Detecting periodic patterns of arrival delay   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This study identifies the periodic patterns of arrival delay for non-stop domestic flights at the Orlando International Airport during 2002–2003. Cyclic variations in air travel demand and weather at the airport were observed and their consequent effects on flight delay were investigated. This study detected the frequencies of any regularly repeating delay patterns and then identified the factors associated with the detected frequencies of delay. These sequential tasks called the “two-stage approach” were performed using a mathematical frequency analysis and statistical analysis techniques. The results of the frequency analysis showed that arrival delay displayed daily, weekly and seasonal patterns of variation. The results of the statistical analysis showed that time of day, day of week, season, flight distance, precipitation at MCO and scheduled time intervals between successive flights were significantly correlated with arrival delay.  相似文献

The influence of various kinds of flight operations on pilot fatigue remains a chronic problem which has a bearing on flight safety. In this study we sampled flight crews from six airlines in Taiwan, asking them to report on their perceptions of both physical and mental fatigue, before and after flight duty. The data were then analyzed with paired t-test and ANOVA. Our research results confirm findings obtained in other studies, namely, that perceived fatigue levels increase after flight duty, with that of oceanic crews being greater than that of crews serving either regional or short-haul operations. A majority of the pilots surveyed reported feeling fatigued or even nodding-off during long-distance flights, and consequently were in favor of a program of scheduled cockpit napping. While these findings are preliminary, they offer valuable information to aviation regulators and airlines regarding the assigning of consecutively scheduled flights to the same aircrews.  相似文献

This study sets forth a method to calculate the passenger benefits of an international airport project and assesses the passenger benefits brought about by two international airport projects.An international airport project mainly increases the number of flights and the possibility of determining convenient timetables. It does not significantly decrease the flight time of international travel. Thus, the user benefits brought about by an international airport project cannot be expressed by the conventional concept of ‘traveling time’, which is the term generally used.In this study, the ‘Expected Value of Traveling Time’ and ‘Expected Value of Generalized Cost’ are presented as indexes to evaluate improvements in convenience brought about by international airport projects. The passenger benefits of two airport projects in Japan are measured by consumer surplus calculated from the demand function using these indexes.These indexes are accurately calculated taking into consideration factors such as scheduling connections between domestic and international transport, and so enable a grasp not only of reductions in flight time, but also of passenger benefits resulting from international airport projects, such as increases in the number of flights and reductions in the time required to make transfers during domestic travel.  相似文献

This paper examines the key factors that determine business traveler loyalty toward full-service airlines in China. Based on literature review and panel interview, ten airline attributes under three categories were derived: (a) operational factors: safety, punctuality, and aircraft; (b) competitive factors: frequency of flights, schedule, frequent flyer program, ticket price, and reputation; and (c) attractive factors: in flight food & drinks and in flight staff service. We surveyed 2000 Chinese business travelers on domestic flights, obtaining 462 usable questionnaires. Hierarchical regression analysis reveals that reputation, in-flight service, frequent flyer program, and aircraft have the greatest influence in driving airline loyalty.  相似文献

Automobiles and roads are as much of a way of experiencing national parks as they are a means of conveyance. This study examines experiential aspects of transportation on Acadia National Park’s primary scenic road – Ocean Drive. Interviews with vehicle-based road users were conducted to identify indicators to measure and manage experiential quality on Ocean Drive. Also, a survey was conducted to make comparisons with important variables identified on “transportation-only” urban roads. Results suggest that (1) Ocean Drive is important to park visitors’ experience; (2) experiential indicators for Ocean Drive include vehicle crowding, scenery, and travel freedom/convenience; and (3) experiential aspects of transportation on scenic roads in parks may differ substantially from urban roads. Study findings suggest a need to deliberately and thoughtfully plan and manage for quality recreational experiences on roads in national parks and related areas.  相似文献

Urban Road Pricing has been proposed many times as a powerful instrument to fight congestion in urban traffic, but has systematically faced a hostile political envirionment, due to lack of confidence on its promised (traffic) results and fear of its political consequences. Lack of action in this front is contributing to stable or even growing congestion problems in most large cities.This paper tries to address the problem with a fresh look at the objectives of road pricing and at the reasons for that political hostility. For managing and developing the urban mobility system, efficiency and equity are normally taken as the basic economic objectives. Sustainability objectives may be integrated in the efficiency objective if we are able to represent adequately the costs of the resources consumed in the process. Political hostility is normally based on having to pay for what was freely available, and on the risk of exclusion for those with little revenue available for the extra cost of driving into the city.Pursuit of efficency leads to suggestion of marginal social cost pricing but this is hard to explain to the public and application of this principle is fraught with pitfalls since some components of that cost get smaller as traffic grows (noise related costs for example). Pricing is still a good option but the objective has to be something easier to understand and to serve as a target for mobility managers. That “new” objective is quality of the mobility system, with a meaning similar to that of “level of service” in traffic engineering, and prices should be managed to across space, time and transport modes in such a way that provision of service is made with good quality in all components.Pursuit of equity leads to some form of rationing, which has often been associated with high transaction costs and abuse by the administrators. But the use of electronic road pricing should allow easy ways to address the rationing process without such high costs. The basic proposition is that all local taxpayers receive as a direct restitution of their tax contribution a certain amount of “mobility rights”, which can be used both for private car driving in the tolled areas and for riding public transport.These principles are easily applicable with a variety of technical solutions for road pricing, from the simplest cordon pricing to the more sophisticated “pay-as-you-go” schemes. The paper addresses this question of implementation and argues for increasingly sophisticated schemes, as people get accustomed to the principles and finer targeting of demand segments may be needed.  相似文献

