Summary and concluding remarks The traditional analysis of the performance of large international reinsurers typically concentrates on the effect of exchange rates on profitability of the firm (NRG [9]). The multi-index model enables us to capture and analyze two additional effects: According to the Interest Rates Parity Theorem, the expected rates of return on foreign investments already reflect the expected change in the exchange rate. Therefore, a firm operating in a perfect market would be indifferent to the currency denomination of its financial assets. The firm should consider only the unexpected element in the exchange rate movements, i.e., the exchange risk. The uncertainty in the exchange rate contributes to the variability of the return on each investment and underwriting project. The firm must consider this new element of risk while constructing its investment and insurance portfolios. p ]The model can be used to examine and analyze alternative policies of the firm operating in international markets. For example, the model can be used to examine the “full hedge” policy, in which the insurer has a zero net position in any non-reference currency, or the policy of isolating national insurance markets.  相似文献

We examined downside and upside risk spillovers from exchange rates to stock prices and vice versa for a set of emerging economies. We characterized the dependence structure between currency and stock returns using copulas and computed downside and upside value-at-risk and conditional value-at-risk. We documented a positive relationship between stock prices and currency values in emerging economies with respect to the US dollar and the euro, with downside and upside spillover risk effects transmitted both ways. Finally, we also documented asymmetries in upside and downside risk spillovers and asymmetric differences in the size of risk spillovers when the domestic currency values against the US dollar and the euro. Our results, consistent with flight-to-quality phenomena, have implications for downside and upside risk management of international investor portfolios in emerging markets.  相似文献

This study examines the effects of announcements concerning European Monetary Union on the exchange rate volatilities of several European currencies. It is expected that when good news is portrayed in regard to a single currency this will be considered bad news, thus eliciting a negative reaction, for the German mark. Conversely, good news for a single currency should also be good news for weaker currencies, such as the Portuguese escudo, the Italian lira, the Greek drachma, and the Spanish peseta. In terms of volatility, a reaction to good news should be a reduction in volatility, as bad news should cause an increase in volatility. In total there are 22 announcements examined from January 1986 through September 1997. The German mark is observed to experience greater increases in volatility than decreases, as does the Italian lira. Portugal and Greece appear to react more strongly to positive news in that the decreases in volatility are on average greater than the increases.  相似文献

The pure expectations theory of unbiased forward exchange rates predicts that the slope coefficient in a regression of the change in the spot rate on the difference between the current forward and spot rates should equal unity. In the recent empirical work by Fama, the estimates of this coefficient turn out to be negative in all regressions for nine major industrialized nations. This paper demonstrates that under the expectations theory, the sampling distribution of the regression estimator of this coefficient is upward-biased relative to unity and strongly skewed to the right. The likelihood of negative values is essentially zero. Thus, the estimator is biased in a direction opposite to what is observed. Since the observed estimates lie far out in the thin left-hand tail of the estimator's sampling distribution, the evidence against the hypothesis of unbiased forward rates is much stronger than previously believed.  相似文献

This paper documents common empirical regularities in the foreign exchange market and in the US stock market. We find that increases in interest rates are associated with predictable increases in the volatility of returns in both markets, and that expected returns both in the stock market and in the foreign exchange market are negatively correlated with nominal interest rates. We show that not taking into account the time variation of second moments may seriously affect tests of asset pricing models. Using a numerical example based on the static capital asset pricing model, we are able to produce fluctuations in risk premia similar to those observed empirically. Finally we show that the overidentifying restrictions of the latent variable capital asset pricing model are not rejected when beats are assumed to be correlated with nominal interest rates.  相似文献

