Effects of Overseas Production on Home Country Exports: Evidence Based on Swedish Multinationals. —Using unique data on Swedish multinationals 1974–1990, the impacts of overseas production on parent exports are analyzed. Two methodological applications are introduced: (i) In order to avoid sample selection bias, the model includes also countries to which the firm exports, but has not established any affiliates; (ii) the effect of affiliate exports to “third countries” is incorporated. The results suggest that increased foreign production both replaces exports of finished goods and attracts intermediate goods from the parent. In contrast to previous studies, the net effect is negative, albeit significant only in the case of affiliate exports in the EC. 相似文献

This paper uses new data on the task content of occupations to present a new picture of the labor market effects of technological change in pre-WWII United States. I show that, similar to the recent computerization episode, the electrification of the manufacturing sector led to a “hollowing out” of the skill distribution whereby workers in the middle of the distribution lost out to those at the extremes. OLS estimates show that electrification increased the demand for clerical, numerical, planning and people skills relative to manual skills while simultaneously reducing relative demand for the dexterity-intensive jobs which comprised the middle of the skill distribution. Thus, early twentieth century technological change was unskill-biased for blue collar tasks but skill-biased on aggregate. These results are in line with the downward trend in wage differentials within U.S. manufacturing up to 1950. 相似文献

This study investigates industrial innovation and innovation patterns in China with a comparison to the Asian Newly Industrialized Economies (NIEs). It estimates knowledge production functions based on an original firm‐level dataset. Estimation results suggest that even though firms in China carry out various innovation activities at the same time, the innovation pattern found among their counterparts in the Asian NIEs is still relevant for contemporary China. In particular, sourcing knowledge and technologies from their OEM customers still plays a crucial role for Chinese firms' process innovation. In contrast, firms cannot rely on this knowledge source for realizing more sophisticated, knowledge‐intensive innovation outcomes, such as product innovation and patenting, for which their own R&D engagement is more significant. 相似文献

Using an internationally linked patent database, this paper compares the types of R&D activities undertaken by multinationals in China by home country and industry. In China, multinationals recently began investing in R&D, mainly in the areas of product and manufacturing process development. However, US firms, which are the most actively invested in R&D, are involved in some technology‐driven R&D activities; European firms are inclined toward market‐driven R&D, while Japanese firms, which lag behind the other two, focus on production‐driven R&D. This pattern may be related to the relative competitiveness of each country: Japanese firms are strong in electronics and automobiles, where production process improvement is important, while US firms flourish in science‐based industries, such as pharmaceuticals and software, where interacting with the local science base is a critical factor. 相似文献

Openness and Total Factor Productivity in Swedish Manufacturing, 1980–1995. — This paper studies the effect of openness on
total factor productivity (TFP) growth. Using industry-level data for Swedish manufacturing from 1980 to 1995, the paper shows
that integrated industries tend to be more engaged in R&D and have more entry and exit activity than other industries. The
results show that domestic R&D intensity does not contribute to the TFP growth rate. Instead, openness to international markets,
which helps facilitate technology spillovers, is an important factor. There is also some evidence that producers exiting the
market are less productive, implying that such exits will increase the average productivity of the industry. 相似文献

The Determinants of Export Performance: A Firm-Level Study of Italian Manufacturing. — This paper analyzes some determinants
of a firm’s probability of exporting and export intensity and presents the findings of an empirical study carried out on a
large sample of Italian firms. On the basis of Probit and Tobit estimates, it emerges that these determinants change according
to the size of firms. In particular, only for small firms is the relationship between size and export performance positive.
The export activity of small and medium-sized firms decreases with the share of sales due to subcontracting. Larger firms,
instead, benefit more from being affiliated with business groups and performing innovative activities of a different nature. 相似文献

Foreign direct investment and productivity spillovers: Evidence from the Spanish experience 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Foreign Direct Investment and Productivity Spillovers: Evidence from the Spanish Experience. — The aim of this paper is to
analyse the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on firms’ productivity using a panel of Spanish manufacturing firms
for the period 1990–1998. Firstly, we show that for countries, like Spain, that are undergoing significant structural changes
over the period in question it is important to control for both time-invariant as well as time-variant sectoral characteristics.
Secondly, we confirm previous findings that one needs to take into account the “absorptive capacity” of firms when considering
whether they are able to avail of externalities associated with FDI presence. For the Spanish case we find that only firms
with sufficient levels of such capacity experience positive spillovers. 相似文献

