Internet e-ethics in Confrontation with an Activists' Agenda: Yahoo! on Trial

A prolonged confrontation between Yahoo! Inc. and French activists who demand the removal of Nazi items from auction sites as well as restricted access to neo-Nazis sites is described and analyzed. We present the case up to the decision of Yahoo! Inc. to remove the items from yahoo.com following a French court's verdict against the firm. Using a business ethics approach, we distinguish legal, technical, philosophical and managerial issues involved in the case and their management by Yahoo! We conclude on the difficulty of governing relations with society from corporate and legal affairs departments at the headquarters level, and on the clash of two visions over the regulation of social freedom.

Services advertising: showcase the customer!

The research presented in this article focuses on the effectiveness of advertising strategies used in services communication. For this purpose, a quantitative study of 50 magazine advertisements for services in tourism and banking/insurance was conducted with a sample of 249 respondents. This research shows that, for both sectors, certain advertising strategies are more effective than others, and that the most effective advertising strategy is one that showcases the service customer. This strategy is more effective than those highlighting competitive advantage, contact staff, a physical representation of the service or the company’s brand image.

Economic growth is greatly influenced by digital transformation. One condition is powerful high-capacity broadband connectivity based on fiber optic cables. A large part of German network infrastructure is still based on fiberglass. However, there is still a bottleneck: the “last mile”, which consists of copper wire leading to the end user. At this point the data flow is highly decelerated so that applications which require gigabit connectivity will not be possible. It is questionable whether continuing economic competition among network providers will remove this remaining bottleneck. Going forward the government should not trepidate any longer in closing the gap. As in physical infrastructure such as roads and bridges, the maintenance and upgrading of digital infrastructure is its economic responsibility, too.

The internet also lowers entry barriers and makes pricing more transparent which could lead to hyper competition. Price dispersion does not disappear with the internet, even for gambling which entails no movement of merchandise. Strategy is important. Sportsbooks must decide on segments, product mix and geographic scope.
