This paper examines the applicability of Japanese management practices in Britain within a socio-cultural perspective. Using a case study research in a Japanese multinational subsidiary in Britain, the paper argues that some management practices are incompatible with British societal and business cultural characteristics and are therefore not adopted by the Japanese managers working in this country. There are some practices which can more readily be adapted to local conditions and have successfully been implemented in Britain. 相似文献

Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a systematic approach that considers customer needs through design, production, marketing,
and support stages. Customer needs are the main input for QFD, so voice of customer must be understood well and changes, innovations,
and treatments must be held in this view. In QFD applications, determining the priorities of customer needs is a fairly important
stage. This is mostly held by Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) a multicriteria decision making technique. Nonetheless, Ordered
Weighted Averaging (OWA) is an aggregation technique mostly used in decision making for multicriteria decision problems. So,
combining these two techniques will give a different viewpoint for prioritizing the customer needs in QFD applications. The
aim of this study is to show the use of Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA) aggregation technique in QFD applications. For this
purpose a case study in Dokuz Eylül University Textile Engineering Department was held. It was aimed to support the efforts
on increasing the education quality by determining the students’ needs and opinions using QFD with OWA. 相似文献

The national engineering strike of 1979 was by far the largest strike in Britain in recent years. Here the authors examine a crucial aspect of the strike which has been given little systematic attention, that is in the way it was organised at local level and mobilised mass support. 相似文献

The Federal Republic of Nigeria has set out the modalities for launching a competition policy regime in its electricity industry in 2006. By analysing the factors that may inhibit a smooth transition to contestable regimes in generation (commodity and capacity) and in supply (metering, billing and customer services), this paper lays the foundation for the policy advisors to begin to re-think whether unbundling and deregulation is the best way for Nigeria to improve power supply. The paper concludes that, consistent with some of the other countries in sub-Saharan Africa, implementing a hastily convened competition policy will be a huge transaction cost, and one that will yield the country very little (if any) economic benefit. 相似文献

In this article the author describes workplace communities in British hotels and discusses the relationships between the workplace community and employees' subculture, family life and leisure patterns. He also discusses the role of the workplace community as an alternative to bureaucratic organisation and the consequences for people of working in a leisure context. 相似文献

- A two-phase mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) study was undertaken to identify and then to confirm the main dimensions and the principal antecedents of the internationalisation behaviour of a sample of British charities known to engage in foreign operations. Specifically the investigation examined the factors that explained charities' decisions to enter foreign countries, the motivations and practical methods involved and the time periods elapsing between first and subsequent entry. Outcomes were compared against theories of internationalisation developed by previous studies completed in the commercial domain. The approaches to internationalisation adopted by 15 organisations were established, and the generalisability of these approaches tested via a mail survey that elicited 238 responses. Least squares, Cox time and logistic regression analyses were completed to determine the factors that significantly influenced the extents and timings of the sample members' international activities. It emerged that some but not all of the considerations that have been found to affect the internationalisation of commercial firms also impacted on the patterns of internationalisation pursued by many of the sample organisations, especially managerial inclinations and participation in networks. However, psychic distance was seemingly irrelevant to charities' internationalisation decisions. Rather, a construct termed for present purposes as ‘philanthropic imperative’ constituted a crucial determinant of behaviour. The results imply that charities' levels of involvement in networks should be encouraged and that charity support organisations need to develop their institutional networking facilities. Also, charity managers should question whether the most favoured mode of entry to foreign countries (i.e. the ad hoc project partnership (PP)) is necessarily the most effective.

- Public sector organisations are being increasingly subjected to both legislative and competitive pressures forcing them to reconsider their relationships with users and customers (Chapman and Cowdell, 1998 ) in order to develop a more overt marketing orientation (defined as focusing on customer needs as the primary drivers of organisational performance (Jobber, 2004 )). The creation of customer value underlies the development of a meaningful marketing orientation, and is a nettle that more public sector and not‐for‐profit organisations will have to grasp. This article considers how a more marketing‐oriented approach was adopted by the British Library in order to clarify and communicate its value proposition to its identified target markets, and in doing so, hopefully achieving a sustainable competitive advantage on an ongoing basis.