Interdependence between Overseas and Domestic R&D Activities: Evidence from Taiwanese Multinationals
The purpose of the present paper is to examine the interdependence between the overseas and domestic R&D activities of Taiwanese multinational enterprises (MNEs). Because domestic (overseas) R&D activities may enter the overseas (domestic) R&D determination equation as an endogenous right‐hand side variable, the traditional estimation approach will be invalid due to the endogeneity problem. Therefore, it is proposed that the two R&D decisions be estimated using a simultaneous Tobit model. The results in this paper indicate that Taiwanese MNEs that engage in higher levels of domestic R&D activities will engage in overseas R&D activities. Interestingly, it is also found that Taiwanese MNEs increase their overseas R&D activities in developed countries instead of their domestic R&D activities, whereas Taiwanese MNEs that engage in overseas R&D activities in less‐developed countries will raise their domestic R&D activities. As for the other common determinants of the overseas and domestic R&D activities, firm size and the capital–labor ratio are found to be the main factors. 相似文献

A current concern for China's long‐term growth prospect is whether China can become an innovative economy and achieve industrial upgrading to compensate for the gradually declining competitiveness resulting from low‐cost labor. The present study examines this issue by exploring how trade participation impacts on the R&D investment of manufacturing firms through various channels. Merging China's Annual Manufacturing Survey Dataset and the Chinese Customs Dataset allows us to study such a relationship at the individual firm level. The empirical results suggest that channels such as geographical diversification of export markets, share of imports from high‐income countries, average unit value of imports, number of intermediate goods and capital goods imports, and the trade regime are significant factors that influence firm‐level R&D investment. The study discusses the policy implications of the empirical findings in relation to industrial and trade policies that may be potentially beneficial for China's transition towards an innovative economy. 相似文献

What’s Trade Got to Do with It? Relative Demand for Skills within Swedish Manufacturing. — This paper seeks to identify the contribution of trade and technological change to the increase in inequality between skilled and unskilled workers in Sweden since the 1970s. An empirical approach is adopted which allows for the outsourcing of the low-skill parts of the production chain to low-wage locations and is applied to detailed industry and bilateral trade data, the latter distinguishing between low-wage sources of imports and OECD countries. The paper finds that, in contrast to previous studies, trade with low-wage countries may have contributed to the rise in inequality in Swedish manufacturing. The empirical results also suggest that the increased use of technology also played a role in creating greater inequality between skilled and unskilled workers in Sweden, with the magnitude of this impact increasing in the 1990s. 相似文献

A prediction of a class of neoclassical growth models is that countries with similar levels of integration in the world economy will have parallel long-run growth paths. We test this hypothesis for the OECD, using estimates of long-run mean growth rates of per capita output for each country for the period 1870–2005. The results show strong evidence for unconditional β-convergence only in the post-WWII period of 1951–1974. The results serve as a caution against drawing inferences regarding long-run growth patterns from this sample of countries when the time frame includes the post-WWII golden-age period. 相似文献

European Exports and Outward Foreign Direct Investment: A Dynamic Panel Data Approach. — This paper implements a panel data
approach for studying the determinants of and relationships between bilateral economic activities in terms of both trade and
foreign direct investment between the EU member states. The familiar equation for testing the determinants of bilateral exports
is reformulated to reflect recent theoretical work. It is specified as a dynamic panel data model designed to answer questions
about their relationship according to changes in different exogenous determinants. Exports and stocks of outward FDI are found
to be substitutes with respect to changes in transport costs and complements with respect to most of the other determinants. 相似文献

Trade Regimes and Spillover Effects of FDI: Evidence from Uruguay. — This paper examines differences in the character and
impact of FDI entering Uruguay during import substitution, pursued until 1973, and the subsequent more outwardoriented trade
regime. Regression analysis shows that the labor productivity of local firms is positively related to the presence of older
import-substituting MNCs in their industry. The presence of foreign affiliates established after 1973 has no apparent impact
on local productivity, but seems to raise the likelihood that local firms engage in exporting. This may be a sign of export
spillovers, indicating that local firms may pick up some exportrelated skills from the operations of outward-oriented foreign
MNCs. 相似文献