Uncertainties inherent in the airport traffic may lead to the unavailability of gates for accommodating scheduled flights. Incorporating random disruptions is crucial in constructing effective flight-gate assignments. We consider the gate assignment problem under uncertainty in flight arrival and departure times and develop stochastic programming models incorporating robustness measures based on the number of conflicting flights, idle and buffer times. The proposed models are formulated as large-scale mixed-integer programming problems and tabu search algorithms are implemented to obtain assignments of reasonable quality. We conduct a computational study to analyze the proposed alternate models and show the effectiveness of the solution methods.  相似文献

This paper reports on a study which seeks to improve our understanding of how people choose between different kinds of flight at competing airports, and how their choices are affected by access conditions. In particular, using stated choice data collected in Scotland, it investigates whether improving surface access to regional airports that are in relatively close proximity to one another (Glasgow and Edinburgh) leads people to avoid taking indirect flights from their nearest airport in favour of direct flights from an alternative airport. In line with expectations, our estimation results from Cross-Nested Logit models show strong aversion to connecting flights, resulting in a willingness to either pay higher fares for direct flights or accept non-trivial increases in access time. For the latter, even without the potential new direct rail link between the two airports, current access times are such that a scenario where direct flights were only available at the non-home airport, a substantial share of passengers would choose to travel from the alternative airport.  相似文献

BackgroundFactors predicting passengers’ ability to fall asleep and levels of sleep anxiety, while traveling on a commercial flight, are investigated through a two-study mixed design.MethodsData collected from approximately 400 participants contributed to the development and validation of multiple regression equations and model fit analysis; and participants responded to related open-ended questions.ResultsRegression equations yielded between two to seven predictors and predicted between 6.7% and 27.7% of the variance, ps < .001. Model fit was strong in all cases. An inductive qualitative approach provided detailed insight into passengers’ concerns and barriers over sleeping on a commercial flight.DiscussionAs the field of commercial aviation continues growing, researching and understanding passengers' experiences and perceptions is crucial to the success of the industry as consumers ultimately drive the market. Passengers’ perceptions of sleep quality on commercial aircraft is a key factor influencing their traveling decision. Therefore, a better understanding of this phenomenon can provide crucial information to future passengers, airline companies, regulatory agencies, and manufacturers, potentially influencing the future success of the aviation industry.  相似文献

The outbound airport baggage handling system (BHS) consists of a set of unloading zones (chutes) which are assigned to outgoing flights. Airport baggage operations have inherent uncertainties such as flight delays and varying number of bags. In this paper, the chute assignment problem is modeled as a Stochastic Vector Assignment Problem (SVAP) and multiple extensions are presented to incorporate the various design needs of the airport. A real airport outbound BHS is presented. This case study also guided the optimization models’ design process. The performance of the optimization models is compared with the methods used in practice and literature.  相似文献

The paper investigates the interconnectivity of airfreight networks as temporal concentrations at airport. The connectivity of freight transshipments depends on both the quality of connections at hub airports and the quality of indirect flights compared to direct flights. To mitigate air traffic demand-capacity imbalances, large European airports implement strategic flight schedules, where flights are assigned arrival/departure slots several months prior to execution. We propose a generic assessment of such strategic schedules using predictions about arrival/departure flight delays and cancellations. We demonstrate our approach for strategic flight schedules in the period 2013–2018 at London Heathrow Airport. Together with the development of dedicated strategic flight schedule optimization models, our proposed approach supports an integrated strategic flight schedule assessment, where schedules are evaluated with respect to flight delays and cancellations.  相似文献

The mileage redemption strategy is a procedure used by many business firms to reduce air travel costs, in which the frequent flyer miles of traveling employees accumulated during business trips are applied to their future business trips to obtain “free” air tickets. This paper presents a framework that investigates how the frequent flyer miles can be used in the most effective way to reduce air travel costs by those firms that are either using the mileage redemption strategy or considering the use of the strategy. The framework can be implemented quite easily by a spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel.  相似文献