Nonlinearity measures: a case study 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
H. N. Linssen 《Statistica Neerlandica》1975,29(3):93-99
Summary An important problem in applied statistics is fitting a given model function f (β) with unknown parameters β to a data vector y. Minimizing the residual sum of squares provides the least squares estimates of β. If f (β) is linear in β the precision of these estimates is well-known. In a nonlinear case approximate (though asymptotically exact) confidence statements can be made. B eale [1] introduced measures of nonlinearity which can be used to indicate when approximate confidence statements are appropriate. G uttman and M eeter [2] showed that in some, severely nonlinear, cases Beale's measures do not give the right indication. In this paper two new nonlinearity measures are introduced and their use is illustrated on a practical problem described by W itt [3]. A more detailed discussion of the theoretical background can be found in references [1] and [2]. 相似文献

Network techniques are applied to a case study. The results show that using a joint approach can help in giving further insight into the analysis of informal ties in an organization. Special emphasis is given to centrality. The concept of mutual awareness, both on an individual and a global levels, is introduced and illustrated. 相似文献

It takes much coordination, communication, patience, and persistence to build and manage supplier partnerships in order to lower total costs, reduce lead times, improve the quality of products, optimize inventories, and streamline administrative process. In the absence of the latest technology, it takes talented and enthusiastic team members who take pride in their work, who can think progressively, who can generate optimism in any situation, and who can maintain grace under pressure in order to be successful. 相似文献

Charity Technology Trust (CTT) is one of a new breed of philanthropic initiatives aimed at helping UK charities become more efficient by better use of technology. Its founder believes that charities are ideally placed to benefit from the reduced costs and shared benefits of jointly developed strategies and fundraising, communications and data management tools. CTT was formed to catalyse a move in this direction from the major UK fundraising charities and is supported by the personal philanthropic contributions of its trustees—a group of successful businessmen. The challenge for such a new organisation with a new idea is considerable, but after 18 months CTT is working with 27 of the top 100 UK charities on projects from online raffles through e‐mail communications to IT strategy. This study is concerned with the explanations that managers give to various company stakeholders, in the case of factory closures for example. More generally, the paper examines the way justifications of managerial action are produced and “consumed”, and how the “legitimacy” on which they are based can change over time. With the help of a longitudinal case study the paper describes and seeks to explain the legitimisation processes involved in the major organisational transformations that the case firm has had to face due to radical market changes (joining EU) and organisational changes. It is argued that managers may become prisoners of their context. This may mean that even if they made “correct” decisions, they may still justify these actions “incorrectly” relative to the new cultural and market environment, and thus do not acquire legitimacy. In the reported case almost the whole executive board of the firm was fired—the first time such a thing had happened in the history of Finnish corporate life. It is also shown that the justification of managerial action may be deliberately manipulated in public discourse. One powerful legitimative device in such discourse is to invoke financial distress, or the idea of such distress, which may be needed for triggering genuine changes. 相似文献

State programs in high technology development have expanded rapidly since 1979, when only five states had such programs. Today almost all states have technology development programs. Many of these involve partnerships between the state government, industry and universities. The newness of these programs makes the evaluation of their success problematic. However, analysis of the formation and management of technology development programs is useful to practitioners charged with the implementation of university-industry advanced technology programs. One of the largest programs is the Thomas Edison Program created by the Ohio Legislature in 1983. The program has three components, a Seed Capital Fund, Advanced Technology Centers, and Incubator Program. This paper examines the Edison program through analysis of the Edison Animal Biotechnology Center, one of the seven state Advanced Technology Centers. 相似文献

In this research, we investigated the predictive powers of I-deals and job crafting on key employee outcomes (in-role work performance, citizenship behaviors directed at organization and co-workers, affective commitment and intentions to stay). In doing so, we also compared the explanatory degree of job crafting and I-deals on these outcomes. We used two sets of samples, both drawn from across different industries in Istanbul, Turkey. The first study examined the factorial structures of job crafting and I-deals scales. The second study is used to test our hypotheses regarding effects and strengths of I-deals and job crafting on the outcomes. Findings from series of structural equation models underscored that I-deals are more critical in leading to enhanced employee outcomes compared to the effects of job crafting. We discuss the role of these proactive behaviors in today’s ever-changing business settings. 相似文献

This paper addresses strategies adopted by one charity retail chain to deal with the problem of the impact of sales competition on the effectiveness of charity shops in producing surplus funds for their parent charities. The organisation sought differentiation on grounds of quality in stock and presentation, via a strict stock rotation policy and tight management controls. Control practices and information systems were found to be supportive of the chosen strategy but financial appraisal of the operation did not fully support the Director's confidence in the effectiveness of his operation. The findings of this study provide a degree of support to papers published in Volume 5, Number 2 of this journal. Copyright © 2003 Henry Stewart Publications 相似文献