Multinational Activity and CEO Compensation: Preliminary Evidence from Large UK Firms. — Since the early 1980s the rate of
growth in executive remuneration has consistently outpaced that of average earnings. This phenomenon has been widely assumed
to be part of an internationalization of the executive labor market. This paper starts from the premise that the multinational
enterprise will be a major agent in such a market and presents some preliminary tests for the impact of multinational activity
in general, and specific regional effects in particular, on CEO remuneration using a sample of large UK firms. Surprisingly,
we find no evidence to support our conjecture that CEO pay will be positively related to firm involvement in the United States.
However, multinational activity does generate a significant premium over purely domestic activity. 相似文献

This paper investigates the R&D motivations of various multinationals operating in China, drawing on a large-scale, firm-level dataset of official Chinese statistics on science and technology activities. The present study shows that R&D efforts in China have intensified for bothJbreign-owned and domestic firms, but less so for foreign-owned firms, perhaps because foreign-owned firms tend to operate on a foundation of technological capabilities developed within their home countries. Statistical analysis confirms that the major motivations for foreign R&D in China are production-driven, not market-driven or technology-driven. Nevertheless, one sees significant variations in foreign R&D strategies from region to region. Guangdong is characterized by production-driven R&D. In Beijing, R&D strategies tend to take a technology-driven approach, drawing on the clusters of scienl(fic institutions. In Shanghai, the R&D efforts of multinationals tend to focus on support for market-driven R&D, 相似文献

We investigate the sustainability of fiscal policy in a set of 19 European Monetary Union (EMU) countries over the period 1970–2016. Panel unit root tests in the presence of cross-section dependence show that the government debt series is stationary, indicating that the solvency condition would be satisfied for these countries. This confirms the effectiveness of the austerity measures implemented by these member states. Moreover, an unobserved common factor drives the comovement of government debt in the Eurozone. 相似文献

This paper examines the microeconomic effects of macroeconomic policies or shocks in South Africa. In particular, the paper considers the effects of macroeconomic policies on poverty and inequality by building and linking a microsimulation (MS) model to a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model. In the South African context, where poverty and inequality are at high levels, this novel approach enables us to identify the winners and losers of any policy change, so that the impact on poverty and inequality can be assessed in detail. 相似文献

This article investigates, from a gender and marital status perspective, the effects of pension and health care contributions on the employment and wages of workers covered by social security regulations. To do this, I use as a natural experiment a reform implemented in Colombia during the mid‐1990. In particular I employ a differences‐in‐differences estimation based on an endogenous switching‐regression model that accounts for self‐selection into coverage. My results indicate that, for females, a 10% increase in contributions reduces the relative wages of covered workers by 7.2%. On the other hand, for males, the reform increases the relative wages of covered workers by 7.1%. Among females, the effect is predominantly present in single women. Among men, divorced and widowed workers are the only group not to experience an effect on earnings. For most family groups, the social security reform has no significant effect on coverage. 相似文献

A Review of the Empirical Literature on FDI Determinants 总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10

This paper surveys the recent burgeoning literature that empirically examines the foreign direct investment (FDI) decisions
of multinational enterprises (MNEs) and the resulting aggregate location of FDI across the world. The contribution of the
paper is to evaluate what we can say with relative confidence about FDI as a profession, given the evidence, and what we cannot
have much confidence in at this point. Suggestions are made for future research directions.

This paper theoretically and empirically investigates the home‐country effects of a firm's outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) activity, specifically OFDI motivated by lower labor costs in the host country. A two‐country imperfect competition model is developed, and the interaction between a firm's R&D spending and its OFDI is examined. It is found that the relationship between a firm's OFDI and its domestic R&D is indeterminate because there is a complementary effect as well as a substitution effect induced by OFDI activity. Panel data on Taiwanese manufacturing firms from 1992–2005 are applied to test the validity of the theoretical results. The propensity score matching method is used to construct a comparison group without selection bias. Our empirical evidence reveals that a Taiwanese firm's OFDI is positively related to its domestic R&D spending, particularly in R&D‐intensive industries. 相似文献
