions of corporate social responsibility partially mediated the positive relationship between perceived professional
ethical standards and the believed importance of ethics and social responsibility. Perceptions of corporate social responsibility
also fully mediated the negative relationship between perceived professional ethical standards and the subordination of ethics
and social responsibility. The results suggested that professions should develop ethical standards to encourage social responsibility,
since these actions are associated with enhanced employee ethical attitudes.

In this article, we contend that due to their size and emphasis upon addressing external social concerns, the corporate relationship
between social enterprises, social awareness and action is more complex than whether or not these organisations engage in
corporate social responsibility (CSR). This includes organisations that place less emphasis on CSR as well as other organisations
that may be very proficient in CSR initiatives, but are less successful in recording practices. In this context, we identify
a number of internal CSR markers that may be applied to measuring the extent to which internal CSR practices are being observed.
These considerations may be contrasted with the evidence that community based CSR activities is often well developed in private
sector small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) (Observatory of European SMEs, 2002), a situation which may be replicated
in social enterprises especially those that have grown from micro-enterprises embedded in local communities. We place particular
emphasis upon the implications for employee management. Underpinning our position is the Aristotelian-informed capabilities approach, a theory of human development and quality of
life, developed by Sen (1992; 1999) and Nussbaum (1999) which has been developed further, in an organisational context, (e.g.,
Cornelius, 2002); Cornelius and Gagnon, 2004; Gagnon and Cornelius, 1999; Vogt, 2005. We contend that the capabilities approach
offers additional insights into CSR in social enterprises in general and internal CSR activity in particular. Our article
concludes with proposals for future research initiatives and reflections upon social enterprise development from a capabilities
perspective. 相似文献

In this paper a corporate social responsibility audit is developed following the underlying methodology of the quality award/excellence models. Firstly the extent to which the quality awards already incorporate the development of social responsibility is examined by looking at the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the European Quality Award. It will be shown that the quality awards do not yet include ethical aspects in relation to social responsibility. Both a clear definition of social responsibility and an improved audit instrument are required. A definition and an audit instrument are developed which stimulate movement in that direction and help organisations to reflect on their position in relation to social responsibility.

Recently, several articles have asserted that corporate social responsibility programs have gone too far and need to be reigned
in. These critics have charged that corporate social responsibility is to be regarded with skepticism and that any changes
in corporate accountability should be superficial at best. I will examine a␣number of these objections; I conclude that these
critiques are largely ill founded, but that their increasing frequency in popular media is a cause for concern. I argue that
these purported objections are better understood as one part of a long-term cycle that generally accompanies positive moral
change in institutions. Using the feminist movement as a touchstone, I examine the similarities between backlash against the
movement for corporate accountability as compared to backlash against feminists. I␣also suggest ways in which successful strategies
adopted by feminists could be used effectively to communicate the aims of those working to increase awareness of business
accountability. 相似文献

Recent events have raised concerns about the ethical standards of public and private organisations, with some attention falling
on business schools as providers of education and training to managers and senior␣executives. This paper investigates the
nature of, motivation and commitment to, ethics tuition provided by the business schools. Using content analysis of their
institutional and home websites, we appraise their corporate identity, level of engagement in socially responsible programmes,
degree of social inclusion, and the relationship to their ethics teaching. Based on published research, a schema is developed
with corporate identity forming an integral part, to represent the macro-environment, parent institution, the business school
and their relationships to ethics education provision. This is validated by our findings.

This paper reports on the results of an experiment conducted with experienced corporate directors. The study findings indicate
that directors employ prospective rationality cognition, and they sometimes make decisions that emphasize legal defensibility
at the expense of personal ethics and social responsibility. Directors recognize the ethical and social implications of their
decisions, but they believe that current corporate law requires them to pursue legal courses of action that maximize shareholder
value. The results suggest that additional ethics education will have little influence on the decisions of many business leaders
because their decisions are driven by corporate law, rather than personal ethics.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop an ethical framework for the marketing of corporate social responsibility. Methods The approach is a conceptual one based on virtue ethics and on the corporate identity literature. Furthermore, empirical
research results are used to describe the opportunities and pitfalls of using marketing communication tools in the strategy
of building a virtuous corporate brand. Results/conclusions An ethical framework that addresses the paradoxical relation between the consequentialist perspective many proponents of
the marketing of CSR adopt, and ethical perspectives which criticize an exclusive profit-oriented approach to CSR. Furthermore,
three CSR strategies in relation to the marketing of CSR are discussed. For each CSR strategy it is explored how a corporation
could avoid falling into the promise/performance gap. 相似文献