We analyse bilateral Swiss franc exchange rate returns in an asset pricing framework to evaluate the Swiss franc's safe haven characteristics. A “safe haven” currency is a currency that offers hedging value against global risk, both on average and in particular in crisis episodes. To explore these issues we estimate the relationship between exchange rate returns and risk factors in augmented UIP regressions, using recently developed econometric methods to account for the possibility that the regression coefficients may be changing over time. Our results highlight that in response to increases in global risk the Swiss franc appreciates against typical carry trade investment currencies such as the Australian dollar, but depreciates against the US dollar, the Yen and the British pound. Thus, the Swiss franc exhibits safehaven characteristics against many, but not all other currencies. We find statistically significant time variation in the relationship between Swiss franc returns and risk factors, with this link becoming stronger in times of stress.  相似文献

The paper examines the post-October 1979 response of exchange rates and interest rates to the new information contained in the first announcement of fifteen US macroeconomic series. Markets respond primarily to monetary news, but also to news about the trade deficit, domestic inflation, and variables that reflect the state of the business cycle. For all fifteen macroeconomic variables, an increase (decrease) in interest rates is accompanied by an appreciation (depreciation) of the dollar, which is consistent with models that stress price rigidity and absence of purchasing power parity.  相似文献

Monetary authorities intervene in the currency markets in order to pursue a monetary rule and/or to smooth exchange rate volatility caused by speculative attacks. In the present paper we investigate for possible intervention effects on the volatility of nominal exchange rates and the estimated equilibrium behaviour of real exchange rates. The main argument of the paper is that omission of intervention effects – when they are significant – would bias the ability to detect any PPP-based behaviour of the real exchange rates in the long run. Positive evidence for this argument comes from the experience of six Central and Eastern European economies, whose exchange markets are characterised by frequent interventions.  相似文献

There is a general consensus that forward exchange rates have little if any power as forecasts of future spot exchange rates. There is less agreement on whether forward rates contain time varying premiums. Conditional on the hypothesis that the forward market is efficient or rational, this paper finds that both components of forward rates vary through time. Moreover, most of the variation in forward rates is variation in premium, and the premium and expected future spot rate components of forward rates are negatively correlated.  相似文献

This paper examines the relationship between macroeconomic news and the dollar–Mark and dollar–Yen exchange rates. We employ high-frequency observations for a 10-year period. We investigate whether exchange rate observations need to be sampled at a high frequency in order to detect significant effects from news announcements on mean returns and volatility. We examine the linearity and symmetry of the responses to news and also allow the effects of the news announcements to vary across states of the economy. We find that news indicating a stronger U.S. economy causes an appreciation of the U.S. dollar, that the responses are essentially complete within 5 min, and that measuring the responses over 6-h intervals eliminates the statistical significance of the news. The effects of news appear linear and symmetric but there is some evidence that the effects depend on the state of the economy.  相似文献

Models of exchange rates have typically failed to produce results consistent with the key fact that real and nominal exchange rates move in ways not closely connected to current (or past) macroeconomic variables. Models that rely on the same shocks to drive fluctuations in macroeconomic variables and exchange rates typically imply counterfactually-strong co-movements between them. We develop a model in which new information leads agents to change their rational beliefs about risk premia on foreign exchange markets. These changes in risk premia work through asset markets to cause real and nominal exchange rates to change without corresponding changes in GDP, productivity, money supplies, and other key macro variables.  相似文献

Recent developments in trade theory strongly emphasize that international trade requires an intensive use of skilled workers. Against this background, we explore in this paper whether labor skills are a key determinant of real exchange rates in the long run. Using panel regressions covering 22 countries over the period 1950–2010, we find that labor skills are indeed a structural determinant of real exchange rates, with a permanent increase of the skilled–unskilled labor ratio leading to a long-run appreciation of the real exchange rate. This finding is robust to the inclusion of several control variables, like those used in traditional analyses of real exchange rates.  相似文献

In this paper an ex-post forecasting experiment is performed on the basis of a version of the ‘news’ model of exchange rate determination. For several exchange rates the ‘news’ formulation of monetary exchange rate models leads to relatively accurate ex-post exchange rate forecasts at a number of forecasting horizons. For a majority of the exchange rates studied, however, the results do not compare favorably with those obtained from the naive random walk forecasting rule. Thus, the findings in this article provide mixed evidence with regard to a suggestion in the literature that the finding by Meese and Rogoff that structural models do not even outperform the random walk in an ex-post forecasting experiment, may be due to the fact that these models were not properly tested in a ‘news’ framework.  相似文献

