Five related themes in the social and cultural aspects of contemporary karate-do are examined: 1. the development of karate in Okinawa and Japan and its subsequent growth in the UK, 2. the ‘value-structure’ of karate — how novices are socialized into the ‘karate-way’ (karate-do) in one particular North Wales club, 3. ideological aspects of the value system in karate, 4. the social organization of karate, particularly the interpersonal dynamic of control over self and situation, 5. some methodological and theoretical issues involved in developing a sociology of the martial arts. It is concluded that ‘karate’ must be viewed as highly complex and dynamic in form and style and extremely successful in adapting to the cultural contexts of the West.

The political economy of tourism in the third world 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Stephen G. Britton 《Annals of Tourism Research》1982,9(3):331-358
When a Third World country uses tourism as a development strategy, it becomes enmeshed in a global system over which it has little control. The international tourism industry is a product of metropolitan capitalist enterprise. The superior entrepreneurial skills, resources, and commercial power of metropolitan companies enables them to dominate many Third World tourist destinations. This paper outlines the dynamics of this process, particularly in the context of the South Pacific.

It is commonly argued that today's historic landscapes are the result of change in the past and it is in the nature of the landscapes to be changed as society's needs evolve. This article provides an argument against this proposition. This argument suggests that the evolution of society's needs may also lead to preserved landscapes when both these needs can be satisfied in these landscapes and when individuals place high value upon them. In considering this idea, it is argued that an increase in the society's need for heritage tourism may lead to preserved landscapes.

Louis Turner 《Annals of Tourism Research》1976,4(1):12-24
Turner, Louis, “The International Division of Leisure: Tourism and The Third World,” Annals of Tourism Research, Vol. IV, No. 1, September/October 1976, pp. 12–24 --Despite the obvious attractions of tourism as a foreign exchange earner for a number of developing countries, the industry is dominated by the rich countries which appropriate most of the economic benefits from the tourist trade. This domination takes economic and political forms, and tends to increase over time as tour operators diversify and grow vertically. The policies open to the less developed countries to increase their returns are discussed, and the difficulties they may face are mentioned.