We analyze runway delay externalities at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) using a deterministic queuing model. The model allows us to estimate the delay impact of each specific arriving flight on each other specific arriving flight. We find that, despite being only moderately congested (average queuing delay only 4 min per arriving flight), individual flights can generate as much as 3 aircraft-hours of external delay impact on other flights, with an average impact of 26 aircraft-minutes and 3400 seat-minutes. About 90 percent of this impact is external to the airline as well as the flight, a consequence of the lack of a dominant airline at LAX. We then compare the delay impact of each individual flight to its contribution to schedule convenience by determining the amount of “schedule delay” that would result if the flight were eliminated and its passengers forced to use the previous flight flown by the same airline from the same origin. We find that a number of commuter flights serving high density, short-haul segments generate much more queuing delay than they save in schedule delay, with the ratio exceeding 10 in several cases. We argue that social welfare would increase if such flights were eliminated, upsizing others as necessary to accommodate the displaced loads.  相似文献

This paper presents results from the SESAR ER3 Domino project. Three mechanisms are assessed at the ECAC-wide level: 4D trajectory adjustments (a combination of actively waiting for connecting passengers and dynamic cost indexing), flight prioritisation (enabling ATFM slot swapping at arrival regulations), and flight arrival coordination (where flights are sequenced in extended arrival managers based on an advanced cost-driven optimisation). Classical and new metrics, designed to capture network effects, are used to analyse the results of a micro-level agent-based model. A scenario with congestion at three hubs is used to assess the 4D trajectory adjustment and the flight prioritisation mechanisms. Two different scopes for the extended arrival manager are modelled to analyse the impact of the flight arrival coordination mechanism. Results show that the 4D trajectory adjustments mechanism succeeds in reducing costs and delays for connecting passengers. A trade-off between the interests of the airlines in reducing costs and those of non-connecting passengers emerges, although passengers benefit overall from the mechanism. Flight prioritisation is found to have no significant effects at the network level, as it is applied to a small number of flights. Advanced flight arrival coordination, as implemented, increases delays and costs in the system. The arrival manager optimises the arrival sequence of all flights within its scope but does not consider flight uncertainties, thus leading to sub-optimal actions.  相似文献

The impact of aircraft movements on the local community surrounding an international airport was investigated using airport data on complaints, noise monitoring, aircraft flight paths and movements to assess annoyance due to noise level and time-of-day. As predicted, the louder the noise the more complaints were generated, with twice the complaints per movement at 110–114 PNdB compared with 74–79 PNdB.The hourly patterns in flight frequency and complaints were clearly distinct. Calculations of the complaints per aircraft movement for each hour of the day showed a striking 24 h pattern with night flights (23.00–06.00) causing on average nearly five times more complaints than the rest of the day (06.00–23.00). The time of the greatest propensity to complain about aircraft noise was between 01.00 and 02.00 and the lowest between 08.00 and 09.00.The circadian pattern in sensitivity to aircraft noise could be used to inform the development of airport operations and flight movements to minimize community disturbance.  相似文献

Flight delay can be divided into the root and propagated delays for identification and analysis of airports/routes that have a great influence on actual flight delay using flight operations raw data (tower logs) for South Korean domestic flights. In addition, the presented concept of “generated delay” classifies airports as affecting other airport delays or affected by other airport delays. The generated delay refers to the delay time at a particular airport/route, and this delay thereafter actually propagates to other airports/routes. In this study, the generated and propagated delays were displayed on a two-dimensional graph, and the airports/routes were grouped according to delay characteristics. Group A represented airports with high generated and propagated delays, and group B represented airports that are highly affected by delays of preceding airports/routes. Group C represents airports where newly formed delays affect other airport delays, but these airports mitigate delays from other airports. Airports in group D have relatively low delays and propagation. Thus, we targeted airports belonging to groups A and C because of their delay propagation impact on other routes/airports, which must be reduced by decreasing the root delay from targeted routes/airports. Among the airports, Jeju international airport (CJU) had the highest average delay time and propagated flight delay time with similar averaged generated delay times. Among the routes, departure flights from various airports to CJU had significant propagation effects on the subsequent flights. CJU and related routes have a very large impact on domestic flight delays because South Korean domestic airline routes are concentrated on CJU. However, there has been no quantitative analysis, and it is meaningful that the quantitative analysis results were presented in this study. In addition, we suggest that other airports such as GMP (Gimpo), CJJ (Cheongju), WJU (Wonju), and KUV (Gunsan) have a significant impact on domestic flight delays.  相似文献

This study examines training pilot survey data in order to determine how students’ years of education and the institutions that they attend affect their perceptions of the risk factors in aviation as assessed using the SHELL model (software, hardware, environment, and liveware). The results reveal that student pilots lack confidence with respect to their knowledge during flights; moreover, they fail to recognize the importance of maintaining relationships among supporting staff such as air traffic controllers, mechanics, and others involved in the flight process. The findings suggest that to meet an increased demand for pilots, newly approved training centers are needed, centers which will foster awareness of interaction between human factors and other aspect of aviation safety; to support this, there should be more standardization of curricula.  相似文献

In this paper, a binary integer program is formulated for the optimal reassignment of planes to gates in response to day-of flight delays. This program minimizes the total walking distance of those passengers either connecting or originating at an airport whose boarding passes for affected flights were issued prior to the reassignment of gates. A numerical illustration using operations of Continental Airlines at the George W. Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas demonstrates the speed and efficiency of this program in both a real world and real time setting.  相似文献