This paper proposes two new tests for linear and nonlinear lead/lag relationships between time series based on the concepts of cross-correlations and cross-bicorrelations, respectively. The tests are then applied to a set of Sterling-denominated exchange rates. Our analysis indicates that there existed periods during the post-Bretton Woods era where the temporal relationship between different exchange rates was strong, although these periods have become less frequent over the past 20 years. In particular, our results demonstrate the episodic nature of the nonlinearity, and have implications for the speed of flow of information between financial series. The method generalises recently proposed tests for nonlinearity to the multivariate context.  相似文献

Contemporary press frequently attaches significance with specific numerical values in exchange rates. This research empirically tests for the presence of clustering and “psychological barriers” (transgressional effects) on various exchange rates involving the Australian dollar. Overall, we find a widespread clustering effect, which accordingly means there is partial information content in the actual numbers of the exchange rates themselves. Furthermore, there is some, but not strong, evidence that perceived “psychological barriers” do exist. Surprisingly, the location and form of both the clustering and transgressional effects and hence the information content differ across different exchange rates and in most instances, they are not in the expected direction.  相似文献

This note shows that a negative correlation between the price of foreign currency and nominal interest rates in not necessarily an indication of movements in the real rate of interests. Such a correlation could be consistent with a monetarist model in which the real rate is constant.  相似文献

This paper examines the relationship between forward exchange rates and subsequently observed spot rates. No evidence is found for a liquidity premium on forward exchange, indicating that the forward rate can be used as a proxy of the market's expectations and that open exchange positions involve little systematic risk. It is also shown that forward exhange is priced as if the exchange rate could be characterized by a diffusion process with a trend, although there is some evidence such a process does not adequately characterize the exchange rate in all cases.  相似文献

The pattern of correlation between the exchange rate and the current account is investigated in the context of an econometric portfolio-balance model with rational expectations. While exchange-rate appreciation (depreciation) is positively correlated with current account surpluses (deficits) in response to unanticipated disturbances, there can be either positive or negative correlation in response to anticipated disturbances. Using maximum likelihood methods, the model is estimated and the response to anticipated disturbances is simulated using data from the current flexible exchange-rate period. The exchange rate and the current account are found to be positively correlated in response to anticipated disturbances for Japan and the United States, and negatively correlated for Germany and the United Kingdom.  相似文献

Previous studies have concluded that productivity shocks have negligible effects on real exchange rate fluctuations. This paper shows that when long-run equilibrium relationships between real exchange rate levels and fundamental variables are taken into account, relative productivity shocks account for most of the long-run movements in the real exchange rates. This can be interpreted as empirical support for the Balassa (1964. Journal of Political Economy 72, 584-596) and Samuelson (1964. Review of Economics and Statistics 46, 145-154) model where differences in relative productivity is the main source of long-run deviations for purchasing power parity.  相似文献

Conclusion Wage growth in west Germany has, over the longer term and with few exceptions, been far more closely oriented towards macroeconomic productivity growth than in the majority of its competitor countries. Even after adjusting for exchange rate movements, it is evident that unit labour costs in west Germany have, in general, growth significantly less strongly and in most cases are lower in absolute terms than abroad. The fact that, in spite of this, Germany has repeatedly faced foreign trade problems, is due to the volatility of exchanges rates. The demand—in such cases seemingly self-evident, although usually not explicitly formulated—that collective wage bargainers ought to orient wage growth not only towards productivity growth but also towards exchange rates would mean standing the economy on its head, however. A rational alternative to this is to stabilise exchange rates or indeed their partial abolition, as is the aim of European Monetary Union. It would be irrational, on the other hand, to abolish the wage determination system which, on the whole, has proved its effectiveness in orienting average wage increases towards macroeconomic productivity growth.  相似文献
