In this paper analytical solutions for European option prices are derived for a class of rather general asset specific pricing kernels (ASPKs) and distributions of the underlying asset. Special cases include underlying assets that are lognormally or log-gamma distributed at expiration date T. These special cases are generalizations of the Black and Scholes (1973) option pricing formula and the Heston (1993) option pricing formula for non-constant elasticity of the ASPK. Analytical solutions for a normally distributed and a uniformly distributed underlying are also derived for the class of general ASPKs. The shape of the implied volatility is analyzed to provide further understanding of the relationship between the shape of the ASPK, the underlying subjective distribution and option prices. The properties of this class of ASPKs are also compared to approaches used in previous empirical studies. This paper examines the distortions in property markets resulting from government actions to alleviate externalities associated with vacant lots. Using an equilibrium based real option model, the analysis indicates that announcement of a program of forced development may actually delay market-based development. By incorporating externalities associated with vacant lots into the model, the analysis indicates that owners of neighboring developed property benefit suggesting such programs will be politically popular.  相似文献

Since the early days of option pricing theory,the assumption that the dividends on the underlying stock or index over the life of the contract are known has not been challenged. We examine the sensitivity of index option prices to the assumption of dividend uncertainty. We consider a number of issues related to the forecasting of dividends and build a dividend forecasting model that passes several rigorous tests for unbiasedness. We then generate option prices using contemporary market levels and interest rates. We find that prices generated with the actual dividends are unbiased with respect to those generated using the forecasted dividends. The magnitudes of the forecast errors, however, are sufficiently large to suggest a concern, but the percentage errors are consistently small, typically amounting to less than two percent of the option price. We conclude that the convenient assumption that the stream of future dividendsis known is probably innocuous. This research presents a method for estimating the parameters of the binomial option pricing model necessary to appropriately price calls on assets with asymmetric end-of-period return distributions. Parameters of the binomial model are shown to be a function of the mean, variance, and skewness of the underlying return distribution. It is also shown that failure to incorporate skewness results in the mispricing of the call.  相似文献

This paper investigates the impact of divergent consumer confidence on option prices. To model this, we assume that consumers disagree on the expected growth rate of aggregate consumption. With other conditions unchanged in the discrete-time Black–Scholes option-pricing model, we show that the representative consumer will have declining relative risk aversion instead of the assumed constant relative risk aversion. In this case all options will be underpriced by the Black–Scholes model under the assumption of bivariate lognormality. Rational Pricing of Internet Companies Revisited   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
In this article we expand and improve the Internet company valuation model of Schwartz and Moon (2000) in numerous ways. By using techniques from real options theory and modern capital budgeting, the earlier paper demonstrated that uncertainty about key variables plays a major role in the valuation of high growth Internet companies. Presently, we make the model more realistic by providing for stochastic costs and future financing, and also by including capital expenditures and depreciation in the analysis. Perhaps more importantly, we offer insights into the practical implementation the model. An important challenge to implementing the original model was estimating the various parameters of the model. Here, we improve the procedure by setting the speed of adjustment parameters equal to one another, by tying the implied half‐life of the revenue growth process to analyst forecasts, and by inferring the risk‐adjustment parameter from the observed beta of the company's stock price. We illustrate these extensions in a valuation of the company eBay.  相似文献

We present a new method for truncating binomial trees based on using a tolerance to control truncation errors and apply it to the Tian tree together with acceleration techniques of smoothing and Richardson extrapolation. For both the current (based on standard deviations) and the new (based on tolerance) truncation methods, we test different truncation criteria, levels and replacement values to obtain the best combination for each required level of accuracy. We also provide numerical results demonstrating that the new method can be 50% faster than previously presented methods when pricing American put options in the Black–Scholes model.  相似文献

This article presents the theory of option pricing with random volatilities in complete markets. As such, it makes two contributions. First, the newly developed martingale measure technique is used to synthesize results dating from Merton (1973) through Eisenberg, (1985, 1987). This synthesis illustrates how Merton's formula, the CEV formula, and the Black-Scholes formula are special cases of the random volatility model derived herein. The impossibility of obtaining a self-financing trading strategy to duplicate an option in incomplete markets is demonstrated. This omission is important because option pricing models are often used for risk management, which requires the construction of synthetic options.Second, we derive a new formula, which is easy to interpret and easy to program, for pricing options given a random volatility. This formula (for a European call option) is seen to be a weighted average of Black-Scholes values, and is consistent with recent empirical studies finding evidence of mean-reversion in volatilities.Helpful comments from an anonymous referee are greatly appreciated.  相似文献