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is one of the most prominent concepts in the literature and, in short, indicates the
positive impacts of businesses on their stakeholders. Despite the growing body of literature on this concept, the measurement
of CSR is still problematic. Although the literature provides several methods for measuring corporate social activities, almost
all of them have some limitations. The purpose of this study is to provide an original, valid, and reliable measure of CSR
reflecting the responsibilities of a business to various stakeholders. Based on a proposed conceptual framework of CSR, a
scale was developed through a systematic scale development process. In the study, exploratory factor analysis was conducted
to determine the underlying factorial structure of the scale. Data was collected from 269 business professionals working in
Turkey. The results of the analysis provided a four-dimensional structure of CSR, including CSR to social and nonsocial stakeholders,
employees, customers, and government. 相似文献

Companies offer ethics codes and training to increase employees’ ethical conduct. These programs can also enhance individual
work attitudes because ethical organizations are typically valued. Socially responsible companies are likely viewed as ethical
organizations and should therefore prompt similar employee job responses. Using survey information collected from 313 business
professionals, this exploratory study proposed that perceived corporate social responsibility would mediate the positive relationships
between ethics codes/training and job satisfaction. Results indicated that corporate social responsibility fully or partially
mediated the positive associations between four ethics program variables and individual job satisfaction, suggesting that
companies might better manage employees’ ethical perceptions and work attitudes with multiple policies, an approach endorsed
in the ethics literature.

The pharmaceutical sector, an industry already facing stiff challenges in the form of intensified competition and strategic
consolidation, has increasingly become subject to a range of pressures. Crucially, in common with other large-scale businesses,
pharmaceutical firms find themselves ‹invited’ to respond positively to the corporate ‹social’ responsibility (CSR) expectations
of their stakeholders. Consequently, individual managers will almost certainly be obliged to engage in some form of stakeholder
dialogue and this, in turn, means that they will have to make difficult choices about which practices to adopt. This real-world
management predicament runs parallel to an academic interest in CSR stakeholder dialogue theory and models. Accordingly, the
approach of this paper is to focus primarily on the academic debate surrounding stakeholder dialogue, by reviewing past attempts
to research and theorise the subject, by identifying gaps and weaknesses in the literature, and by proposing a new analytical
model. The central aim of the proposed new model is to offer a unified, structured, systematic, and comprehensive approach
to CSR decision making whilst simultaneously providing a practical framework for CSR executives who face the challenge of
responding in an effective manner to stakeholders. The model outlined here is currently being employed to conduct international
comparative empirical research into stakeholder dialogue practices amongst UK and German pharmaceutical firms. In the longer
term the intention is to use the model to undertake international comparative research encompassing a broader range of countries
and industries. 相似文献

In the context of some criticism about social responsibility education in business schools, the paper reports findings from a survey of CSR education (teaching and research) in Europe. It analyses the extent of CSR education, the different ways in which it is defined and the levels at which it is taught. The paper provides an account of the efforts that are being made to mainstream CSR teaching and of the teaching methods deployed. It considers drivers of CSR courses, particularly the historical role of motivated individuals and the anticipation of future success being dependent on more institutional drivers. Finally it considers main developments in CSR research both by business school faculty and PhD students, tomorrows researchers and the resources devoted to CSR research. The conclusion includes questions that arise and further research directions. 相似文献

Shareholders and Social Responsibility 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Brian P. Schaefer 《Journal of Business Ethics》2008,81(2):297-312
The article presents an analysis and critique of Milton Friedman’s argument that the social responsibility of business is
merely to increase its profits. The analysis uncovers a central claim that Friedman implies, but does not explicitly defend,
namely that the shareholders of a corporation have no duty to direct that corporation’s management to exercise social responsibility.
An argument against this claim is then advanced by way of a convergence strategy, whereby multiple influential moral approaches
are shown to align themselves against Friedman. The convergence strategy shows that Friedman’s position lies on the lonely
fringes of Western moral thought, and that at least some of Friedman’s professed adherents appear to offer incoherent moral
views. The convergence strategy is shown to suggest, but not entail, a stakeholder model of the corporation. The article concludes
by considering two objections. 相似文献
