Virtual reality media mark the latest milestone in media evolution in respect to the media’s capacity to involve users’ senses and perceptual resources. Therefore, these new media are assumed to hold an especially strong potential to influence their users. Based on a conceptual model from presence research, this study explicates the potentially powerful effects of virtual media as users’ impression of ?being overwhelmed‘ by the medium, which can manifest in different steps (e.g., attraction of attention, suspension of disbelief, or presence). Subsequently, an experiment (N = 85) tests the impact of key characteristics of virtual media (sensory immersion and interactivity) on the conceptualized different steps of ?being overwhelmed‘. The study uses the example of a virtual museum. Both self-report data and a machine-based procedure (Secondary Task Reaction Times) are applied to measure the state (types) of ?being overwhelmed‘. Results indicate that the general assumption of powerful effects of virtual media should be specified in terms of person x situation models because the subjects’ personal characterists also affected the qualitiy and intensity of users being ?overwhelmed‘.  相似文献

The goals of criminal proceedings are to establish the pertinent facts of a case and to assess these facts in light of valid laws. Based on an online-survey of 447 judges and 271 prosecuting attorneys, it is analyzed how media reports influence the course and outcome of criminal prosecution. The survey inquired about the use of media reports on trials in which the interviewees were involved, perceived shortcomings of media reports, intensity of experienced criticism by media reports, emotional reactions to criticism, perceived influence of media reports on lay people and experts in the courtroom, adaption of one’s own behaviour to expectations of the public, and perceived influence of media reports on sentences. Based on these data, a structural equation model indicates a significant influence of the use of media coverage on sentences. A weaker path leads from media use directly to sentences, a stronger one from media use to emotions and from there to sentences. The findings are discussed in light of juridical theories of the role of the public in criminal proceedings.  相似文献

The bibliometrical analysis of papers published in the German journals Publizistik and Medien & Kommunikationswissenschaft between 1970 and 2010 reveals, for the first time, the most cited research and researchers in communication science. The authors present the 57 most cited scholars and the 45 most highly regarded academic works in the discipline. This canon reflects the different theoretical approaches (action theory and system theory) as well as the subsections in the field of communication studies (media effect studies and journalism research). The study also draws some general conclusions about citation traditions in the discipline. In total there has been a rise in the number of citations since the mid-1990s due to the digital turn—electronic databases and especially the internet have greatly improved the accessibility of sources. The citation rate shows a pattern typical for scientific publications: most studies are hardly ever cited—only very few studies are rewarded with numerous citations.  相似文献