This paper analyses the robustness of Least-Squares Monte Carlo, a technique proposed by Longstaff and Schwartz (2001) for pricing American options. This method is based on least-squares regressions in which the explanatory variables are certain polynomial functions. We analyze the impact of different basis functions on option prices. Numerical results for American put options show that this approach is quite robust to the choice of basis functions. For more complex derivatives, this choice can slightly affect option prices. This paper describes a new technique that can be used in financial mathematics for a wide range of situations where the calculation of complicated integrals is required. The numerical schemes proposed here are deterministic in nature but their proof relies on known results from probability theory regarding the weak convergence of probability measures. We adapt those results to unbounded payoffs under certain mild assumptions that are satisfied in finance. Because our approximation schemes avoid repeated simulations and provide computational savings, they can potentially be used when calculating simultaneously the price of several derivatives contingent on the same underlying. We show how to apply the new methods to calculate the price of spread options and American call options on a stock paying a known dividend. The method proves useful for calculations related to the log-Weibull model proposed recently for empirical asset pricing.  相似文献

Ritchken and Trevor (1999) proposed a lattice approach for pricing American options under discrete time-varying volatility GARCH frameworks. Even though the lattice approach worked well for the pricing of the GARCH options, it was inappropriate when the option price was computed on the lattice using standard backward recursive procedures, even if the concepts of Cakici and Topyan (2000) were incorporated. This paper shows how to correct the deficiency and that with our adjustment, the lattice method performs properly for option pricing under the GARCH process. Recently Kifer (2000) introduced the concept of an Israeli (or Game) option. That is a general American-type option with the added possibility that the writer may terminate the contract early inducing a payment exceeding the holders claim had they exercised at that moment. Kifer shows that pricing and hedging of these options reduces to evaluating a saddle point problem associated with Dynkin games. A detailed analysis of the Least Squares Monte-Carlo (LSM) approach to American option valuation suggested in Longstaff and Schwartz (2001) is performed. We compare the specification of the cross-sectional regressions with Laguerre polynomials used in Longstaff and Schwartz (2001) with alternative specifications and show that some of these have numerically better properties. Furthermore, each of these specifications leads to a trade-off between the time used to calculate a price and the precision of that price. Comparing the method-specific trade-offs reveals that a modified specification using ordinary monomials is preferred over the specification based on Laguerre polynomials. Next, we generalize the pricing problem by considering options on multiple assets and we show that the LSM method can be implemented easily for dimensions as high as ten or more. Furthermore, we show that the LSM method is computationally more efficient than existing numerical methods. In particular, when the number of assets is high, say five, Finite Difference methods are infeasible, and we show that our modified LSM method is superior to the Binomial Model.  相似文献

Models with two or more risk sources have been widely applied in option pricing in order to capture volatility smiles and skews. However, the computational cost of implementing these models can be large—especially for American-style options. This paper illustrates how numerical techniques called ‘pseudospectral’ methods can be used to solve the partial differential and partial integro-differential equations that apply to these multifactor models. The method offers significant advantages over finite-difference and Monte Carlo simulation schemes in terms of accuracy and computational cost.  相似文献

In this paper, we suggest several improvements to the numerical implementation of the quantization method for stochastic control problems in order to obtain fast and accurate premium estimations. This technique is applied to derivative pricing in energy markets. Several ways of modeling energy derivatives are described and numerical examples including parallel execution on multi-processor devices are presented to illustrate the accuracy of these methods and their execution times.  相似文献

We introduce explicitly the effort as a choice variable in a continuous time utility maximisation framework of an executive who is partly compensated with stock options. We solve the model in the case where the executive is not allowed to trade in the company’s stock but is able to achieve a partial insurance through trading in a correlated market portfolio. We define the executive’s value of the options through a certainty equivalence approach both in the case of European call options and non-standard capped stock options and study the behaviour of the reservation price as relevant parameters change.JEL Classification: G13, G30, G32, J33, M12  相似文献

This paper investigates option prices in an incomplete stochastic volatility model with correlation. In a general setting, we prove an ordering result which says that prices for European options with convex payoffs are decreasing in the market price of volatility risk.As an example, and as our main motivation, we investigate option pricing under the class of q-optimal pricing measures. The q-optimal pricing measure is related to the marginal utility indifference price of an agent with constant relative risk aversion. Using the ordering result, we prove comparison theorems between option prices under the minimal martingale, minimal entropy and variance-optimal pricing measures. If the Sharpe ratio is deterministic, the comparison collapses to the well known result that option prices computed under these three pricing measures are the same.As a concrete example, we specialize to a variant of the Hull-White or Heston model for which the Sharpe ratio is increasing in volatility. For this example we are able to deduce option prices are decreasing in the parameter q. This paper studies the valuation of American options in the presence of external/non-hedgeable event risk. When the event occurs, the American option is terminated and a rebate is paid instead of the promised pay-off profile. Consequently, the presence of event risk influences the exercise strategy of the option holder. For the financial market in a diffusion setting, the probabilistic structure in terms of equivalent martingale measures is briefly analysed. Then, for a given equivalent martingale measure the optimal stopping problem of the American option is solved.
